Hitting a Collecting Grand Slam with Derek Jeter

The five winners from Upper Deck’s Yankee Stadium Legacy Collection contest pose with Yankees Team Captain Derek Jeter alongside the YSL card collection that was on display at the NYY Steak restaurant in New York on June 16. From left: Kent Hayes, Tommy Baxter, Josh Adams, Leo Wiznitzer, Jeter and Chuck Sauter.
They traveled to New York City from as far away as Panama, Sacramento, Little Rock, Pensacola and Largo, Florida. And thanks to Upper Deck, their tickets were covered, as were their hotel accommodations and meals. “They” were the five Yankee Stadium Legacy Collection contest winners that Upper Deck promised would meet none other than New York Yankees Team Captain Derek Jeter if they were able to put together the company’s mammoth YSL baseball card insert set from 2008 chronicling every Yankees home game ever played at the old Yankee Stadium starting in 1923.
Each of the fantastic five not only pieced together the enormous, 6,661-card collection of inserts, but they did it before the April 30, 2009, deadline closed. Leo Wiznitzer, in fact, made things interesting by sending in his set on the final day of eligibility. “I wasn’t even aware that there was a grand prize involved,” he explained, “not until about ten days before the contest ended.”
But when he heard about the chance to not only meet Jeter, but to also have lunch with the 11th Yankee Team Captain in history, it was too cool to pass up. “Mariano Rivera’s actually my favorite Yankee player, but Jeter is such a terrific guy,” said Wiznitzer, who was simply putting the set together for several months because he wanted to.

YES Network producer Christa Robinson interviews YSL contest winner Leo Wiznitzer.
On Tuesday, June 16, Wiznitzer, who lives in Panama, along with Tommy Baxter (Little Rock); Chuck Sauter (Pensacola); Kent Hayes (Sacramento); and Josh Adams (Largo), all got their chance to live out a baseball dream by having lunch with Jeter at the NYY Steak restaurant, which is located inside the new Yankee Stadium; attend batting practice on the field that afternoon; and then watch the Yankees battle the Washington Nationals that evening from field-box seats up the third-base line.
“This was even better than I expected,” said Hayes, who brought along his eight-year-old son, Everett. “Jeter was super.”
Starting at 1 p.m., with the YES (Yankees Entertainment & Sports) Network filming for a small feature they plan to run next week and Yankees Magazine on hand, I introduced each of the five winners to Jeter, who was gracious and seemed excited to meet his guests as well as get a glimpse of the Yankee Stadium Legacy Collection set we had on display at NYY Steak. “Can I get this, with the cards?” he asked me smiling, after I told him it was a 1-of-1 display case. After some personal grip-and-grin pictures were taken, everybody sat down to lunch and a casual question-and-answer session ensued.

“Who was your sports idol growing up?” “What’s your favorite sports movie of all time?” “Do you have any pregame rituals you can share?” “Did you play other sports growing up?” “When did you sign your first autograph?”
Jeter was courteous and provided well-thought-out answers to each of the questions. As lunch orders were taken (Derek went with a chicken dish, veggies and a tall glass of water), he answered with responses like: “Dave Winfield was my idol growing up. My favorite sports movie is the original Major League. It’s such a funny movie. And I loved 61*. I don’t really have any pregame rituals or superstitions I do – unlike Wade Boggs and his need to always eat chicken before every game – but I always get to the ballpark early [2:30 p.m. for a 7:05 start], stretch and listen to some R&B music. I played every sport growing up, but I always liked baseball the best. And I signed my very first autograph while I was in high school, which I thought was kind of strange at the time.”

At 2:10 p.m., following a pair of short interviews with YES and Yankees Magazine, Jeter relocated his seat to make his virtual world debut at UpperDeckU.com, Upper Deck’s recently unveiled online world for kids. More than 300 kids from across the country signed up to ask the star shortstop various questions and he knocked out hundreds of answers with the help of keyboard aficionados Carrie Peterson, Upper Deck’s online marketing manager, and Christine Lee, the company’s events planner. He giggled, drank coffee and seemed amazed that the online avatars on the flat screen in front of him represented actual kids eager to chat.
At 3 p.m., Jeter said his good-byes to everyone, including the wait staff at NYY Steak, signed a few select items for the YSL contest winners, and then made his way toward the clubhouse by exiting through the kitchen door. The YSL winners, still buzzing about their time with Jeter, were then treated to a private tour of Yankee Stadium, which included a memorable visit to Monument Park behind the centerfield wall.

At 5 p.m., five of the guests were granted on-field access for batting practice. Sauter and Adams were part of the contingent, while Hayes sent his son, Everett; Wiznitzer let his 12-year-old nephew, David, attend; and Baxter watched his 11-year-old daughter, Madeleine, accompany the group down to the field. And almost like it was scripted, Jeter – on his way to the dugout after shagging flies – stopped by and signed more autographs for Upper Deck’s lucky attendees as well as for some other rabid fans nearby.

