Upper Deck is of course best known for trading cards, but we have a great memorabilia side of the company as well: Upper Deck Authenticated.

The uber-talented point guard Chris Paul did a signing for UDA on Tuesday. He signed the game-used jersey, shorts and sneakers he wore in a game against the Bulls on 1/29/2010. Check this out:

Note all the signed basketballs in the picture as well.

And of course, a personal inscription to mark what he did in that game is always appreciated by collectors:

Innovation is one of the key tenents that made Upper Deck the leader in the trading card industry. Upper Deck pressed the envelope like never before when 2009 Goodwin Champions Baseball was released.  The original Goodwin Champions Baseball sets had some really unique elements to them so Upper Deck paid tribute to that with three cutting edge insert sets that collectors found in packs as exchange cards.

First came the “Thoroughbred Hair Cuts” cards featuring actual hair from the mane of championship horses Funny Cide, Smarty Jones and Afleet Alex. (http://upperdeckblog.com/2009/11/upper-deck%E2%80%99s-triple-crown-bid/)

The next cards to be produced and find their way to the market were the “Landmarks” set which included actual salt from the Dead Sea, sand from Omaha Beach, coal from the Titanic and cable from the Golden Gate Bridge.

09 GC Landmark Omaha Beach Sand

The last insert set has been perhaps the most anticipated of them all, the Goodwin Champions “Entomology” cards.  Many collectors have been calling these the “bug” cards, but most are actually a play of the vintage Goodwin Champions cards that featured butterflies and other subjects.  We thought it would be awesome to be able to bring collectors a real butterfly encased in a trading card along with other strange and unique creatures from around the world.

The cards have taken a long time to produce because each card is basically assembled by hand.  We had to work with a variety of partners on strategies to make these cards happen because quite frankly, nothing like this has been done before.  We finally got in our samples of the cards recently and we were blown away by how great they look.  Pictures do not really do them justice, but we’re excited to share them with you.  Here is the first image we are sharing of the Great Walking Leaf.

Great Walking Leaf Front

Some are the traditional trading card size, while others (like this one) are oversized to fit the specimen encased in the card.  Special holders were also created to get them to customers as well, which you can see the card placed in here.

On the back of the card is information about the specimen along with where they came from.

Great Walking Leaf Back

And more than anything, the cards are extremely thick, actually able to stand on their own.

We look forward to sharing more of these cards with collectors throughout the next couple weeks until they all are in house and ready to ship.  Look for more images at Upper Deck’s Facebook page next week to see images of the Chinese Lantern Fly, the Cryptic Dead Leaf Mantid, the Spicebush Swallowtail, the Man Faced Beetle and more! (http://www.facebook.com/UpperDeck)  If you were one of the lucky collectors to redeem one of these special cards be excited to own something truly unique, but understand this is a new era of trading cards, don’t think you can put these in the spokes of your bike…

We’ve had our share of haircut cards in past Brag Photos, but this one is especially unique:

susanbanthony

For starters, we’re talking about an authenticated strand of hair and signature from the most prominent advocate of the women’s suffrage movement through the 1800s.

Another unique aspect of this item is its size, which is notably bigger than your standard trading card. Her signature was often rather large, and once we found a quality one, we decided to just make the card itself bigger to accommodate it.

This card is of course a part of Upper Deck’s 2009 SP Legendary Cuts Baseball “Hair Cut Signature” series, and we’ve featured similar 1-of-1 gems here before (like Richard Nixon and John Adams). Talk about a big pull: these make a great historical centerpiece for any collection, and go for thousands of dollars on the secondary market.

Sad to say, you’ll have to pass on pulling this Susan B. Anthony card: it was recently completed and will be sent to the lucky collector who pulled it this week. That individual will get to brag next, though there’s always plenty of gems like these out there in Upper Deck packs, waiting to be claimed.

We started with some art, moved on to a breaking through piece, and we’ll finish our UDA Jordan series with some serious sneakers.

When I was a kid, having Air Jordans or Pump sneakers was practically a requirement if you played basketball. These however, are a completely different item.

Signed by the man himself, limited to 23, and authenticated. Click here to check it out! This is definitely a high-end item, for ballers only (see what I did there?)

Since last week’s Jordan Art piece got such a good response, I figured I’d share another prime UDA Jordan piece with you. I doubt the photos can do this one justice after seeing it in person, but I’ll try.

jordanball2

This is an autographed “Breaking Through” piece featuring Michael Jordan. The ball you see here actually busts through the frame.

And a better look at the autograph while I’m at it.

You may have seen similar pieces from UDA in the past, but this one seriously stands out. It’s big, the design is sleek, and it really has a lifelike feel that dominates a room.

If you’re a big fan of the Bulls, Jordan or basketball in general, it’s definitely a great centerpiece for your home. Click here to check it out in the online store!
