Shop owner Steve Mandy grew up in Hillside, New Jersey, the home of Yankees’ great Phil Rizzuto. When he was just five years old, he began visiting “the Scooter’s” home several times a year where Rizzuto would bring Mandy and his buddies into his trophy room to recount his playing days. There were times when Mandy and his friends would arrive so early on Saturday mornings that Rizzuto was still in bed following a late night game that he had just called as a broadcaster. On those days, Rizzuto’s wife would take the gang into the trophy room, put cartoons on the TV and feed them breakfast. After a while Phil would walk in, still in his robe and slippers, and spend some time. Steve also met other Yankee legends who would visit Rizzuto on occasion, like Yogi Berra, Mickey Mantle and even Joe DiMaggio. Those meetings lit the fire; his passion for autographs and collecting was born.

Mandy grew up spending plenty of time with Yankee great, Phil Rizzuto!

In 1982, a close friend – a Red Sox fan in fact – told Steve that she had seen a newspaper ad about an upcoming baseball card show where Ted Williams would be appearing. She asked Steve to go with her and he agreed. After taking just one step into the card show, Steve had an epiphany that this was what he wanted to do as a job. Two months later, with Joe DiMaggio as the scheduled guest signer, Steve rented a table at his first card show and displayed some of his cherished autographs.

Joe DiMaggio also had a profound impact on getting Steve Mandy into the business.

Through the years he expanded to cards, new and vintage, memorabilia and more. He promoted shows in the late ‘80s and was a partner in his first store during that same time period. In 1994 he retired from his longtime occupation as a publication artist and art director, to become a store owner full time.

Steve still has many of his most cherished autographs from Rizzuto, a signed “Mr. Coffee” coffee pot from DiMaggio, and even the original program from Mickey Mantle’s funeral in 1995. Steve loves being a part of the trading card industry and tries to pass his passion on to everyone who walks into his store, Attack of the Baseball Cards.

Plenty to see at Attack of the Baseball Cards, make a point to stop by!

“A lot of people ask me why I named the store Attack of the Baseball Cards,” said Mandy. “While spending an evening with friends, my task for everyone was to come up with a trade name that would start with an ‘A’ so I would be listed first in the phone book. We blew out names for almost an hour before getting tired and moving on to watch television. Well a PBS channel happened to be on with the cult film ‘Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.’ Someone said that we should call the store ‘Attack of the Baseball Cards’ where you can have giant baseball cards chasing people down the block. Everyone laughed except me and I took that idea to the bank. In fact my first ads showed me covered with baseball cards with only my face and hands sticking out. Needless to say, the name stuck and no one ever forgets it.”

Attack of the Baseball Cards is now in its 28th year in the hobby. This year they are celebrating the 12th Anniversary of being named runner-up for the National “Sportscard Hobby Store-of-the-Year Award.” The store is located on the Union/Springfield border with the entrance in the back of the building. Steve has worked to make Attack of the Baseball Cards a kid-friendly environment for youngsters in the area, having learned how meaningful it is from his own time reminiscing with the likes of Phil Rizzuto. The “Summer Student Essay Contest” has become a staple program at Attack of the Baseball Cards and Larry Jordan of Upper Deck (brother of Michael Jordan) served as a judge for the 2008 contest. Steve also runs Baseball Card Camps for children and Upper Deck sponsored the summer session this past year. In July 2008, Attack of the Baseball Cards was selected by Upper Deck and Major League Baseball as one of only five Official Baseball Card Headquarters stores for that summer’s MLB All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium!

Upper Deck has run several promotions in conjunction with Attack of the Baseball Cards.

Mandy brings more than 28 years of hobby experience to help customers with their every need. Listed in “Who’s Who In America” Mandy has been a guest speaker at schools, hobby conventions and seminars throughout the country. He’s also done appraisals of private collections and estates for tax purposes and insurance companies and law enforcement agencies. In 1999 and again in October 2004, Mandy was honored by the Township of Union (NJ) with the Mayors Award for contributions to the community and children in the area. In April 2007 the Township of Union (NJ) once again honored Attack of the Baseball Cards.

