Each month Upper Deck spotlights one of its valued collectors to showcase their collection or pursuits. The great thing about sports collectors is that they are all very different in what they collect, how they collect, and what they do once they have the cards they were looking for. We found Matt W. on a collecting message board where he shared with other collectors that he was chasing the very rare set of 2011 Goodwin Champions Presidential Masterpiece painted cards. I reached out to him and after finally completing the set, he allowed us to profile him for the Upper Deck Blog. We hope you enjoy his story on completing this set of very limited cards of all the U.S. Presidents.

“I am a big fan of the throwback type products like Upper Deck’s 2011 Goodwin Champions. However, I wasn’t planning on collecting this product until I learned of the Presidential Masterpiece painted cards. When collectors started opening packs of the product, I began to see these unique cards popping up for sale online. I knew a friend of mine busted several cases of this product, so I called him up to ask if he pulled any of these fantastic cards. He did. In fact, he pulled several, and we were able to work out a deal for all of them! That day was July 2, 2011.

Jefferson was Matt's favorite U.S. President so acquiring this card was a real thrill!

“As I started doing more research about these cards, I began asking questions in various on-line forums. All kinds of people were amazed at the quality of artwork contained on these cards. People started to wonder if anyone would make a run at a complete set. Some said it would be amazing. Others said it would be impossible. Hearing the latter fueled my passion to put this set together, and I wanted to do it before this year’s National Sports Card Convention in Chicago (NSCC), if possible.

“When I learned 13 of the 43 Presidents were redemptions, I knew I had to get them as soon as possible in order to allow Upper Deck enough time to get them back to me before the NSCC. Seeing the video with Grant Sandground showing off these redemptions was comforting because I then knew Upper Deck had them in-hand. Once the 13th redemption arrived and I entered the code, I called Upper Deck’s Customer Care and asked if there was a way they could bring my redemptions to the NSCC. They said they would see what they could do. Low and behold, all 13 cards arrived at my door the day before I left for Chicago. It was a pleasant surprise to say the least, but I was still 4 cards short of the complete set. The question then became, ‘Will I be able to find them in Chicago?’

“As luck would have it, I ran into another friend of mine named Patrick at the show, and he said he would help me find the last four I needed. I couldn’t believe it when shortly after discussing this with him, he called and said he found one! I quickly made the deal to acquire it, and not too long later, he called and said another one just showed up. Before the show was over, he helped me find three of the four cards I needed. I headed home still needing one more card to complete my set and I was a little disappointed hoping to finish the collection there. I had yet to see a single Dwight D. Eisenhower, and of all people, he was from my home state. I had to find his card. On September 1, one day shy of exactly two months from the moment I decided to chase this set, the final card arrived to complete my set. I finally landed the Eisenhower!

History in the making! Matt and his family were able to put together the entire set of 43 U.S. President Masterpiece painted cards together!

“Since then, I have been fortunate to acquire the Kennedy numbered 1/10, (the only one with the flag painted in the background), and a few other 1/10s. I have also spoken to the main artist, Jared Kelley, a few times via email. It’s been wonderful to learn some of his insight about this amazing set. It has been a true pleasure to put together. In the world of collecting cards, nothing is impossible these days.

Matt's son shows off one of their favorite cards of John F. Kennedy!

“Some of my favorites are the Reagan and Kennedy with the flags in the background; Thomas Jefferson # 1/10, (my favorite President); The George Washington that Mr. Kelley signed on the front; and of course the Lincoln. Having these cards in-hand and seeing the amazing artwork up close is hard to describe. I will be looking forward to collecting more artwork type cards in the future. I see Jared painted some cards for your Parkhurst Champions brand, including Gretzky. Hopefully I will be lucky enough to locate one of each of those, and I will be looking forward to future products that contain his work.”

Matt was able to get one of the super rare variations that has the artist's signature on the front.

Working on completing the set together obviously brought a lot of smiles with Matt and his boys.

One of Matt's sons shows off the U.S. President that started it all; George Washington!

One thing that Matt doesn’t share is that the experience was truly a family affair and you can see that with some of the pictures of his boys holding the cards. Although Matt financed this chase, I’m sure the boys helped out as well. There’s no doubt that collecting with your kids is a great way to build a bond with your children and create some wonderful memories. Congratulations to Matt and his family on putting together this amazing set.

