If you watched the final round of the Masters on Sunday, you couldn’t help but root for eventual winner Phil Mickelson at the same time you were probably hoping Tiger Woods would catch him. These two great golfers staged incredible final rounds at Augusta, but Phil’s five-stroke lead over Woods in the end was simply too much to overcome. The latter had run out of holes and chances by the time he was walking up to the 18th green. And for us at Upper Deck, it was another chance to root for the guy who has signed autographs exclusively for us since 2001.

To watch Tiger’s return to Augusta this past week was to watch a man seeking redemption out on the golf course, his preferred sanctuary. Like the Tiger of old, he came out with both guns blazing on Thursday, posting his best-ever first-round score: 68. Despite all the peripheral noise that has enveloped his life since the infamous car crash back on November 27, Woods appeared focused, determined and just four strokes off the lead. It was good to see him back in the thick of things; I couldn’t help but find myself trying to count how many bogeys Phil would need to register and birdies by Tiger to lock things up.

Despite his valiant play, staying in contention but never sitting atop the leader board, Tiger could never close the gap. When Sunday’s final round began, he once again found himself four strokes back, trying to catch the likes of Lee Westwood and Mickelson. He got as close as three strokes off the pace, but couldn’t get any closer. And when he bogeyed No. 14 – putting himself back to -7 – his quest for a 15th major and fifth green jacket had pretty much ended.

By contrast, Mickelson, who himself had endured a tumultuous year with both this wife and mother contracting breast cancer and battling just to stay alive, was hitting the shots of his life from the most precarious lies and found himself at -15 as he approached the 18th tee. A miraculous second shot from 207 yards out on 13, a lie that had his ball resting on straw behind a pair of trees, sealed the deal for Lefty. He split the trees and laid it up three feet from the hole. He two-putted, but the MoJo was working. Mickelson would not be denied this day. His third green jacket was just five holes away.

Speaking of five, that’s how many strokes Woods finished behind Mickelson. Not bad for a guy who hadn’t played competitively for 144 days, not since winning the 2009 Australian Masters on November 15. But not enough to put him back atop the golf world just yet.

We’re still waiting for No. 15 to happen, and when it does, watch out. We’ll continue to root for El Tigre. Even with the obstacles, he will win again and when he eventually surpasses Jack Nicklaus’s all-time majors’ mark of 18, the golf world will once again be re-energized. Despite what you think of the man, the competitor named Tiger Woods is good for golf. He brings his “A” game every time out and battles tooth and nail. And in the end, that’s really the reason we watch. Because guys like Tiger and Phil can make magic happen with a golf club.

Here’s a good look at the tools of the trade we have here at Upper Deck:

76373_TIGER_SHIRT_01

The shirt you see here is what Tiger wore in his last round of competitive golf at the Australian Masters, making it a very significant item. Oh, and he’ll be signing it for us in about two weeks.

Tiger-Woods-001

What’s even more important is that Tiger will be making his return to competitive play a little more than a week from now. Upper Deck has been affiliated with Tiger for almost a decade now, and we’re very excited to see him back in action.

Oh, and about the items above? The polo and glove are available now through Upper Deck Customer Service at 1-800-551-8220. The other items will be available on our online store soon. And the ball? It was hit by Tiger himself at a range, and will be available in one of these:

You’ve seen us show off this new curve display for hockey before, but this is the first time we’ve shown it on the blog for golf. A great item for any Tiger fan, for sure. It comes with an autograph, and this one will be limited to only 50. And hey, check out the shirt he’s wearing in the photo! Stay tuned, this item will be released the week of the Masters.

Tiger’s Return to Augusta

Posted by: Terry Melia | Comments (1)

News flash: Golfing great Tiger Woods is returning to competitive play very soon. The 2010 Masters Tournament in Augusta next month (April 8-11) will be the venue of choice. It makes perfect sense for Tiger to make his much-anticipated return at the celebrated Masters. While it will undoubtedly be a media circus, it’s also the site of his very first major win (1997) and has been a rewarding course for Woods as he’s emerged victorious at the tournament four times overall.

