As Upper Deck’s Customer Care Manager, it is my goal to help educate our collectors and fans so they can have a better experience with our collectible products. I’ll routinely post updates about what we hear on the phones and through e-mails from customers in segments called Ask UD. I hope you find this information relevant and interesting. If you have questions yourself, please feel free to leave a comment and “Ask UD!”

Here are some of the questions we’ve received recently in Customer Care:

Ask Upper Deck: Chris Olds at Beckett indicated you were involved in a “war of words” with Panini about video trading cards. What’s up with that?

Nick Leslie: Innovation is something very important to us here at Upper Deck. We work very hard to lead the category in bringing the next big thing to market. We proved we can do that again by being the first company to bring a high-definition video trading card to market earlier this week when 2011 Upper Deck Football hit store shelves and EVOLUTION cards were being discovered. At the time, we felt it was necessary to share the differences between our card and their card. And for the good of the industry and the success of video cards, I’m glad Panini paid attention to me.

Upper Deck's EVOLUTION video trading cards have been creating some much needed buzz for the industry.

In the earlier blog that Chris Olds at Beckett commented on, I shared that their card was only a conceptualized mockup, where we had an actual line of video trading cards ready to go out. The folks at Panini confirmed this to be true by releasing an updated image of their card that looked completely different from the mockup they first shared.

My second point was that their mockup looked more like a video player and not a trading card. I’m glad they took my advice by changing it up to look more like a trading card. Had they released it as they had initially planned, it would not have gone over well. It is good to see they have looked at our first-to-market version and made some updates as well. Initially they shared they would have batteries in the card, now they have shared they are planning on adding a USB port just like Upper Deck EVOLUTION. I didn’t see a way to turn the device on or off like our video card has, but I’m sure they’ll figure that out as well by looking at EVOLUTION more.

My third point speculated on when they might launch it. It is good news that they will be able to get it out this season. I just wish they wouldn’t continue to call it the “first” video trading card as it just creates a perception that they are lying to the public since our card is live and already in the hands of collectors. We joke around the offices here that shortly Topps will be announcing they are coming out with the “first” video card. Panini should just call it the “first video basketball card” and that would be fine. Unless of course Upper Deck has an EVOLUTION card featuring Michael Jordan or LeBron James prior to their June launch. Hey, I told you we like to lead the category, right?

Tracy Hackler (left) of Panini and Chris Olds (right) of Beckett are good friends from their days working together at Beckett Media.

One of the last things I would like to say in terms of a “war of words” would be for Chris Olds who, as many people know, is friendly with several folks at Panini including their Sports Marketing Manager, Tracy Hackler. I believe Tracy actually hired Chris at Beckett Media and they worked together for a couple of years so it makes sense they would be friends. Chris alluded to the fact that Panini’s card may in fact be better because it was autographed. We feel strongly that the industry has relied on autographs and memorabilia cards for too long so by bringing innovative new cards to market you can have a situation where a different kind of trading card can be successful. Instead of putting another memorabilia or autograph card in a pack that will further water down those already in the market, we push to find new items to include like Entomology cards, Thoroughbred Hair Cuts cards, Shadowbox cards and now EVOLUTION cards. With EVOLUTION cards performing well selling between $50-$125, they are already proving that they don’t necessarily need to be autographed to be successful.

Those in the hobby still seem a little skeptical on the idea of a video card and that is fine. Although everyone we have showed the cards to has really liked them, we understand that collectors are all different and some are very traditional with how they feel about their cards. So while everyone may not be able to agree on whether video trading cards are a good idea, what you cannot disagree with is the fact they have people talking, especially outside the hobby. Since we made the announcement about EVOLUTION, we have been visited by different members of the media almost every day. These cards get people talking and they shine a light on our business giving us the opportunity to speak to new and lapsed collectors and to try to bring them back into the fold. The more people that know about what we are doing in the hobby, the better. EVOLUTION has brought excitement to the category and that is definitely a good thing.

Ask Upper Deck: I received a “TBD” redemption out of Exquisite football what is it?