Each month Upper Deck spotlights one of its valued collectors to showcase their collection or pursuits. The great thing about sports collectors is that they are all very different in what they collect, how they collect, and what they do once they have the cards they were looking for. Kenney Der is a passionate fan of Drew Doughty from the Los Angeles Kings. What makes this interesting is that when he pulled his first Doughty card, Kenney didn’t even know who he was. I always find it interesting as to what makes someone decide to collect a certain player. Check out Kenney’s story and find out what the spark was to compile such an amazing collection of Doughty cards and collectibles.

“My name is Kenney Der and I live in Grande Prairie, Alberta, up here in Canada. Grand Prairie is about four hours north west of Edmonton to give you a better idea of where I’m at. I have been collecting cards on and off for about 10 years. I first gained interest in the sport of hockey when I was about seven years old, staying up late watching the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames hockey games with my father. I didn’t start collecting hockey cards until I was about 11 years old when my dad would take me to the local convenience stores or gas stations to pick up a couple packs of cards (if I behaved properly, of course).

Kenney Der sits with some of his favorite Drew Doughty collectibles.

“As I got older I stopped collecting sports cards entirely, but kept everything I had amassed throughout the years. I didn’t become passionate about collecting again until I stumbled onto a YouTube hockey card box break video. It made me remember how much fun opening boxes was so I purchased Upper Deck’s Black Diamond as I remembered that product well and also decided to try some higher-end product with SP Game-Used and Ultimate. From each of those three boxes I pulled a Drew Doughty insert card which I thought was pretty cool. I got the Black Diamond Quad Rookie, SP Game-Used Rookie numbered 06/99 and an Ultimate redemption for his rookie card numbered to 399.

“The funny thing is that I had no idea who he was until I did some research and discovered Drew was a top NHL draft pick. I watched some of his Guelph Storm highlights on YouTube and I was really impressed by this defenseman who plays such good offense. I thought to myself it can’t be bad to start collecting a top-drafted defenseman, so my hunt for Doughty began. I decided to start by getting one of every Doughty Upper Deck rookie card and after I completed that task, I started my hunt for every Upper Deck Doughty card numbered to two or higher.

This is just a small sampling of Der's impressive Doughty trading card collection.

“I have obtained 94.19% of every Upper Deck Drew Doughty card up to the most current product [‘10-11 SP Authentic]. I currently own 373 of a possible 396 non 1-of-1 Upper Deck cards of Doughty. The total number of cards includes cards not listed on the Upper Deck checklist such as the LA Kings team, OPC Blank Backs, OPC Box bottoms, BAP Player’s Club parallel and the Upper Deck French Series 1 set. My current collection consists of 36 Upper Deck 1-of-1 cards of Doughty (24 of them being printing plate cards). Many are sought after rookie card inserts like Drew Doughty’s Ultimate Rookie Shield and Property Of. Aside from my Upper Deck cards I own over 560 different Drew Doughty cards from combined products such as Upper Deck, Panini, ITG and Guelph Storm Issued cards. Altogether I have collected a grand combined total of 54 1-of-1 cards from the various manufacturers.

These are Kenney's top five Doughty cards. Some AMAZING cards here!

“One of the things I love about collecting a rookie is to watch him transform into a legitimate star. It has been so rewarding and fun to see Drew Doughty achieve a heightened level of stardom, especially watching his superb play with Team Canada in the Olympics. I am also grateful of having the opportunity to watch Drew live three times this year [season opener in Vancouver and two Edmonton Oilers games] and I also look forward to possibly meeting Drew in Los Angeles next year for the Tip-A-King event. I’d love to get my two game-worn jerseys signed by him.

Kenney also has a great collection of signed and game-worn jerseys of Drew Doughty.

“I’ve started a website to help show off my collection to other fans, but also to help track down cards I’m missing. Right now I’m really looking for some of his ‘08-09 UD Black Letterman autograph patch cards, in particular the U, G, T and Y cards. If you wouldn’t mind helping a fellow collector out, take a look at my collection and “Want List” for Doughty cards. Email me at kennyder@telus.net if you can help out with any of these. I’d appreciate it. In addition, thank you, Upper Deck. for giving me the opportunity to share my Drew Doughty collection with you and your fans.”

