One of the surprise hits of last year’s trading card releases was Upper Deck’s “World of Sports” product as it offered collectors a unique pack opening experience with star athletes from basketball, baseball, swimming, skiing, ice hockey, figure skating, golf, lacrosse and mixed martial arts. The set returns arriving in stores today and it offers the same great diversity of top tier athletes, but mixes in some unique surprises like “Evolution” video cards as well.

Boasting a bigger base set than last year and the inclusion of football stars to the set, Upper Deck’s “World of Sports” set is sure to be a fan favorite. It features 400 cards from athletes like Nolan Ryan, Don Mattingly and Mike Schmidt from baseball; LeBron James, Michael Jordan and Jimmer Fredette from basketball; Bo Jackson, Drew Brees and Cam Newton from football; and Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux from hockey. Mix in other premium stars from soccer, golf, horse racing, mixed martial arts, track & field, lacrosse, extreme sports, racing and even dog sledding and you get the feel that Upper Deck’s “World of Sports” set is really a different kind of trading card release.

“No other company but Upper Deck could provide sports fans with such an amazingly diverse checklist of sports stars to collect,” said Jason Masherah, Upper Deck vice president of Marketing & Business Development. “And nowhere else can fans find such an assorted set of innovative insert cards from these stars to collect like signature cards, apparel cards, ‘Shadowbox’ trading cards and the ‘Evolution’ video trading cards. And as part of our continued effort to reduce redemption cards, all autograph content for ‘World of Sports’ is live in the product. It is completely redemption free.”

That’s right! The “Evolution” video trading cards made their debut last season in football, but these innovative inserts take on the hard court. Lucky collectors may find “Evolution” basketball video trading cards of superstars like Michael Jordan, Chris Paul and more inserted into new boxes of Upper Deck’s “World of Sport.” This is the first-ever video trading card for Michael Jordan and with copies of the cards extremely limited, they are sure to be in high demand. Video footage shows 60 seconds of highlights from college action of these hoop legends. Check them out:

Upper Deck’s new “World of Sports” set is currently available in stores now and each hobby box includes 20 packs with six cards per pack. Collectors can find three autographs or apparel cards in each box on average.

You have shoeboxes full of trading cards just sitting in your garage, basement, attic or closet, but you do not touch them. Your father told you not to as that would affect the value. He was always adamant about hanging on to them since his mother threw his cards away.

Are they worth something? Who knows? You haven’t touched them in ages and with the holidays coming up, maybe it is time to bring them out and see what they are worth. Here are some tips on how to assess the value of your cards.

Remember the old Beckett books that would tell you the pricing? Well those still exist and you can grab them at your local card shop or visit their website and look up the values online. There is a charge to the online service. The only problem is the values do not always represent what they cards would sell for today. Beckett certainly provides a good starting point, but there are other options to get more current and regional pricing on your collection. I would recommend picking up one of the monthly publications first to and looking through pricing on sets you knew you have. Do any big prices jump out at you? Do you recognize any cards you had? By running through the guide prior to starting, you’ll likely get a good feel for which cards you want to watch out for.

Beckett price guides are still around and can be a helpful tool to get a good feel on the value of your collection.

Once you’ve familiarized yourself with some of the key cards to look for, set aside an afternoon or a couple evenings where you can really dive into your collection. If you have thousands of cards, you are not going to want to price them all out, you just want to look for some of the better cards and get a feel for what you have. Get your cards in an area where you can spread them out and go through them where they will not be disturbed in the event you need to take a break. Maybe have some family members or friends help as well, you’ll find it can be a lot of fun going through them together. Quickly scan through them for some of the bigger names you know and especially cards you remember being valuable. You may have placed those in cases or sleeves to protect them.

As you start to separate them, pay attention to the condition of the cards. It is important to realize that cards with rough edges, centering issues, creases or fuzzy corners will all be valued less than their mint condition counterparts. Try to categorize them in terms of condition while you go through them. Also keep on the lookout for rookie cards, autograph cards or other special looking cards. Those tend to carry premium values to them.

Diving into boxes of cards can be a daunting task, but it can be a lot of fun as well.

Probably the best way to see what single cards are worth is to go where most single cards are sold; eBay. Once you have signed up for a membership, you will be able to view completed auctions to see what similar cards to what you have sold for. That will give you a very accurate feel for what specific cards are currently selling for today.

Another great option is to visit your local card shop. Many will specialize in appraising trading card collections so don’t be afraid to call ahead and ask about appraisals and how much they charge for those services. You can also do this at trading cards shows coming through your area, but there are not as many as there used to be.