The game ended on a high note as the Yankees won, 5-3, and Mariano Rivera notched his 15th save of the season (497th of his career). And even though Jeter went 0-for-3 with a walk, and left the game with a nagging ankle injury in the seventh inning, the evening was a complete grand slam for Upper Deck’s five winners and their guests.
“We had a great time,” said Hayes. “I don’t think we could have asked for more.”

Derek Jeter’s Exclusive Online Meet and Greet in UpperDeckU
Posted by: | CommentsDerek Jeter doesn’t own a pet, because he’s scared of them. His hero growing up was Dave Winfield, and his favorite food is Chicken Parmesan. He eats peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before each game, and still gets butterflies before going up to bat. These are just a few of the answers to the many questions asked by kids around the country on Tuesday, June 16th when Jeter made an exclusive in-game appearance in the kids’ virtual world, UpperDeckU.

To prep for the event, we sold tickets at UpperDeckU, which kids could obtain with Gold Coins in the game. Kids from all over logged in on Tuesday between 2-3pm EST to meet and chat with Jeter online, asking him whatever they wanted. Questions ranged from “Do you hate the Red Sox?” to “What do I do so I’m not afraid of getting hit by the ball?” Derek’s responses were both candid and amusing, especially when asked if he owned any pets. His response shocked many of the kids, as he stated “I don’t own any pets, because they scare me.” Not your typical response, but nonetheless, the kids enjoyed his honesty and answers to all the questions they threw at him during the event.

We hosted the online appearance at a restaurant called NYY Steak inside the new Yankee Stadium. The venue was stunning, and we did this in conjunction with a Meet and Greet with Upper Deck winners who collected the complete Yankee Stadium Legacy Set (amounting to a grand total of 6,661 cards!) After Derek met with the winners, it was my turn to switch modes into the online appearance, where kids were anxiously waiting. I hosted the appearance as the Club Commissioner, Lisa Mayor, with my co-worker Christine Lee fielding Derek’s responses as his avatar, THE_DEREK_JETER. Derek was curious about all the kids’ players on the large screen in front of him, and asked if these kids were really logged on computers waiting to talk with him. Yup! Derek, these kids have been waiting for a long time to get to chat with you!

Once the event started, Derek’s and my avatar appeared in the game, and we were ready for whatever the kids threw our way. We moved to five different rooms in UpperDeckU throughout the event, talking to approximately 50-100 kids at a time. Derek was energetic and enthralled with the entire process and amazed that he was able to chat with all these kids at one time.
Overall, his virtual appearance in UpperDeckU was a success, and now we can all rest assured that he’ll continue to stick with baseball, and won’t see him become a veterinarian anytime soon!

Derek Jeter to Appear in Kids Virtual World, UpperDeckU!
Posted by: | CommentsAt Upper Deck, we’re happy to promote sports in general, and have found that many of our younger collectors still enjoy playing their favorite sports- even in this day and age. On the other side of the coin, they are growing up in an online world, and in turn, gravitating to the Internet to meet some of their needs where fandom is concerned. Of course they are! If you go to a Yankees game, it’s definitely a great experience, but the odds of being able to talk to Derek Jeter himself are rather slim. However, with the internet now a factor, we propose that you CAN and WILL be able to do so, all from the comfort of your own home.
Thanks to UpperDeckU, kids will be able to log into the new virtual world to meet and chat live with the Yankees Team Captain, Derek Jeter on June 16th. The event will take place at the new Yankee Stadium from 2-3 pm, where kids from all over the world can log into UpperDeckU and chat with him live online! For the first time ever, Jeter will log into the computer with myself as the facilitator (so excited!), and will be virtually interviewed by hundreds of excited kid fans, who are sure to throw a couple curveball questions at him.

For the past week, kids have been submitting various questions that they want to ask Jeter during the event, including “Do you hate the Red Sox?“, “Do you like hot dogs?”, and “What’s it like to have your own cologne brand?” If you’re wondering how kids can get a ticket to the exclusive appearance, only those users that have Insider Access will be eligible to buy a ticket. Kids can purchase their ticket from Richard McSport inside the Upper Deck Store for their chance to mingle with the one and only Derek Jeter! These tickets are limited, and are available on a first come, first serve basis. And anyone can participate on UpperDeckU, so if you’re a parent with a kid who would enjoy this experience, it’s a great opportunity for both of you!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with UpperDeckU, it is a virtual world for kids, where they can create a character and play games, chat with friends, trade digital cards, decorate their room, and wear MLB and NHL licensed team gear. It is a virtual world that incorporates a social aspect into sports and card collecting. If you’re starting from scratch, check out the How-To Videos to get more information about all that UpperDeckU has to offer!
This UpperDeckU Jeter appearance marks a new point in time for the industry, as we discover more and more kids are veering away from traditional card collecting and are seeking more from a hobby. It’s no shock that kids are spending their free time online, so why not bring the hobby to them directly? UpperDeckU is the perfect avenue in which kids can embrace card collecting within a social virtual world, which encompasses chatting with friends, trading cards, playing games, and best of all, exclusively meeting some of the world’s most praised athletes. I’m anxiously awaiting this incredible opportunity to see how the kids respond to chatting with Jeter live and curious what great questions they’ll come up with. Perhaps, “When you were younger, did you ever imagine you’d be interviewed online with hundreds of kids actively involved”? My guess is “no”, but the possibilities are exciting to think about. I foresee these appearances becoming more and more pertinent within Upper Deck and the industry as a whole, as players can connect with numerous kids at once live, online.