The pleasure is all ours, Kenney. It’s so amazing to see what has come from just opening three boxes. Your collection is amazing and you should be very proud of it!

Each month Upper Deck spotlights one of its valued collectors to showcase their collection or pursuits. The great thing about sports collectors is that they are all very different in what they collect, how they collect, and what they do once they have the cards they were looking for. Ron Firestone is the type of collector who just loves the thrill of finding great cards when opening more premium packs. He has a fantastic collection and has some great cards he has either purchased or traded for, but the cards that have the most meaning to him are the ones he pulled.

I frequently get updates from him on his collecting pursuits. One of his biggest quests has been to pull a Michael Jordan signed cards from a pack, but sadly, his luck has not been very good. Check out his story on this quest below:

“I have been a sports card collector for decades going back to 1959 and to me there is nothing like pulling that special card you are looking for from packs. I really got the bug in 1997 when Upper Deck released their first Michael Jordan autograph jersey card randomly in packs. More than anything I wanted to find one of those cards and I opened pack after pack to no avail. Opening boxes wasn’t enough so I moved on to opening cases, but still Michael’s signed cards never found their way to my packs.

“I took up my pursuit again for Upper Deck’s 1998-99 Basketball set hoping to find a Michael Jordan autograph or jersey card. While on a business trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico, I stopped by one of my favorite card shops to see if I could find MJ. As I walked into Bubba’s Baseball Bullpen I immediately saw five packs by the register and cracked them open with no luck. Bubba let me choose which box to open next and I pulled a sweet Jordan insert card, but still no autograph or jersey card. I opened some more, but realized I was going to be late for a meeting if I didn’t get going.

“As I go behind the wheel I remembered there was another open box with five packs left in it. I couldn’t just leave those there right? So I headed back in, busted them open and realized I had found something really special with a 1998-99 Upper Deck Michael Jordan jersey card. I started yelling and going crazy in the shop I was so excited. And while it didn’t have MJ’s autograph, it gave me hope that my day would come.

This card was one of Ron's first big Michael Jordan pulls.

“Next season I didn’t find the elusive Jordan autograph card either, but scored TWO Jordan jersey cards. At the time these were a really big deal so I was pretty happy. As the years progressed and jersey cards became a standard in every product release I was able to pull more Jordan jersey cards, but still no autographs.

“I came close a couple times in 2001 where other collectors opened the packs I was looking at to find Jordan autographs. The worst were some packs that were moved to the dollar bin. I was so close to breaking them and finally a young boy got them for getting good marks on his report card. And wouldn’t you know it, he pulled a Michael Jordan autograph card. It was hard to be mad about it, he was super excited.

“For 2004-05 SP Game-Used I felt that luck would finally be on my side. I got a box and made quick work of opening it up to discover a redemption card. Like most collectors, I’m not a fan of redemption cards, but I know Upper Deck only has a few signings with Jordan a year so maybe I am finally in luck. I quickly turned the card around to discover it was indeed Michael Jordan! I went down to my knees, just totally thrilled. The only issue was, it was just not the same as pulling an actual autograph card of MJ. I had to wait awhile until he signed and it just took some of the excitement out of the pull waiting for him to sign it.

“I had my Jordan autograph card, but I wanted the thrill of opening a pack and seeing his signature looking back at me, so my quest continued. Year after year whether I was opening up low priced products or higher-end releases like Ultimate Collection or Exquisite, my hunt was fruitless. I got some great cards of course, but not the main one I was looking for. To make matters worse, it felt like every collector around me was pulling them. Often I would get to the shop just to hear the story of another collector who beat me to getting a Jordan autograph card.

“I was starting to grow discouraged, convinced that Upper Deck somehow knew which packs I was opening and deliberately withheld Jordan autographs from them. In my frequent talks with Chris Carlin at Upper Deck, he would provide encouragement, but I was really feeling like it would never happen for me.

“When I head about Upper Deck’s new SP Authentic Basketball set I was so excited as there hasn’t been much exciting in the way of new Basketball product out for awhile and the though of pulling a Michael Jordan or LeBron James autograph had me interested again. I tried a box one night, but didn’t do so well. I came back again later on in the week and had the shop owner pick me a box, I got skunked again.