This is all good news for Upper Deck as we’ve had Tiger under exclusive contract for signed memorabilia since 2001. We’ve been able to chronicle his many victories out on the links and watch his march to greatness at every course from Augusta to St. Andrews. Our assortment of Tiger-signed memorabilia shows his fist pump celebration at the ’97 Masters to his memorable playoff round victory over Rocco Mediate at the 2008 U.S. Open. And remember, he won the latter tournament at Torrey Pines with torn ligaments in his left knee!

Tiger’s return to the links is a good thing for the sport and for the collectibles industry. Why just this morning, upon news of Woods’ return, eBay was awash with postings reading: “Need Masters Tickets.”  One solicitor even stated he was willing to pay $9,999.99 for tickets to all seven days of the tournament. Just being able to catch a glimpse of Tiger back in his element is enough for some fanatics to forego the family’s planned vacation to Yosemite and head to Georgia instead.

The sports collectibles industry is built around great athletes performing great things out on their chosen field of play. For Tiger the artist, using his golf clubs to drive, chip and putt represent his style of paint brushes rolling across canvases called Shinnecock Hills, Pebble Beach and Whistling Straits. The golf world has been without Tiger’s fire out on the links for the past four months and has missed it considerably. Because in every tournament he plays, TV ratings go higher, galleries get bigger, and the audience of collectors who seek out Tiger keepsakes and mementoes grows right along with it.

We look forward to chronicling Tiger’s continued march to greatness as he goes after major victory No. 15 next month. With Jack Nicklaus’s all-time mark of 18 majors still within striking distance, the anticipation, excitement and cheers surrounding Tiger’s pursuit just got a lot louder today.

The popular phrase “Ask, and you shall receive”, holds new meaning to popular pro golfer, Bubba Watson.  About a week ago, we received a tweet from Bubba to our @UpperDeckSports twitter account, saying “I wish I had my own trading card!!”   A few hours later, he proceeded to rally support from his followers and fans by tweeting “Bubba needs his own golf cards! Please RT!!”  Hours later, our account was flooded with supporters of Bubba as well as our collectors that wanted to see his plea come to fruition.

Here are a few tweets we received in response to Bubba’s request for us to make him his own golf trading card:

@UpperDeckSports The only way @bubbawatson should get his own card is if I get one so that I can have him sign it, then I say GO FOR IT!

@upperdecksports Of course! Are u kidding? @bubbawatson totally deserves his own card! Or CARDS. I would love to have one signed by him. :)

@bubbawatson. Having a card is cool, @UpperDeckSports but donating the proceeds of the “Bubba” card to charity is even cooler! –

@UpperDeckSports Please give Bubba his card and shut him up.

@upperdecksports heck yes! The epitome of sportsmanship and good attitude in a high dollar sport – I’d buy ‘em!

Bubba

Since these tweets have started to pour in, we have worked with our Creative department to start drumming up some ideas.  According to Bubba, “I want my trading card to be something that hasn’t been done before!”. Since our preliminary conversations with the golfer were all within 140 characters, there is still a lot of planning to do.  Stay tuned for more information and for sneak peeks into the card design and distribution of Bubba Watson’s very own trading card!  Oh, and rumor has it that he may autograph some cards and give them away to twitter followers of @UpperDeckSports and @bubbawatson.  What are you waiting for?

Right now, Tiger Woods is on the warpath after a debilitating injury that could have put many athletes out for good. After spending close to a year on the shelf with a surgically repaired knee, he is coming back with the roar we have become accustomed to seeing. Because Woods has already won a slew of Majors (not to mention more tournaments than you can shake a nine iron at), he is the person that tops my list of autographs you MUST get in the next year.

tigersig

As we saw this past week at Hazeltine Country Club in Minnesota, Tiger is a freak of nature, driving the ball farther than I have ever seen. I have actually had the chance to play the course myself, and though I am around a 10 handicap, I haven’t ever seen anyone play the course the way he did. He is truly the beast of beasts, quite possibly the most talented athlete in the world without challenge. For those of you who play golf, it’s clear what I am talking about when it comes to the unmatched difficulty of the game.