Nick Leslie: “We intentionally did not mark the player’s names on these cards as we wanted to reveal them once the signatures came back in house. Having them listed at ‘TBD’ allows us some flexibility where if any athlete takes too long to sign, we can simply remove them from the line-up and collectors won’t be stuck waiting for them. These cards are NOT for members of the 2011 NFL rookie class. The players included in this set are in line with other players collectors are pulling. We will start releasing names in the coming weeks after they have completed signing and we will ship them out randomly to fans who have redeemed them at that time.”

Ask Upper Deck: I pulled a redemption card from a pack, what do I do next?

Nick Leslie: “Athletes have a lot on their plate so unfortunately they do not always get their signed cards back to us before a product packs out. When that happens, we use redemption cards where customers can register their card with us and when the athlete returns the card to us, we send it directly to our customers. We work diligently with athletes to get their signed items back in house as soon as possible.

“If you were lucky enough to pull a redemption card, Upper Deck offers two ways for you to claim it. Customer care reps are available to you Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM PST and our online service is always available to collectors. The online service is probably the best way to redeem your cards because it is always available to collectors and you can check the status on your cards through it to see when they are shipping and if there are any issues with them. It is easy to setup an account and you can also change your address in case you move.”

Ask Upper Deck: Have you conducted signings with any big names recently?

Nick Leslie: “Yes, some of the biggest names out there to be exact. We recently conducted a signing with Michael Jordan who signed some outstanding redemptions as well as some cards for new Upper Deck basketball sets.

These cards feature part of the floor that Michael played on with the Tar Heels. These cards can be found in 2011 SP Authentic Basketball.

This was a redemption that Michael signed that will be going to one lucky collector who redeemed it!

“We had a couple great hockey players sign for us as well including Sidney Crosby right before the playoffs and the ‘Great One’ himself; Wayne Gretzky.”

Sidney Crosby's autograph lends a lot of value to this SPx Shadowbox card.

Hockey fans would be elated to find a card like this in their mailbox!

Ask Upper Deck: I am planning on going to the 2011 Sports Card and Memorabilia Expo in Toronto in a couple weeks, will Upper Deck be there?

The Sports Cards & Collectibles Expo in Toronto is a great event for collectors to check out some amazing items.

Nick Leslie: “We absolutely will be there! We will be sharing more details about our plans for that event later on this week. Our popular Priority Signings cards will be available through wrapper redemptions at the Upper Deck booth. We will be showing of Upper Deck EVOLUTION video trading cards as well. Our plans will be similar to what we did in the Fall, check it out here. See you in Toronto!”

Upper Deck is working closer than ever before with its network of Authorized Distributors before running some fun promotions through them by spending more time with their customers. This morning, members of Upper Deck’s Product Development, Marketing and Customer Care teams trekked 75 miles north for a Meet the Manufacturer event at Anaheim-based GTS Distribution. GTS is one of four Authorized Distributors nationwide for Upper Deck.

Hobby shop owners from throughout southern California stopped by before they opened their respective shops for another day of sales to spend a little time with the Upper Deck staff and get a sneak peek at what UD is coming out with next. The first order of business was discussing 2011 Upper Deck Football which hit store shelves today. One of the big draws in this product is the chance to find one of the first-ever, high-definition video trading cards known as EVOLUTION. Hobby shop owners stood open-mouthed as they watched these cards come alive for the first time.

Upper Deck and GTS staff take some time to talk to shop owners about new products and programs

Next we discussed some of the exciting baseball releases we have planned for this summer like Goodwin Champions and SP Legendary Cuts. We brought actual paintings used in the set and as a fun twist, a complete set of the Entomology (bug) cards that were a huge hit when the product debuted in 2009.

From there, we moved on to a presentation from members of Upper Deck Authenticated who shared some of the exciting new items they have in the pipeline. Take a look!

For a better look at the new Curve™ Displays that Steve Sloan mentioned, click here. And to get a look at the Tegata piece he mentioned, just watch this!