“Then the shop owner set two boxes in front of me and told me to pick my next box. It was my birthday so I picked the box with the serial number closest to my age and then started the rip. I started off with an Ed Davis jersey card, then a nice Larry Bird hologram card followed by a few more inserts. With just four packs left I pulled a Bill Walton autograph which had me pretty excited. Figuring I had received what I should, I opened up the last packs with little hope of finding anything special. I opened a pack and saw a card with ‘NC’ which led me to believe I had pulled a MJ card of some type, perhaps a floor card. That is what it turned out to be, except this one was AUTOGRAPHED!!! I was finally holding one in my hand. The Michael Jordan Supreme Court autographed floor card was now mine.

At long last that elusive Michael Jordan autograph card had been found by Ron.

“The quest is over! The thrill of finally pulling it was amazing! Thank you Upper Deck for giving collectors like me the opportunity to own an amazing collectible like this.”

There is no better feeling that pulling an autograph card of one of the greatest basketball players of all time! Just ask Ron Firestone if you don't believe us.

Each month Upper Deck spotlights one of its valued collectors to showcase their collection. The great thing about sports collectors is that they are all very different in what they collect, how they collect their items, and what they do once they have them. If you do anything around hockey trading cards, you likely know Jeffrey Griffith. There are people you see frequently at shows that you steer clear of and those who you are drawn to. Jeffrey is one of those who you are drawn to. He has a great energy and a tremendous amount of passion for hockey. Oh, and he has a collection of Wayne Gretzky cards that will knock your socks off.

I have been interested in featuring Jeffrey on the blog for awhile now, but as you’ll see, he’s much more than just a collector. I wasn’t sure the best way to share his collecting accomplishments so I decided it would probably be best if we just did a question and answer piece. I hope you enjoy his story as much as I did. Jeffrey is without a doubt one of the best people you’ll meet in the industry and to make things even more exciting, today is his birthday. Happy birthday, Jeffrey!

Question: When did you develop an interest in hockey?

Jeffrey Griffith: “It was during the strike-shortened 1994-95 season, as that was the first year that we got tickets for the then-Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. I enjoy going to Anaheim Ducks games, and the Stanley Cup victory at home in 2007 is the highlight of my experience at games. The best is when they skate against their cross-town rival, the Los Angeles Kings. Up until the trade deadline of the 1995-96 season that meant that I had the opportunity to see Wayne Gretzky play at the then-Arrowhead Pond [now Honda Center] a few times each year.”

Question: When did you decide you wanted to collect hockey?

Jeffrey Griffith: “I started buying retail packs at about the same time I began watching live hockey games. One of the earliest Upper Deck releases that I recall specifically focusing on was the 1996-97 Upper Deck set, in part because it had one of the first cards to feature Wayne Gretzky in a New York Rangers uniform.”

Jeffrey stands in front of some of his prized Gretzky memorabilia

Question: What made you want to collect Wayne Gretzky?

Jeffrey Griffith: “As a gift, I received a signed Wayne Gretzky puck. I knew that I had several cards of him already, so I decided to put them together into a collection. As I began to understand hockey better, I began to recognize how significant Wayne Gretzky has been for the game, especially for the creation of a second team in southern California.”

Question: Were you concerned that with so many collectors chasing cards of “The Great One,” you’d often be facing an uphill battle in getting the cards you were really after?

Jeffrey Griffith: “At the beginning of my collecting career, I was not concerned with this being an uphill battle because I was collecting simply for the sake of collecting. This was before eBay and other internet message boards such as Hobby Insider became an integral part of the hobby, so everyone was not as connected as we are today. However, I quickly became aware of larger collections of Gretzky, but I was more in awe of them rather than being envious. I hoped, however, that one day my collection could be as complete as these other collectors’ collections.”

Question: What are some of your favorite Upper Deck Wayne Gretzky cards in your collection?

Jeffrey Griffith: “One of my favorite cards in my collection is the 1999-00 Ultimate Victory Legendary Fabrics Autograph card, which is the only card to feature swatches of jersey and autographs from both Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr. My other favorites include some of the very first Wayne Gretzky and Gordie Howe cards. Some of my most unique cards include five of the first eight NHL Shield cards from 2002-03 Premier Collection until 2004-05 Ultimate Collection, including the first two Dual Shield cards that Gretzky was featured on in Ultimate Collection.”

