Heroes are often judged by the level of their villains. The more evil, devious, or sinister a villain can be, the better the heroes must be in order to defeat them. Throughout the X-Men’s history in Marvel Comics, they have faced off against some of the best villains ever created. In Legendary®: X-Men, the Villains and Masterminds will do everything they can to complete their Schemes and dominate the game.
Dominate represents Villains using telepathy, sorcery, or illusions to twist Heroes’ minds to evil. Some Villains, and even Masterminds, Dominate Hero cards from various places. Those Hero cards are placed under that enemy. That Enemy gains +1 Attack for each Hero card it’s Dominating.
When a player fights that enemy, they put one of those Dominated Heroes into each player’s discard pile. That attacking player chooses which player gets which Hero, including themselves. There might not be enough for every player to get one. Any excess Dominated Heroes are placed into the KO pile.
If a Villain escapes, any Heroes Dominated by that enemy are placed into the Escape Pile as well.
Some enemies prefer to hide behind innocent people to prevent Heroes from attacking. These Human Shields are captured by the Villain from the Bystander Stack and are placed face-down under that enemy.
During a player’s turn, and any time during that turn, they can spend Attack equal to the Villain’s Attack value to rescue one of its Human Shields at random and place it into their Victory Pile.
A Villain can have face up Bystanders and face-down Human Shields at the same time. Players will need to rescue the face-down Human Shields. Then they can fight the Villain, which will rescue the face-up Bystanders automatically.
Human Shields still count as Bystanders. Villains escaping with Human Shields still cause players to discard as normal.

So how does piercing energy work with human shield? Does it just ignore the human Shields and then you rescue them as bystanders?
Yes. Piercing Energy ignores any special conditions for fighting that enemy.
Thanks for the clarification