Lastly, our Customer Care Manager, Nick Leslie, spent some time with visiting shop owners to address any customer concerns they may have. All the hobby shop owners in attendance were members of Upper Deck Certified Diamond Dealer program so they were definitely dedicated to helping out their customers and keeping them happy.

Upper Deck recommends you always try to purchase through a Certified Diamond Dealer first

Upper Deck and GTS staff show off blow-up cards from 2011 Upper Deck Football which releases today!

All in all it was great to get some time to share new products with our customers and get some crucial feedback on them. We look forward to doing it again soon. Thanks to everyone at GTS and to their customers for spending time with us today!

As many sports card fans are aware, Upper Deck is the exclusive home for collegiate licensed trading cards and with the NFL Draft right around the corner, football fans want trading cards of the top draft picks. Upper Deck brings pigskin fans exactly what they are looking for when 2011 Upper Deck Football hits store shelves tomorrow with rookie and autographed cards of all the top draft picks! We featured images of many of the rookies signing for the set previously right here on the Upper Deck Blog.

We shared some reasons as to why collectors should purchase through Certified Diamond Dealers last week, but here is just another reason. To help celebrate this giant release, UD partnered with Sports Images to run a variety of Upper Deck Tailgate Parties with shops this week where fans could receive some larger than life blow-up football cards. Just take a look at these huge cards featuring top rookies and legends that our Certified Diamond Dealers will be giving away later on this week.

UD produced five blow-ups of Doug Flutie, Barry Sanders, John Elway, Jim Kelly, Cam Newton, Blaine Gabbert, Jake Locker and Mark Ingram. Each shop will receive two blow-up cards.

Football fanatics are encouraged to reach out to these participating Certified Diamond Dealers to find out how they can get the chance to take home these enormous collectibles (NEW SHOPS ADDED IN RED):

As Upper Deck’s Customer Care Manager, it is my goal to help educate our collectors and fans so they can have a better experience with our collectible products. I’ll routinely post updates about what we hear on the phones and through e-mails from customers in segments called Ask UD. I hope you find this information relevant and interesting. If you have questions yourself, please feel free to leave a comment and “Ask UD!”

Here are some of the questions we’ve received recently in Customer Care:

Ask Upper Deck: Both Upper Deck and Panini have released information on video trading cards recently. What is the difference between your video card and their video card?

Nick Leslie: “Good question. Based on the information both companies have released there are three clear differences between both products that I would like to go through.

Upper Deck Product Development staff strongly believed that EVOLUTION cards must look like a trading card first, but have a video element to make them unique.

“Number one, they have a concept, we have a card. That is VERY important. We didn’t share anything about the Upper Deck EVOLUTION cards until we had the actual cards in-house to show off. The reason why is because these are not easy to make. What Panini has shared is a concept for what they think their video card will be along with a mock-up. They have not shared an actual card. We could mock-up a flying trading card, that doesn’t mean we have one ready to go. From concept to final product is a long distance. Upper Deck EVOLUTION cards are done and are now packing out in 2011 Upper Deck Football on April 12. Panini on the other hand is not even far enough along to share what product their video cards will appear in. Quite frankly we could be on the second or third generation of EVOLUTION cards by the time they get their first card to market.

“Number two, EVOLUTION is a trading card first, while their product looks like a video player. We have done some technology-based cards before and while they were popular and definitely had a niche fan base, they weren’t very popular with the hobby. The reason why is because they didn’t look like trading cards. Throughout our extensive development process, one thing we felt was paramount to the success of the project was that these look like trading cards first with a compelling design, player images and the video adds to the trading card. When I saw the mock-up of the Panini card, it looked to me like a video player, not a trading card. What do you see when the card isn’t playing for the Panini card? It would just be a blank black screen. That is not a very compelling collectible and certainly doesn’t make you think ‘trading card.’ We all know that trading card companies cannot compete with Sony and Panasonic, so what Upper Deck chose to do is focus on what we do best. We made a compelling new trading card utilizing existing booklet card features and incorporated video, not a video player we tried to pass off as a trading card.

Is this really a trading card? Or is it just video player that will be blank when it is not on?