These are some of Jeffrey's favorite cards in his impressive Gretzky collection

Question: Obviously in this industry people talk. Did you get recognized when you were picking up the latest Gretzky cards?

Jeffrey Griffith: “After my first article in Beckett Hockey Plus in 2004, I began to get recognized even more at the Toronto Sport Card Expo shows. I thoroughly enjoy talking about my collection, the hockey card industry, and hockey history with people, and I am always available to share, answer, discuss, and/or debate at shows, online forums such as Hobby Insider, and Twitter [@gretzkycards].”

Jeffrey's collection also boasts an impressive number of NHL Shield Gretzky cards

Question: Did you ever have circumstances where people tried to gouge you on prices because they knew how bad you needed certain cards for your set?

Jeffrey Griffith: “There will always be dealers who love their cards a little too much, which often results in exorbitant pricing. I learned very quickly to be content with what I have, so a simple ‘no thank you’ is easy to say when the price is too high for what I want to pay. If that statement corrects the market, great, but if it does not, I do not worry about passing on the card and move on. I find that these types of dealers are somewhat rare, and that most people are very easy to work with, which results in both the collector and dealer being happy with the transaction.”

Question: We know it’s not all bad out there; do you have people that look out for cards for you and try to help?

Jeffrey Griffith: “This is one of the highlights of being in the hockey card community. Often on Hobby Insider, I will get messages from people alerting me of significant cards that are in their area that may not be online. It is great to know that when many people come across a rare Gretzky card, that I come to mind. In order to reciprocate this kindness, I learn what others collect and keep an eye out for them in case I come across one of their needs.”

Question: I believe you’ve crossed paths with Wayne on occasion. What was that like and do you think he realizes how big your collection is?

Jeffrey Griffith: “I have been able to meet Mr. Gretzky on a few occasions. The greatest meeting, however, came on October 3, 2008, when I was able to meet him and present him with a few copies of my book. This event occurred before an Anaheim Ducks and Phoenix Coyotes preseason game, and he was very gracious. When he got to the section of Upper Deck cards, he took extra time looking at each page, and even shared how the process works when he signs cards for the company. He also signed a book for me, as well as signed the cover art for the book, which was drawn by Paul Madden. He seemed truly impressed with not only the amount of cards that I have, but the amount of cards that have been issued throughout the years. The meeting was one of the greatest highlights of the entire process, and I am glad that I had the opportunity to share my collection with Wayne Gretzky himself.”

Jeffrey and the Great One have met a few times

Question: Where did the idea of writing a book come along?

Jeffrey Griffith: “Over time, I began to put together interesting facts regarding specific Wayne Gretzky cards. My dad actually recommended that I expand it further by including information about every Gretzky card issued. With that type of idea and encouragement, I worked over the next couple of years putting together the book in order to make sure that it was as complete as possible.”

Jeffrey authored a book showing off his comprehensive collection of Gretzky cards and sharing information about all the Gretzky cards in existence today

Question: What were the biggest challenges in putting that together?

Jeffrey Griffith: “The biggest challenge of the book was organizing the massive amount of information regarding Wayne Gretzky cards. Since there are more than 6,000 different Gretzky cards issued throughout the years [which includes over 700 different 1/1s], it took considerable time to confirm that every card was included in both the text and the checklists. Of the 305 pages in the book, just over 100 of them are dedicated to some form of a checklist. Narrowing down which cards should be scanned and included in the book was also a challenge, but since only 750 of my over 5,200 different Gretzky cards were depicted, it ensured that only the best-of-the-best were shown. Even though a relative few amount of cards are depicted, every card released is described in the text of the book as well as the checklists.”

Question: How did you feel when it was all over?

Jeffrey Griffith: “Once the book was complete and I had the final product in front of me, it made me realize the enormity of Gretzky’s impact on the hockey card industry. Often as player collectors we only see the holes in our collection, but the book allowed me – and by extension the readers of the book – the chance to be able to look at the full range of Wayne Gretzky cards. Further, the book emphasized the completeness of my collection, as every card pictured in the book is from my personal collection.”

