Heat Wave: King James Signs for UDA
Posted by: | CommentsThis past Saturday, July 31, was a special day in Upper Deck’s history. It also marked a significant day for yours truly. You see, Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA) had secured an autograph-signing session with company spokesman LeBron James during his King’s Academy Basketball Camp, which was being held at nearby Rimac Arena on the campus of UC San Diego. The meaningful part for me was the fact that I got to interview LeBron, face-to-face, on camera. I was pumped.

THANKS FOR SITTING: Properly miking up King James was my first assignment of the day, after hanging the Upper Deck signage, that is.
As we’ve done exclusively since 2003, our mission was to nail down authentic, eye-witnessed signatures from “The King” for fast-approaching UDA product launches. But what made this particular meeting historic was the fact that it was LBJ’s first official “Miami Heat” signing for the company. He would autograph Heat-emblazoned basketballs and multiple photos showing him sporting his new No. 6 uniform.

STRANGEST SURFACE? LeBron chuckled when I asked him what's the strangest surface he's ever been asked to sign. "Body parts," he said. "Many body parts."
The signing went smoothly; the products he autographed should be available to purchase on the UD Online store toward the tail end of next week. But the exciting part of the equation for me came right at the start, when I was able to ask LeBron several questions about his new team; new jersey number; whether or not he likes signing for the fans; and even a question or two about his personal collection. He was cooperative, informative and even shared a few sound bites that none of us had heard before. For instance, did you know his most prized autograph is a signed TIME magazine cover by the reigning Commander-in-Chief, Barack Obama? And exactly how many fans out there already knew that LBJ is a lefty when he signs his autograph?

EN FUEGO: According to LeBron, his plan is to turn the Miami Heat into perennial contenders every year. "It will mark a new beginning for me," he said.
I asked him what he’d like to say to his new fans in Miami; the most unusual surface he’s ever been asked to sign; and would he continue his pregame talcum powder routine beside the scorer’s table each night.
The process of landing the LeBron Q & A was relatively easy, thanks to the orchestration efforts of Upper Deck’s Athlete Relations team. Landing a capable videographer for the Saturday afternoon shoot was not hard either; I only had to mention that LeBron James would be on the other side of the lens. Since making his well-documented “Decision” back on July 8 regarding his departure from Cleveland and impending arrival in South Beach, LeBron has endured his fair share of criticism, especially from the hometown crowd. A native of Akron, Ohio, and former three-time Ohio State Basketball Player of the Year while attending St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, he understood the backlash that would occur once he made his announcement. In seven exciting seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron averaged 27.8 points per game and led the Cavs to the NBA Finals for the first time ever in 2007.
But this day, three weeks after his announcement, he was more eager to discuss his newfound plans about winning a championship in Miami alongside the likes of perennial All-Stars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh.
‘It’s gonna be exciting,” he said. “It will mark a new beginning for me. Most of all, it’s gonna be fun.”
As will the unveiling of his new uniform number for memorabilia collectors. A longtime admirer of Hall-of-Famer Julius Erving, who sported the same number during his days with the Philadelphia 76ers, LeBron mentioned that the number brings with it some good Mojo as well. It’s the number he wore during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games when Team USA brought home the gold medal, its first since 2000. LeBron scored 14 points, pulled down six rebounds and added three assists in “The Redeem Team’s” 118-107, gold-medal-winning game against Spain.

SLOW AND STEADY: LeBron autographed several Spalding basketballs during the UDA signing, which will be available next week at Upper Deck's online store.
“Right now, it’s all about starting over,” he said. “And that’s what the No. 6 will allow me to do in Miami.”
LeBron doesn’t turn 26 until December 30. He’s a 6’ 8” basketball phenom who’s about to embark on a whirlwind tour with more on-court talent surrounding him than he ever had in Cleveland. With apologies to an aging Shaquille O’Neal, that’s simply the way it is. The world is LeBron’s oyster; the NBA title remains his elusive pearl.
As for his responses to some of those other questions I posed? I guess you’ll just have to wait for the video to see how those came out.