One of the good guys, Steve Mandy constantly works in the best interest of his customers.

Each month Upper Deck spotlights one of its hobby retailing partners and shares some of the reasons why you should visit their shop. I can’t put my finger on the first time I met Mark and Donna Rubin. It is not whether or not they are worthy of remembrance (they are), but rather the fact that I’ve been working with them for so long, I’m just very used to them always being there. And thank goodness they have been. You will be hard pressed to find two individuals more committed to helping their customers, running fun events in their store and serving as an inspiration to many other shops. I’m excited they can share a little bit about what makes their shop so special.

American Legends

Scarsdale, NY 10583

Hours: Monday – Saturday: 11 am – 7 pm, Sunday: 12 – 5

“American Legends opened its doors in November of 1992 as a trading card and comic book store. Originally named One if by Cards, Two if by Comics, the 2,000-square-foot store expanded into more than just trading cards and comic books, so owners Mark and Donna Rubin changed the name to American Legends more than seven years ago.

“Our store offers everything for the collector including single cards from the early 1900s to the present as well as sealed card boxes of the latest releases as well as older issues, complete sets and packs; a huge selection of sports signed items from past and present icons; team fan collectibles, comics and comic and card supplies. We are actively purchasing vintage sports cards pre-1970 and before.

“Mark has been in the card business for more than 30 years and boasts expert knowledge of all things trading cards. His most recent purchases include two rare 1941 Play Ball 24-card uncut sheets comprising two thirds of the complete set including Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey and the rookie card of Pee Wee Reese and amazing run of complete pre-war hockey sets including the 1912 C57, 1933 OPC Series A, V252 Canadian Gum and V357 Ice Kings Sets.

“Over the years we have hosted numerous athletes for public signings including baseball Hall-of-Famers Tom Seaver, Johnny Bench, Jim Palmer, Duke Snider and Pete Rose; basketball’s Walt Frazier, Joakim Noah and Rudy Gay; hockey’s Adam Graves, Alexei Kovalev and Eddie Giacomin; New York Jets star cornerback Darrelle Revis and rookie running back Shonn Greene, New York Giants Super Bowl Champion Aaron Ross and many, many more. Some of our signings have been to raise money for various charities and people in need because we feel it is important to give back to the community that has given us so much.

You never know who is going to be stopping by American Legends!

“We also hold case rips every month featuring cards from all of the major sports. These events see many of the same loyal customers and many of them have gotten to know each other, which makes for a real fun-filled atmosphere. We have also hosted appearances by Jim Spence Authentication (JSA), conduct children’s birthday parties featuring the pack attack game and are always looking for new promotions to excite our customers.

An excited young man shows off his Upper Deck Goudey box at the shop. Hopefully he didn't hurt his arms opening packs...

There is always something happening at American Legends. Be a part of it and stop by today!

So, if you’re in the NY area and haven’t yet found us, we invite you to visit us any time. If you plan to make a trip to NY in the future, definitely look us up. You’ll be glad you did!”