Question: What was the reaction to the book?

Jeffrey Griffith: “The book has been accepted extremely well in the collecting community. I have had several fantastic conversations with fellow collectors regarding the book, and many of the memorable moments of the semi-annual Toronto Sport Card Expo is getting the chance to talk to fellow hockey card collectors. Of course, one of the major highlights of this entire work has been depicted in a past Upper Deck Blog feature. My book has been placed in the Upper Deck Collector’s Corner in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto by Curator and Keeper of the Cup Phil Pritchard. Having my work alongside some of the greatest artifacts in the history of hockey is an unthinkable honor, and the enormity of this honor is phenomenal.”

Jeffrey's book is actually on display in the NHL Hall-of-Fame in Toronto

Question: Why should people go out and get it?

Jeffrey Griffith: “The book offers a very unique opportunity to see several hundred rarely seen Wayne Gretzky cards. Further, the descriptions of each card – as well as the checklists – give hockey card and Gretzky collectors a fantastic resource for their collections. I hope by having the book, collectors will appreciate the breadth of Wayne Gretzky’s cards that have often been at the forefront of the most innovative trends in the hockey card industry.”

Question: What’s next for Jeffrey Griffith?

Jeffrey Griffith: “I will continue to search for the Gretzky cards that are on my wantlist, and enjoy seeing the new Gretzky cards that are being released. Currently, I am exploring the history of the Hockey Hall of Fame through research and acquisition, and it is amazing to see Gretzky’s impact on the game and how he adds to the legacy of the other honored members of hockey. Fellow hockey fans and collectors can follow me on Twitter (@gretzkycards), which I regularly update with thoughts on current hockey events as well as the card collecting hobby.”

Each month Upper Deck spotlights one of its valued collectors to showcase their collection. The great thing about sports collectors is that they are all very different in what they collect, how they collect their items, and what they do once they have them. We first met Alexander Sipos through the Upper Deck Facebook page through normal interactions about where he frequently posted card images or was asking questions about his favorite player, Kevin Durant.

Guten Tag, get to meet our latest Collector of the Month from Germany!

One of the cool things about Alexander is that he is a collector from overseas. It’s not easy for collectors to get trading cards abroad, but one thing we’ve noticed through our Facebook page is just how much international support we have. Of our more than 9,000 fans, over 500 are from Europe, 300 are from the Philippines, over 250 are from Asia and over 175 are from Australia. So while it is not uncommon to be a collector outside of the United States and Canada, it’s not exactly easy. We wanted to hear Alexander’s story about what it is like collecting overseas and here he is to share:

My name is Alexander Sipos and I live in Bensheim, Germany, right next to Frankfurt. I’ve always been a huge basketball fan and I really love watching the NBA. If I’m not working on adding to my collection, you can find me on the court practicing and playing basketball with friends.

“As a passionate basketball fan, it made sense that I would get involved in collecting basketball cards and I started my collection in the mid-‘90s. The Chicago Bulls had a huge following here in Germany and like so many others around the globe, I was a huge Michael Jordan fan and loved the thrill of finding new MJ cards.

I lived in Darmstadt when I was I kid, right next to the U.S. military barracks, in an area called Lincoln Village. I thought it was cool to hang out around the military bases in Darmstadt, Heidelberg and Mannheim because it made it easier to get great soft drinks, junk food and, of course, packs of trading cards. They carried mostly Upper Deck stuff and once I started opening those packs I was hooked.

We would trade with the kids on the basketball court, and although my English wasn’t perfect, I was still able to negotiate some great trades which was really a lot of fun.

I made a lot of great friendships with the American servicemen and have fond memories of celebrating some fun U.S. holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving with my American neighbors.

When the time came where Michael Jordan finally retired, I stopped collecting. Without Jordan I just lost interest in the sport and the hobby so I sold my cards and pursued other interests. Even our television stations stopped broadcasting NBA games after Jordan retired. My passion for basketball was not entirely lost, it lay sleeping inside me. I still played the game, but just didn’t watch as much or collect.

After 9-11 the safety restrictions at American bases got much more strict and we were not allowed to go in those areas anymore. More Americans were transferred to the Middle East during that time and sadly I ended up losing touch with many of my new friends.

