Doreen Green first appeared in Marvel Comics in Marvel Super-Heroes #8: Winter Special which hit shelves in December 1991, created by Will Murray and the legendary Steve Ditko. In the 26 years after that, Squirrel Girl has risen through the ranks to become the amazingly powerful and often underestimated superheroine that took down none other than the Mad Titan Thanos (Uatu was able to confirm that it was neither a clone or copy – but the actual Mad Titan).
When Doreen was young, she overheard a squirrel in her window and learned that she had the ability to speak with squirrels. Doreen later saved this squirrel, named Monkey Joe, who encouraged her to use her squirrel-like powers to help others. Squirrel Girl helped powerful superheroes, such as Iron Man and Hulk, and did her best to impress these seasoned superheroes, even earning a brief role as part of the Avengers.
When she moved to New York, she saved the Great Lakes Avengers in Central Park and joined their team and defeated Maelstrom with her squirrel army. A rejected member of the GLA named Leather Boy dressed up as Dr. Doom and killed Monkey Joe, devastating Doreen. Tippy Toe, the only squirrel who survived the encounter with Maelstrom, became her new squirrel companion.