“Number three is that they are launching with the NBA and we are launching with college football. This is a HUGE difference potentially for fans. Why? Both sports have rabid fan bases, but if their video trading card may not release until next season, you have to ask yourself, “Will there even be a NBA season next year?” Collector interest in Upper Deck CLC products seems to be at an all-time high with many of our 2010 cards outperforming NFL licensed releases. We believe we are starting this product in the right sport with a tech-savvy fan base looking to gobble items like this up.

Rabid college fans of schools like Cal are going to love seeing DeSean "Action" Jackson's amazing moves for his days with the Bears.

“More differences may become clear as they share more about what they intend to do or changes they plan on making to their card. Upper Deck’s EVOLUTION cards will already be out there in the market for collectors to enjoy and experience. We’ve had a lot of mainstream media by this week to see the cards and I saw them myself as well. I can say without a doubt that collectors are really going to enjoy the EVOLUTION!”

Ask Upper Deck: Is it better to call in my redemptions or redeem them online?

Nick Leslie: “Well first you may want to check with your local hobby shop to see if they can redeem the cards for you. Most shops frequently offer that service to their customers. They will let you know when they come back in or work directly with us if there are issues. Otherwise, the best option is definitely to redeem the card online by scratching off the code on the card and entering it here. By redeeming the cards online, you’ll be able to check their status and find out if the athlete has signed and approximately when the cards shipped. Redeeming the cards over the phone is a practice more for those who don’t have internet access.”

Ask Upper Deck: What is a NPN? I hear people talking about it, but I don’t know where it is on your site or how to get involved.

Nick Leslie: NPN stands for ‘No Purchase Necessary’ and it is a program we have been doing for a number of years now where fans can enter a drawing for an insert card from new Upper Deck products. We allocate a small amount of each product to offer up to fans through these NPN drawings. Entries are limited to one entry, per person, per household. To take part, just click here and only winners will be contacted through mail with the insert card they won.”

2010 SP Authentic Football is one of the NPN products available right now for fans to potentially win some FREE inserts of.

Ask Upper Deck: Where can I find the most up to date release dates for new Upper Deck products?

Nick Leslie: “We are in the process of revamping our website and we are hoping to launch the updated version in the coming weeks. In the meantime, we can quickly and easily update release dates on the Upper Deck Facebook page located here.”

One question people frequently ask me in this industry is, “What do you think trading cards are going to look like ten years from now?” It’s fun to speculate, but the truth is you just never know. If you would have asked me in 2001 if I thought there would be video trading cards by 2011, I would have probably laughed at you. But here we are today, where I am looking at the first-ever collection of video trading cards at our Upper Deck headquarters.

Here it is, the first-ever video trading card. These are the actual cards packing out right now in 2011 Upper Deck Football.

When I saw the final Upper Deck “EVOLUTION” cards this week I was blown away for a few reasons. First, it wasn’t like we just put some cardboard around a dvd player, this is a trading card first. Once you open up the booklet part of it, the card comes to life and I found myself lost in this new technology. While I loved the PowerDeck concept we came out with before, that was basically a compact disc; “EVOLUTION” is an actual trading card.

Next, I found it cool how the cards have a little port to recharge. The battery life on these is actually pretty long, but it is good to know there is a way to juice it up when it gets low. I also loved how the booklet portion closes. There are actually small magnets embedded in the cover to keep it closed so it doesn’t just lay hanging open.

Upper Deck is bringing football cards to life like never before with EVOLUTION!

I just loved watching the highlights of players like Tony Romo, Adrian Peterson, DeSean Jackson and Patrick Willis. We were able to get some really great footage and the quality is amazing.

But mostly it reminded me a lot of when I first started working for Upper Deck in 1997 when I saw the first game-used trading card. I marveled at those, just in awe of how groundbreaking they were. In that same innovative spirit, Upper Deck has done it again.

I am really excited for fans to see what I’m talking about as these start to get discovered on April 12 when 2011 Upper Deck Football hits shelves. It really is a card you have to see to believe and at Upper Deck, we are thrilled to be the company to bring you the first video trading card.