En Fuego: LeBron James Heat Memorabilia
Posted by: | Comments
There are certain advantages to having exclusive relationships during the course of one’s career. And when it comes to securing authentic, unique basketball memorabilia from some of basketball’s greatest players ever (MJ, Bird, Magic, etc.), no company in the world has better connections than Upper Deck Authenticated (UDA). Since 2003, UDA has had two-time reigning league MVP LeBron James on its roster of exclusive superstars from the hard court and will soon be revealing “The King” in a whole new light.
The second “King James” made his well-publicized decision on July 8 regarding his new whereabouts starting next season, UDA’s hard-working crew was fast at work, procuring new Miami Heat-emblazoned merchandise showing LBJ sporting his new No. 6 Heat jersey in more ways than one.
Take a look at some of the soon-to-be unveiled keepsakes that UDA will be rolling out to the masses in about six weeks. Check back at the Upper Deck Online Store in a week or so for pricing and availability.

Nice Sig: A Miami Heat-emblazoned Spalding basketball with LeBron's signature from UDA will command attention from collectors everywhere.

Where’s LeBron Playing Next Season?
Posted by: | CommentsOn Saturday, May 22, a bunch of us hard-working souls at Upper Deck ventured out to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to orchestrate three very important components at this year’s NFL PLAYERS Rookie Premiere Photo Shoot. First, we had to photograph each of the top college draft picks sporting their collegiate jerseys for upcoming football products licensed by NFL PLAYERS and the Collegiate Licensing Company. Next, we had to collect thousands of hard-signed autographs from the 35 participating players to be used as insert cards in the Upper Deck sets. Lastly, we taped each of the players answering questions about their collegiate careers and then asked their opinions on where LeBron James – one of Upper Deck’s exclusive spokesmen who’s considered the most sought-after free agent in the world – might be playing basketball next season.
We had an opportunity to get up close with each of the top college draft picks and solicit their thoughts on everything from their most memorable moments on the football field to what their collegiate programs might be like now that they’re moving on to the professional ranks. But probably the most thought-provoking question we asked each of them was where LeBron James might wind up in uniform next season.
The players’ guesses ranged from James staying in Cleveland to win an eventual championship for his hometown team, to moving out west to play for either the Lakers or Clippers, to going to the New York Knicks to revive the Big Apple’s basketball landscape. Some of the players, like Florida’s Tim Tebow and Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen, didn’t venture a guess per se as to which team he might wind up playing for, but did wish James well on his upcoming decision when he becomes an unrestricted free-agent on July 1. If nothing else, the players provide plenty of food for thought for LeBron himself.

Come Down Off the Ledge Cleveland Fans
Posted by: | CommentsMany of you may have read some of the posts here from my main writing partner on the Upper Deck Blog, Terry Melia. And as you may be aware, he’s a die-hard fan of all teams that hail from Boston. I couldn’t let him do another story about the greatness of Boston and how the Celtics are playing such inspired basketball so I begged him to let me take today’s column, and I also challenged him to a bet.
It probably wasn’t the smartest bet, but hey, I believe in “The Chosen One.” If LeBron James comes back to lead the Cavs over the Celtics in the next two games, Terry will produce a column next week on the 23 reasons why LeBron is the greatest player in the league right now. In turn, if the Celtics do wind up winning the series, I’ll do a special entry next week on the 17 reasons (one for each Beantown banner) that explains why Boston is the best franchise in the NBA. As a Laker fan I have to say, losing this bet would really suck.
So for now, I want to confess to you all that I have a very guilty pleasure. I listen to at least an hour-and-a-half of sports talk radio a day. It’s not easy to admit, nor is it something I’m proud of, but it’s a part of my routine and I don’t see it stopping any time soon. And all I could think about as I listened intently yesterday and earlier today was, “ENOUGH!”
To the layperson, you would have thought Cleveland lost the series to Boston on Wednesday night and the talking heads on talk radio (whom I love) were already abuzz about where LeBron would be playing next season. I even heard someone say he’s going to San Antonio. Really? You think the Brett Favre retirement stories are tough? The “Where’s LeBron going to wind up?” story is going eclipse that easily. But here’s the thing: the season isn’t over for the Cavs, the fat lady hasn’t sung and LeBron is still a member of this team.
Yes, King James had an awful Game 5 and he probably didn’t provide the best post-game comments, but he is still the two-time reigning league MVP. He will put the team on his back and get it done in Boston tonight. And I’m not saying that just because I despise Boston. You can’t tell me you’d be surprised if he went off for 40-plus tonight to lead the Cavs to victory and a Game 7 clincher back in Cleveland. Yesterday and today, people have been talking about where he’ll be next year and the fact this season is over because he is playing with a broken elbow. Come on. Enough!
Come down off the ledge Cleveland fans. You’re still in this. You’ve got the best player in the league playing in a huge game. Embrace it. Enjoy it. And to help inspire you, I am going to share some excerpts from some of the greatest motion pictures of the last century. Let the words of these cinematic legends pour over you and give you the confidence you need to take this series home where LeBron can do what he does best: win!