You may find you have a situation where some of the cards you have are so limited and rare that you just cannot find pricing information on them. While Upper Deck cannot provide pricing details on what cards currently sell for, you can ask our community of savvy collectors by posting images and details of your collection to the Upper Deck Facebook page. You may even find some fans who are interested in purchasing them from you there.

You will likely find you do not have enough to retire early on unfortunately, but as you go through them, hopefully it helps you remember what you really loved about them. It wasn’t really the values as much as it was how they made you feel. How they brought you closer to the game you loved. How they made you feel about the players like the rookies who never panned out and that one rookie that did. Maybe the experience of going through the cards will bring you back to collecting and if it doesn’t, just know there are other options besides selling your cards on eBay, to a dealer or a collector. Think about donating some to a local Boys & Girls Club to share that experience you enjoyed so much with others. There is another great charity called Cards to Kids that specializes in getting cards into the hands of kids for you. Any donation to charities like these is a tax deduction and we all could use a few more of those.

On a last note, I feel inclined to share that I sold the vast majority of my childhood collection through a variety of channels as I went through college. Most of my cards were from the 1980’s so I actually sold them off at a good time before people realized how mass produced they were causing values to plummet. Once I started working at Upper Deck I didn’t really find it necessary to restart my collection as I felt a closeness to the cards and hobby every day I walked in the office. One Christmas not too long ago my father gave me a crudely wrapped present of some cards he found of mine that I had not sold and it really brought on a rush of fond memories. I still have that small box and look at it from time to time. I’m glad I still have some of my original collection and wouldn’t part with it. If you are considering selling all your collection, make sure you hang on to a few of your favorites. You’ll be happy you did.

My goal as Upper Deck’s Customer Care Supervisor is to help educate our collectors and fans so they can have a better experience with our collectible products. I’ve found that we get a lot of similar calls into our call center so it is beneficial to share what those questions are and provide answers in a public format here on the blog. You will find some really great information about our industry just by going through some of these “Ask UD” segments here on the blog. If you have questions yourself, please feel free to leave a comment and “Ask UD!”

Gregg and the Customer Care team at Upper Deck work hard to answer all of the tough questions from our customers.

Here are some of the questions we’ve received recently in Customer Care:

Ask Upper Deck: I’m a shop owner and it would be very helpful for me to know when redemption cards are about to expire in a product so I can encourage my customers to open them now. Can you provide me a list? OR I want to purchase some older Upper Deck product, but I don’t want to get an expired redemption since they cannot be honored. Do you have a list of which products have redemptions in them that are about to expire?

Gregg Cacioppo: This is a question we get fairly frequently and we want to help our Certified Diamond Dealers and collectors out by providing a “Last Call” list of products that contain redemptions that are about to expire. Remember, we do not have a program in place to exchange expired cards so this serves as the “Last Call” to open these products and get your redemption cards registered with us online before they are no longer valid.

The following products have time-sensitive redemption cards that are set to expire in the near future:

Baseball Expiration Date
2009 Goodwin Champions Baseball 8/31/2011
2009 SP Authentic Baseball 9/18/2011
2009 Sweet Spot Baseball 10/14/2011
Basketball Expiration Date
2008-09 Exquisite Collection Basketball 7/31/2011
2009-10 SP Signature Edition Basketball 8/10/2011
2009-10 Upper Deck Basketball 9/7/2011
2009-10 Exquisite Collection Basketball 9/24/2011
2009-10 SP Game-Used Basketball 10/14/2011
Football Expiration Date
2009 SPx Football 9/14/2011
2009 UD Black Football 10/12/2011
2009 SP Threads Football 10/17/2011
2009 SP Signature Edition Football 10/19/2011
Hockey Expiration Date
2009-10 O-Pee-Chee Hockey 9/10/2011
2009-10 Upper Deck Black Hockey 10/1/2011

Ask Upper Deck: I see that my 2010-11 NHL SP Authentic Mystery redemptions are now shipping. Any idea on what I may be receiving?

Gregg Cacioppo: We certainly have been fielding a lot of calls on these cards and we can appreciate that customers have been eager to find out what they will be receiving. The main reason for us moving to a program where we do not reveal exactly which card fans may be receiving was to allow us to cut ties with problem signers sooner and get cards in the hands of our fans. This change helps to eliminate situations where we are trying to get cards completed for several years, improving the turnaround time and overall customer experience.

This dual signed card is one of the cards in the mix for the mystery redemption program for this season.

That being said, we are happy to report that we do in fact have enough autograph content in house to begin redeeming most of these cards. They will be shipped out randomly so if you are waiting on one of these cards, you will not know who you will receive until you open the package, much like opening a pack. It is possible we may receive a couple other cards in that will get integrated into the mix later, but we are content with going ahead with these cards at this time as we have enough inventory to handle the total redemption requests.