All-Pro Sportscards

Monday – Friday 12:00PM-6:00PM, Saturday 12:00PM-5:00PM and closed Sunday

Early in the NBA Playoffs, when Cleveland’s Joakim Noah called out the city of Cleveland and said that it “sucks,” I took exception to that. I’ve been to Cleveland on several occasions and have enjoyed myself each time. I love the downtown area, taking in an Indians game during the summer, Tommy Boy, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Drew Carey, great dining and just 30 miles south in Cuyahoga Falls you have All-Pro Sportscards.Rich Rinella collected cards for most of his life and it just so happened that when he lost his job after 15 years, a friend he knew was looking to sell their hobby store. After discussing options with his wife, they decided to take over the business and All-Pro Sportscards was given new life. Rich had set up at shows previously so he was familiar with the business and able to serve as a knowledgeable advisor to his customers. His customer base took notice of his passion for the business and his efforts to meet and exceed their expectations. In a little more than seven years since Rich took over, he’s already moved to a bigger location and sales are stronger than ever. Not only does he take very good care of his customers, but he also loves to run in-store promotions to give something back to his loyal customers. He’s had JSA Authentication days, rip nights, in-store drawings, box battles, trade nights and a HUGE annual Christmas party. Upper Deck has participated in some of these events by providing items to help out and use as giveaways. And, All-Pro Sportscards is a kid-friendly destination. The other great thing about All-Pro Sportscards is they are just a hop, skip and a jump from Akron, the hometown of Upper Deck exclusive basketball spokesman and reigning NBA MVP LeBron James. All-Pro Sportscards is the home to the largest selection of LeBron’s autograph cards and Upper Deck Authenticated memorabilia in all of northeastern Ohio. Rich is a big fan of LeBron’s and does a lot to make sure he is fully stocked on Upper Deck items from “King James” for his customers. In fact, in almost every conversation or e-mail exchange I have with him, Rich always sneaks in, “So when are you guys going to have LeBron do an appearance at my store.” He’s hit me up with it so many times, he’s almost got me convinced.Besides LeBron, All-Pro Sportscards boasts a huge inventory of thousands of jersey and autograph cards from all sports as well as all the latest packs, boxes and cases. They have new and vintage inventory in stock. And maybe, just maybe, LeBron himself may be stopping by sometime in the future. You just never know.

I’ve been working with Ian Taylor of Taylor’s Baseball Cards for a number of years now, especially when I was in Customer Service.  You will seldom find a shop owner more committed than Ian Taylor when it comes to working on behalf of his customers.  Too frequently, store owners are negatively portrayed as guys who are trying to take advantage of their customers.  Ian is the complete antithesis of that negative stereotype, which is one of the reasons he’s been successful for so long in this business.  It’s also the reasons why we want to feature Taylor’s Baseball Cards as our Retailer of the Month.  So let’s turn it over to Ian . . .

blog1

My name is Ian Taylor and I opened my store, Taylors Baseball Cards, at the tail end of 1991 to maximize sales during the holidays.  To my surprise, we are still open today, and doing just fine.

During this 18-year run I also had an opportunity to co-promote the 1996 National Convention in Anaheim, California.  That show had an attendance of over 80,000 paid consumers and 1,000 dealers.  Even today, it is still considered by many collectors to be the best National ever because we had all of the manufacturers and leagues come together and attend one huge show.  The show also had over 100 athletes at the autograph pavilion including Muhammad Ali, Wilt Chamberlain, Wayne Gretzky, Joe DiMaggio, Sandy Koufax, Joe Namath and many more Hall of Famers and legends of all sports.  It was really special to be involved in and I’d encourage anyone who has never been to a National Convention to check it out!

To keep things fun and exciting for my customers, I frequently run promotions like pack wars, giveaways, in-store signings and trade days.  I ran the store myself for the first three years and then hired Joe Fennell, a smart, passionate customer of mine, who is still with me today.  We strive on having all of the current products at reasonable prices.  We mix in a nice selection of closeouts, singles, supplies and autographed plaques and memorabilia to really give our customers a nice variety.

blog2

We also have a nice selection of graded cards from all sports, from vintage to present and you’ve got to stop in to check out some of the early T206 cards we have.  We have an extensive selection of local players available at all price points and love to trade other stores out of the area for players that fit into their inventory scheme.