During my studies in Frankfurt, I discovered a wonderful website called eBay. As I was browsing around, I started looking after card again. That was in 2005 and it didn’t take too long for me to spend time on that site before I purchased my first box. It was a 2005-06 Upper Deck Hardcourt Basketball box and I remember pulling a Chris Paul autographed rookie card from the last pack. At the time I really didn’t know who he even was because they just didn’t broadcast many of the Hornets games over here, but I was thrilled when I found out he was the #1 pick in the NBA Draft and later became the Rookie of the Year.

That experience helped reignite my passion for the hobby and I spent the next two years buying and selling trading cards again on eBay for fun, but also to make a small profit. As time went by I really wanted to start a personal collection (PC). I liked LeBron James, but his cards were already too expensive at that point and I wanted to focus on rookie year cards. So I was left wondering, who should I collect?

A few weeks before the 2007-08 NBA season tipped off, I recognized a guy named Kevin Durant. I began watching YouTube videos from his outstanding play at the University of Texas. I’ve always loved clutch players with a great shot who play the game like Mike so I made the decision to start collecting Kevin Durant. As I watched him play I really thought he could be one of the best to ever play the game because he just keeps on getting better every season.

A huge talent at Texas, Kevin Durant has taken his game to the next level in the pros.

Upper Deck had always been my favorite card manufacturer and with Durant being an Upper Deck exclusive spokesman, it was safe to say that I spent almost all of my money on Upper Deck cards. I’m grateful to Upper Deck for helping me find my passion not just for collecting again, but for basketball as a whole. Upper Deck came out with some amazing Durant cards in his rookie year and I spent a lot of my free time trying to collect them all.

As Durant emerged as the best prospect, I was so excited I had chosen the right player to collect as many people thought Greg Oden would be the top player in that year’s rookie class. As the season progressed and Durant established himself as a dominant NBA player, I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw how much his rookie cards were selling for. It’s been awesome to see my personal collection of my favorite player appreciate over time.

What's in a name? Alexander did a great job of tracking down these nameplates.

One of Alexander's favorite sets is Chronology. It's easy to see why he misses that set based on these cards.

Check out all these different Durant inserts!

Autos and memorabilia of Durant galore. A very impressive collection to say the least.

Being an international collector is not as easy as making a few clicks on eBay, however. There are quite a few aspects that make collecting abroad a challenge. The biggest issue is high shipping costs and customs clearance. It is more than a little frustrating having to pay about 30% on top of the original price of a card just to get it.

One nice new element that has come up over the last few years is online trading card communities where like-minded collectors can share the hobby online and help each other track down cards. I’ve really enjoyed being a part of the German community dascardboard.eu and HobbyKings.com. If you’re on those message boards and sitting on some Kevin Durant cards, contact me under my usernames Durantula and KD35.

It was a sad day for me when I heard Upper Deck would no longer be producing NBA-licensed cards. I was hopeful that since Panini was a European company that we would see the hobby grow over here with trading cards a little easier to find in stores, but that hasn’t happened. Their Basketball products aren’t even available in Italy. I tried a few of their boxes, but the feeling of opening packs just isn’t the same as when Upper Deck was producing NBA cards. If you don’t have the opportunity to pull a Michael Jordan or LeBron James autograph card, the thrill of opening a pack is greatly reduced. I’ve been an Upper Deck fan since I started collecting in my childhood and that will never change. My favorite brands are SP Authentic (I’m already exited about the new 2010-11 release), UD Black and, of course, NBA Chronology. How can you not love these products?

I intend on continuing to grow my Kevin Durant PC and increase the size of my rookie year collection for years to come. I’m planning on holding on to all my Durant cards as I continue watching him grow and hopefully become the game’s best player. Thank you Upper Deck for being a huge part of my life and for making my PC a very special one. I’m so proud of it!

You should be proud of your collection, Alexander. It’s amazing to see what you’ve been able to amass so far of Kevin Durant. We at Upper Deck love the game of basketball so we’re excited to see what the future holds in terms of potential licensing changes and new opportunities for us. We wish you all the best and we look forward to hearing more about what you add to your collection on Facebook!