Upper Deck Retailer of the Month: All-Pro Sportscards
Posted by: | CommentsEach month Upper Deck spotlights one of its hobby retailing partners and outlines some of the reasons why you need to visit their store. If you haven’t been to a card store lately and are in the Ohio area, make sure to visit this month’s top Upper Deck retailer.
All-Pro Sportscards

Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44221

Email: allprosportcards@gmail.com
Monday – Friday 12:00PM-6:00PM, Saturday 12:00PM-5:00PM and closed Sunday
Early in the NBA Playoffs, when Cleveland’s Joakim Noah called out the city of Cleveland and said that it “sucks,” I took exception to that. I’ve been to Cleveland on several occasions and have enjoyed myself each time. I love the downtown area, taking in an Indians game during the summer, Tommy Boy, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Drew Carey, great dining and just 30 miles south in Cuyahoga Falls you have All-Pro Sportscards.
Rich Rinella collected cards for most of his life and it just so happened that when he lost his job after 15 years, a friend he knew was looking to sell their hobby store. After discussing options with his wife, they decided to take over the business and All-Pro Sportscards was given new life. Rich had set up at shows previously so he was familiar with the business and able to serve as a knowledgeable advisor to his customers.
His customer base took notice of his passion for the business and his efforts to meet and exceed their expectations. In a little more than seven years since Rich took over, he’s already moved to a bigger location and sales are stronger than ever. Not only does he take very good care of his customers, but he also loves to run in-store promotions to give something back to his loyal customers. He’s had JSA Authentication days, rip nights, in-store drawings, box battles, trade nights and a HUGE annual Christmas party. Upper Deck has participated in some of these events by providing items to help out and use as giveaways. And, All-Pro Sportscards is a kid-friendly destination.
The other great thing about All-Pro Sportscards is they are just a hop, skip and a jump from Akron, the hometown of Upper Deck exclusive basketball spokesman and reigning NBA MVP LeBron James. All-Pro Sportscards is the home to the largest selection of LeBron’s autograph cards and Upper Deck Authenticated memorabilia in all of northeastern Ohio. Rich is a big fan of LeBron’s and does a lot to make sure he is fully stocked on Upper Deck items from “King James” for his customers. In fact, in almost every conversation or e-mail exchange I have with him, Rich always sneaks in, “So when are you guys going to have LeBron do an appearance at my store.” He’s hit me up with it so many times, he’s almost got me convinced.
Besides LeBron, All-Pro Sportscards boasts a huge inventory of thousands of jersey and autograph cards from all sports as well as all the latest packs, boxes and cases. They have new and vintage inventory in stock. And maybe, just maybe, LeBron himself may be stopping by sometime in the future. You just never know.