This is likely the most high-end card from the mystery redemptions. These cards will all be shipped randomly to fans waiting on them.

Ask Upper Deck: I am a huge basketball collector and I’m really excited about 2011 Upper Deck All-Time Greats Basketball, but most of the basketball products I’ve been buying lately have a lot of redemptions. Will there be tons of redemptions in 2011 Upper Deck All-Time Greats Basketball?

Gregg Cacioppo: We have talked about all the things we do to prevent redemptions in new products here before. With regard to the 2011 Upper Deck All-Time Greats product, we delayed the release several times in order to secure as many signing sessions as possible with athletes in the set. We did not want to release a high-end product like this with high rates of redemptions. Our efforts paid off and I am happy to share there are less than 100 total redemption cards in this entire product. This is a pretty amazing feat considering how much hard-signed content exists in this set and we hope it provides for a more thrilling pack opening experience for our fans. Check out some images of the cards!

Ask Upper Deck: When is 2010-11 NHL The Cup coming out? When is 2010-11 NHL The Cup coming out? WHEN is 2010-11NHL The Cup coming out???

Gregg Cacioppo: This is probably the most frequently asked question of the week. Yes, there certainly is a lot of excitement around the release of 2010-11 NHL The Cup and we are thrilled to be able to bring this product to our customers again for another season. The release date was highly contingent on the acquisition of autograph content and we now have enough autograph cards in house to proceed. Upper Deck will be releasing 2010-11 NHL The Cup on August 31, 2011.

Upper Deck's super-premium release of The Cup is always one of the most anticipated dates of the year for hockey collectors.

There have been a few questions about when the checklist will be released as well. As we have shared before, one of the ways we can prevent redemptions is to remove them from a product when we are packing it out. As out staff heads out to North Carolina to begin the process of physically hand-packing out the product, they will make a decision on which redemption cards we will want to remove from the product. We try to pull lower value cards or cards that we think may be pending for awhile. This means we will ultimately make less product and less revenue for the release, but it is worth it to us to make sure our customers have an enjoyable pack opening experience with less redemptions. That being said, we will finalize the checklist when we return and hopefully have it to fans as the product releases.

By the way, make sure to “like” Upper Deck’s Facebook page as we will be previewing images of the cards during the pack out process. As we saw last year, fans really enjoyed getting a sneak peek at many of the great cards in the set.

Never Bet Against Michael Jordan

Posted by: Chris Carlin | Comments (1)

There’s nothing Michael Jordan loves more than a challenge. Nothing that gets his competitive juices firing on all cylinders like someone saying he can’t do something. He became one of the greatest basketball players of all-time by repeatedly proving people wrong, especially those who bet against him. Today Michael Jordan is still proving naysayers wrong and proving that he is someone that you never want to bet against. Check out what happened in Lake Tahoe earlier this month where a fan bet Michael that he couldn’t hit the green. How do you think that turned out? Just take a look.

Jordan loves to interact with some of his fans as we have highlighted here on the blog before. While it is great to see fans get enjoy some time with Jordan, it is exceptionally difficult to grab an autograph of MJ at public events. With all the pushing and screaming, getting a good quality signature is even harder. And then to prove he actually signed it, you’ll be lucky if you have a blurry picture from a friend trying to get an image of you with MJ. Just take a look at how crazy it can get:

If you are looking to grab a jaw dropping autograph from the games best player, look no further than your friends at Upper Deck. This Friday Upper Deck will be releasing a product called 2011 All-Time Greats Basketball that will be LOADED with hard-signed, authentic Michael Jordan autograph cards. If you’ve never had the luck of pulling a Jordan autograph card before, this is your shot. And if you don’t get lucky enough to grab a MJ autograph, the checklist is incredibly strong, so you will likely not be disappointed.

These are just some of the amazing autographed Michael Jordan cards that can be found in 2011 All-Time Greats Basketball from Upper Deck.

Also, Upper Deck Authenticated continues to have an exclusive agreement with Michael Jordan for signed memorabilia and we bring some of the most compelling pieces in the industry your way. Just take a look by clicking here.

Producing authentic, super-premium collectibles that are truly unique is what we do best here at Upper Deck. Like the new Michael Jordan "Tegata" piece that features an imprint of MJ's palm.

While we have learned that you should never bet against Michael Jordan, if you are a sports fan, he remains an athlete that you should absolutely invest in. He gave you the moments that gave you goose bumps. He made you believe that he really could fly. Promise yourself that one day you will own an authentic signed Michael Jordan item. It is more than a collectible. It’s a cherished memory. It’s a belief that somewhere within all of us is the ability to do the unbelievable. It’s hope. It’s Upper Deck.