In addition to the UpperDeckU appearance, Jeter will meet and have lunch with five incredible contest winners and their guests: each collected the amazing 6,661 card Yankee Stadium Legacy set! The UDU appearance is actually centered around this meet-and-greet, where these hardcore Yankees collectors get the once in a lifetime opportunity to hang out with Derek Jeter. This appearance is well warranted, and is truly an incredible collection to complete. After Jeter meets and has lunch with the winners at the stadium, he’ll be handed off to me for the UpperDeckU appearance.
It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it.
I’ll have another post as well as some video and pictures to share after the event, so stay tuned!

Talk about cutting it close. When Leo Wiznitzer of Panama City, Panama, heard about the grand prize associated with Upper Deck’s Yankee Stadium Legacy (YSL) Collection promotion – having lunch with none other than Yankees Team Captain Derek Jeter – he found new incentive to complete his card-collecting odyssey. The 6,600-card hunt, which Wiznitzer began nearly a year ago, was about to culminate. But there was still something missing: three cards! And Upper Deck’s April 30th deadline to submit entries was looming large.
“I had doubts I would ever finish the set,” said Wiznitzer, a 59-year-old non-practicing Panamanian architect and self-employed businessman who routinely visits Miami. “It seemed like everybody was looking for the same few cards and whenever they were listed, somebody would always get there before me. I just kept looking and looking, but they were never there.”

It’s a good thing Wiznitzer befriended fellow YSL collector Joshua Adams of Largo, Florida along the way. It was Adams – having just submitted his YSL set to Upper Deck ten days prior for verification – who was the one that informed Wiznitzer just one week ago of the meet-and-greet grand prize with Jeter.

“He didn’t know anything about it, but once I told him what it was, he was determined to finish it – and I was determined to help him,” said Adams, a 32-year-old swimming pool and spa service repairman. “He had been so generous to me throughout my YSL quest that I figured the least I could do was return the favor.”
With the closing of the original Yankee Stadium at the end of the 2008 MLB season, Upper Deck created a 6,661-card insert set paying tribute to every single Yankees home game at the venue between 1923 and 2007. The cards packed out across 10 different Upper Deck baseball launches throughout the year and the 81 remaining cards encompassing the Yankees final season in ‘08 packed out inside Upper Deck’s 2009 Series One Baseball this past February.
Wiznitzer had just helped Adams by sending him eight YSL cards that the latter needed to complete his set. “I told Josh, ‘If I am ever going to get this done, it will have to be with your help.’ So I sent him the cards he needed in exchange for his help in completing mine.”
Returning the favor for Adams meant not only helping Wiznitzer find the elusive three cards, but to actually mail in his friend’s set – all seven binders’ worth – because Wiznitzer was returning to Panama City from Miami on Sunday, April 26, and wouldn’t be able to send it. “I had it with me in Miami,” said Wiznitzer. “I told Josh that I didn’t think I’d be able to make it, so he said to send him the set, he’d find the missing cards, and then he’d mail it in to Upper Deck on my behalf.”
Talk about trust; Wiznitzer’s set – all 73 pounds of it – arrived at Upper Deck headquarters on April 30, 2009. He had been painstakingly piecing together the collection since early last year, and he did it almost completely via the internet. “There are no hobby shops in Panama,” he said, “so I couldn’t just go and buy boxes of Upper Deck cards when I felt like it. Of course, when I visited the states, I would buy packs and boxes, but that wasn’t an effective way to do it. I bought a lot of cards on eBay and a lot of the cards on the Beckett.com website.”
Adams, on the other hand, didn’t start his pursuit until December, and only after watching an Upper Deck YouTube video of staff members verifying the contents of the original YSL set submission from Tommy Baxter of Little Rock, Arkansas. “When I saw that, I was definitely inspired,” said Adams. “And when I heard them say there were five openings [to meet Jeter] – and not just one – I made my mind up that I was going to get one of those spots.”
Adams and Wiznitzer will join Baxter, Kent Hayes of Sacramento, Calif., and Chuck Sauter of Pensacola, Florida, on June 16 in New York to have lunch with Jeter, take in batting practice on the field at the new Yankee Stadium and then watch the Yankees battle the Washington Nationals that evening from select seats. Upper Deck has taken temporary possession of all five YSL collections to ensure the authenticity of each submission.
Adams mentioned that he purchased 14 cases’ worth of Upper Deck baseball products and countless lots of YSL cards on eBay to find the majority of his cards. “But in the end, it was Leo’s help that got me there,” said Adams.
And vice versa.