Another thing we like to do is help our customers sell items on eBay if they want to go that route.  We help them generate top dollar on their cards or memorabilia by having great feedback and making sure we market their items just right.

blog4

Although we are located in Southern California, our top sport over the last two years has been Hockey.  We’ve found that Hockey cards, without a doubt, remain an untouched area where there is a lot of potential for collectors and speculators.  We frequently teach our customers more about the Hockey market and the hobby in general through weekly gatherings at the store in a comfortable environment: sipping sodas and watching sports on our TV.

Our memorabilia selection is Upper Deck Authenticated and PSA/DNA authenticated so our customers know they are getting the real thing.  We also carry a variety of entertainment and gaming products for those customers not that interested in sports, but love a good TCG.

blog5

We love to help our customers make decisions on product, singles and investments.  Whether you want a $1 pack, or a pack of Exquisite, we are here for the long haul and will help you making these fun decisions.  Our store is small, but full and organized with a great selection of product for young and old.  Since we are located right down the street from Knott’s Berry Farm in Orange County California, we are lucky to get customers from all over the country and have a great local following.  So stop in during your next visit to Southern California, we’re sure you will be happy you did!

I had heard about Tim’s Baseball Cards in Chicago, IL over the years, but never had much interaction with him unfortunately. Then, earlier this week, I got an e-mail from another hobby shop in the Illinois area who said, “Did you hear about Tim’s?” Then I got another one from one of his customers saying, “Did you hear about Tim?” And it’s continued all week long. It’s pretty amazing what has happened to Tim and his shop, which is why we have selected them as our Retailer of the Month.

Tim Herron opened up Tim’s Baseball Card shop in 2004 and at that time, it certainly wasn’t much to look at. He went to school right across the street from the location he opened up at and it’s been his lifelong dream to open his own business, in his home town, doing something he loves. Today, Tim’s shop has a lot more to offer than the two showcases he started with; but there’s no denying that compared to some shops, you would consider him a “little guy.” Well, not anymore.

Miller High Life decided that instead of doing a Super Bowl advertisement where they feature their product, they would buy a commercial and give it to the little guys. They took an interesting approach by focusing on smaller businesses who could never afford an advertisement during the big game (the people who need it). The marketing team at Miller High Life did a nationwide search of businesses that might fit into this concept of giving the little guy a shot on the big stage and wouldn’t you know it, they picked Tim’s Baseball Cards as one of the four businesses to be featured in the advertisement.

“It really hasn’t sunk in that this is real,” said Tim Herron on being selected. “It’s a real fun commercial, real simple, nothing fancy. Everyone was being themselves, no acting or anything.”

Herron will be appearing alongside the Miller High Life delivery truck guy, Windell Middlebrooks. But make no doubt about it, Tim will be the star.

You can see some teaser footage for the advertisement and see Tim talking about the shoot on Miller’s website at www.millerhighlife.com (note: you need to be 21 or over to view the content).

Tim’s shop has everything collectors love from new unopened wax to vintage product. He’s got singles to help collectors put sets together and memorabilia as well. What he’s really going to need though, in all likelihood, is more space.

He’ll be hosting a big party the day before the game on Saturday from 12:00-4:00 and Upper Deck has sent him a lot of prize support to help out. The party will be one you don’t want to miss, “There will be food, drinks, raffles, giveaways and the first sixty people are going to get a box of cards FREE,” said Herron. “Everyone is coming out so we just want to have some fun and give back to the customers for being loyal. I have no idea how this will help business, but nothing is bigger than commercials on the Super Bowl.” He’s right!

“There’s a lot of nonsense ads out there about talking babies and dancing monkeys and different things. We just wanted to be just a true High Life commercial that gives it back to the guys that live it every day,” said Abegg.

In these difficult economic times, it’s refreshing to see a billion dollar company adopt an approach like this and give back to the little guy. Kudos to you Miller High Life!

So if you are in Chicago, love sports and want to help out one of the “little guys,” visit Tim’s Baseball Card Shop the day before the big game, or any day for that matter: he’s open seven days a week. Maybe he’ll even give you an autograph.
