Introducing Incursion, Steadfast Loyalty format and more!
Hello Vs System® 2PCG® players!
The keen eyed among you may have noticed two $500 events in addition to the Main $5000 Vs System® 2PCG® World Championship on the Event list at Gen Con 2022. Today we would like to not only announce what those two events will be, but also break down all the Vs. System® 2PCG® activities for The Best Four Days in Gaming.
Let’s begin with the big one!
Friday 10 Am. This event will require decks constructed in the Life Goes On Featured Format as outlined Here. Your Main Character (and any that start outside the game) must have at least 6 printed health at each level. Each supporting character in your deck (and any that start outside the game) must have at least 2 printed health. You can only use cards from the beginning of “Volumes” (Volume 1, Issue 1 and onward). You may include any Basic Locations in your deck, even if they’re not from Volume 1 forward.
Top 8 through the Finals of this Event will be held untimed on Sunday at 10 AM local time.
Thursday / Saturday 2 Pm. These events will feature two new formats outlined below. They will be capped at 32 players each and offer both an onboarding for league players into tournament play as well as a refreshing new format.
Friday 6 Pm. There will be pre-designed Cubes to draft from in pods of 8 players. Each player will draft from randomized “packs” of cards to construct a limited deck and play in a 3 round single elimination tournament.
Beginning Thursday. One ticket gives you unlimited access to league play ALL WEEKEND long. Receive a FREE 200 card box and use those cards to build a deck and play games to earn league exclusive promo cards and playmat. More details to come on distribution of promos.
These are going on every hour of each day at Gen Con. They are Demos, learn to plays, and otherwise a free way to learn and teach this game we all love. Invite your friends to come down and learn to play!
*all money events will require the player to be 18+ to play in.
Now for those elusive side events… what exactly are they?
Well, the first one will be a new loyalty format known as:
Steadfast Loyalty
We wanted to offer an easy entry point into tournament play as one of the $500 Side events. One common theme kept rising to the surface: Loyalty. (Meaning decks that focus on a single team.)
A loyalty format is great for newer players since they tend to start off building single team decks. It also provides challenges to veteran players – what team will you choose and how will you optimize them?
The new Steadfast Loyalty format is like loyalty decks you have seen in the past, but this time around things are even more loyal:
Rules: All cards (excluding basic locations) in your deck and any associated Piles must have the same team symbol. Regular universe rules apply.
This means no neutral characters, equipment, plot twists, or locations (except basic locations.) Every card in your deck must share the same team symbol.
The Steadfast Loyalty side event will start Thursday at 2 Pm local time.
The other side event is a whole new format…. Kind of.
A New Kind of Format: Incursion
After six years the fabric of the Multiverse is starting to tear apart. As one reality bleeds into the next, it’s only a matter of time before they incur upon each other and whole universes get destroyed!
Incursion is a new ongoing Format – it will be available indefinitely just like Multiverse, and it will be used at Sanctioned events throughout each year beginning in August!
Incursion is going to start off exactly like Multiverse: All cards in the game are allowed. Standard Universe and Piles rules apply.
But here’s the big difference:
After each sanctioned Incursion event, some of the cards used at that tournament will be DESTROYED BY INCURSIONS: Those cards will no longer be allowed at future Incursion events.
It could be that a single main character gets destroyed or it could be a handful of cards. You’ll never know until after the event is over. Either way, it will make it so no two Incursion events are the same.
Which is the goal: Incursion is an ever evolving format.
While Multiverse will remain full of “anything goes” craziness, and each Featured Format will shine a temporary spotlight on specific teams, characters, or other aspects of the game, Incursion will change over time.
You probably have questions, so let’s get to it.
How does this work? What will determine which cards get destroyed?
We’re going to keep this behind the curtain for now, but as cards are destroyed you will no doubt sense a commonality in the destroyed cards.
We want the Incursion to change a lot over time, especially compared to Multiverse, so expect a lot of destruction
How do we keep track of which cards have been destroyed?
We will have a database which lists which cards were destroyed and when they were destroyed (date and event). Over time, this list will grow and will act as a record of sorts.
This list will be available to all at upperdeck.com/op and updated as frequently as we have Incursions.
So you’re just banning cards, right?
Yes, sort of.
“Destroyed” cards are effectively banned from future Incursion events. However, this in no way affects their legality in Multiverse or in Featured Formats. The Incursion Destroyed List is completely separate from all other formats.
Also, the philosophy of banning is somewhat different here. We have banned (and replaced) cards in the past because of power level issues. In those cases we felt we had to make a change for the health of the game.
With Incursion, banning cards is part of the fun. Even if there are no dominant strategies or problematic interactions in a given Incursion event, we will always destroy at least a few cards to make the next event different.
So join us August 4-7 in Indianapolis for everything Vs. System® 2PCG®!