As many will attest, golf is one sport that can take a lifetime to become good, even at a casual level. To give you an idea, I have played golf since I was five, and I still cannot hit a ball over 300 yards. This is a feat that Tiger can accomplish without removing the head covers from his woods. Even if I did manage the farthest shot of my career, it definitely wouldn’t go in the right direction. For a professional, this type of thing is expected, and Tiger does it with class.

I used to know a local pro who was lucky enough to play in a tournament round with Tiger; he said it was like watching perfection with every swing. Every. Last. Swing. He said that Tiger did not make one mistake the whole time he was out there, something that most golfers will say is close to impossible. Of course, I’m not even talking about shanking it into the water, missing a bunker shot, or failing to reach a green in regulation. I am talking about hitting the right spot on every fairway with your drives, landing each approach shot within mere feet, and putting on a less than two putts per hole average. The guy will be the best ever when it is said and done, possibly among the best players of any sport in history.

Luckily for us, we have many opportunities to own a piece of Tiger’s glory, something that is usually very hard with the titans of each respective sport. Even though it may cost above 300 dollars to purchase a frame worthy piece, it will be worth every single cent in the coming years. Tiger has done more for golf than any single person has done for a single sport, and that will only become more relevant as he moves forward.

tigerSP
If you have the money to purchase one of his SP Authentic golf cards, I would do so as soon as you possibly can. There is no way your investment will decrease in value, even if he were to retire tomorrow. Michael Jordan may have been the best and most visible athlete before, but he never meant as much to his sport as Tiger does to his. Jordan’s autographs are the most valuable every year, regardless of set, and Tiger will never be any different (as evidenced by his recent appearances in Ultimate Football and Champs Hockey). Also, as an Upper Deck exclusive spokesman, he should keep signing for many upcoming sets, something that will continue to be a great thing for collectors who don’t have his autograph.

The fact of the matter is, that there has never been another player to have the game changed to challenge their dominance. This fact alone gives people a perspective as to just how much Woods has meant to the game of golf. Since his first win, Tiger’s presence in golf has prompted new golf course designs, new huge distances from the tee, and new depth in every bunker. Someone like Babe Ruth was a player who could have been challenged by bigger parks, but that never happened the same way Tiger has faced constant change in every day play. The biggest example has definitely been the changes to Augusta; one of the most famous courses in the world, where course redesigns after Woods’ -19 performance in his first Masters win were sweeping to say the least. Entire holes were gutted to make it harder for him to rack up crazy scores, including the holes on the famous Amen Corner. Like a true champion, it did little to prevent his number of victories, but rather only grew the stroke counts in which he accomplished them.

With the Upper Deck Authenticated store offering some of the most breathtaking pieces ever signed by Tiger, its time to think about spending some money while prices are where they are. Even if you are just a casual fan, it is worth the money to add a conversation piece to your collection just to display it with pride. Even better is that every single Tiger Woods autograph has gone through the extensive Upper Deck certification process, which means that there is a 100% guarantee from the company that what you are buying is real. In today’s market, this is all but essential, especially when these autographs look as wonderful as they do.

tigershoes

You may see that people tout autograph rarity as the sole determining factor of value in this hobby, but I disagree. Personally, I say that when the market is ready for each player to reach the pinnacle of their accomplishments, it will be the prestige of the item the autograph is signed on. Thanks to some innovative approaches to signing, the Upper Deck cards and memorabilia will no doubt be the most valuable for Tiger. So, why miss out on your chance to buy in? You already know that he is the face of his sport. You already know he will pass Jack Nicklaus shortly to become the winningest golfer ever. You already know his value will never decrease. Therefore, buy what you can before the prices match his legacy, and get something that will always stand out from any other item.
