Being an intern is always a scary experience. You’re the bottom of the totem pole, the one who gets the boring tasks or menial tasks that nobody else wants to do. Being an intern at Upper Deck has been totally the opposite of that and one of the best experiences I have had yet.

I have been immersed into sports ever since I can remember and working at Upper Deck was a sports fan’s dream! I had the opportunity to write about some of the most amazing athletes to ever exist in LeBron James, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and many more. It was so awesome to see this side of the “fans” world. I was able to write press releases and blog posts for new products and then I got to experience pitching the media. That was a very unique opportunity to work with a media outreach group and learn how to find just the right person to pitch a story to.

It is really cool to see some of the items I wrote and campaigns I helped with on the Upper Deck Marketing wall and all over the place online.

It’s safe to say that I was pretty comfortable writing and talking about legendary sports figures, but I was also challenged with writing about the entertainment side of Upper Deck which was a whole new world for me. I had no idea how much of an impact Upper Deck has on the entertainment industry with their various gaming products, trading card releases and memorabilia items like the Upper Deck Gallery which I spent a lot of time on.

Adding a solid working knowledge of Upper Deck’s entertainment lines was a challenge, but it opened my eyes to how diversified the company is with their product offerings.

Upper Deck does a lot at trade shows so to be a part of the strategy and planning for huge shows like Comic-Con and The National Sports Collectors Convention was incredible. I helped pen many of the announcements that the company went out with during those shows.

One of the highlights of my internship was receiving an Upper Deck employee exclusive signed Connor McDavid trading card. Upper Deck gives back to their employees with these cards which is really an innovative way to not only say thanks, but to bring those of us who work on these projects closer to the game and athletes we work with.

Scoring this unique collectible from hockey phenom Connor McDavid was a nice bonus for my internship this summer!

I’m leaving Upper Deck with so much more than I came with. I’m leaving with a better knowledge of the memorabilia world (a world I never knew was this important), feeling exponentially more confident in my writing skills, and having amazing memories I will carry with me as I go forward in my career!
