It’s another big day in Toronto at the 2011 NHLPA Rookie Showcase! Check out these Day 2 images as the rookies hit the red carpet to talk to the media, help Upper Deck shoot some hilarious videos, and more! Stay tuned for more images and updates as this exciting event continues!

NEXT QUESTION: Aaron Palushaj of the Montreal Canadiens looks very relaxed in front of the camera.

I'M NUMBER ONE: Perhaps Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was talking to this reporter about what it will be like to join the young talent in Edmonton including Jordan Eberle and fellow number one pick Taylor Hall.

GOING INCOGNITO: Who's that guy over there with no jersey? It's Carl Klingberg of the Winnipeg Jets keeping it casual on the red carpet.

MR. POPULAR: Gabriel Landeskog of the Colorado Avalanche seems to attract a lot of media attention!

HOMETOWN HEROES: Jussi Rynnas and Jake Gardiner didn't have to travel far for this event, it was held right in their new team's home city of Toronto.

WHAT'S SO FUNNY GUYS?: Gabriel Landeskog and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins can't help but laugh it up as they watch fellow rookie Jonathan Huberdeau film a scene for an Upper Deck video. What is so funny you might ask? You will just have to wait for the video!

SMILE FOR THE CAMERA: Aaron Palushaj and Blake Geoffrion listen to the director give them some advice while they film a video for Upper Deck.

STRIKE A POSE: Aaron Palushaj poses for some Upper Deck photos. Will this shot of him blowing a bubble gum bubble make it onto an Upper Deck trading card? Wait and see!

I WANT ONE: Marcus Kruger, Jussi Rynnas, and Jake Gardiner check out an Upper Deck Evolution video trading card. Maybe one day they'll have their own Evolution cards!

With investors looking for other options on where to put some of their nest egg, we had been looking at the benefits of investing a small portion of that capital into the sports collectibles market. Yesterday I shared the athletes who you should be investing in today, but we didn’t discuss the athletes you should steer clear of. Now, if someone offers you a good deal on a Frank Tanana autograph baseball, I would definitely tell you that is not the best investment (no offense Frank). But this is not about obscure or local players. We are talking about the big names who you would not want to purchase today because there is too much hype around them or because there are just better times to buy. If you have authentic autographs of these players in your collection right now, you are looking good, but now is certainly not the time to buy their collectibles.

Here are the top athletes I believe fans should look to avoid collecting autographed sports memorabilia of right now:

#10 – Michael Vick – Long story short, you missed your window. Had you been swooping up signatures of Mike Vick for next to nothing while he was incarcerated, you would be laughing all the way to the bank today. Very few felt he would be able to come back and perform as well as he has and that swing has made it very difficult to get close to his autographed items at a rational price. With so much anticipation around the Eagles “dream team” this season, there are no deals to be had on his collectibles right now.

Mike Vick has certainly made an amazing comeback in Philadelphia and now his collectibles are just a little too hot to get a good deal on.

#9 – Dirk Nowitzki – I love Dirk Nowitzki, but I believe interest in his signed collectibles will be fleeting. I don’t think the Mavericks will return as NBA champs in the near future and I think the love affair fans are having with Dirk will end as the Mavs struggle to repeat. There is another element of Dirk’s signed collectibles that I really dislike and that is his signature. It is not uncommon for athletes to change their signatures, but when it turns into something less than what it was, I think that is a problem. Check out how cool Dirk’s signature used to be:

Early in his career Dirk had a really unique signature.

And now look at it today:

Today his signature basically looks like a "DN."

He is a great player and will likely be a Hall-of-Famer, but if I were collecting his memorabilia, I would chase the authentic items from his early years when his signature was more compelling.

#8 – Mariano Rivera – If you already have authentic signed memorabilia of Mariano Rivera in your collection you are golden, but if you are looking to acquire it, hold the boat! He will become the MLB all-time save leader this season or next and when that happens, interest will just be too high. The right time to buy collectibles of Yankee players is after they are coming off a bad season well after the holidays, but before spring training. February is always a great month to get good value on MLB collectibles because you have the Super Bowl, the NHL All-Star Game and the NBA All-Star Game taking place around that time so people are not really thinking about purchasing baseball collectibles. Strike when demand is low!

Rivera is on the cusp of breaking Trevor Hoffman's save record so deman on his items is just too high right now.

#7 – Winnipeg Jets – I was just laughing to myself yesterday thinking about how much Winnipeg Jets apparel has been sold in the last couple weeks. I did so because I saw a picture of a fan who won a special painting from Upper Deck at his local hobby shop and right next to him was a fan who was rocking his new Winnipeg Jets shirt. There is HUGE interest in the Jets right now so this is not the time to find a good deal on an autograph item from a Winnipeg Jets legend like Dale Hawerchuk. It is highly unlikely they are going to come out and win the Stanley Cup so just let interest die down a bit and look to pick up some items from this inaugural season later on this year after things have calmed down a bit.

Although the new logo was just revealed a couple weeks ago, I'm guessing about 80% of the population of Winnipeg now own a new hat or shirt displaying it. They are CRAZY for the return of the NHL up there.

#6 – Tim Tebow – Poor Tim Tebow. He is just a fantastic guy off the field and likely one of the greatest college quarterbacks in history, but he is really struggling to find his game in the NFL. It is unlikely he will be with the Broncos forever and by the time his career is over he will likely have played with quite a few teams. The only really safe purchase for Tebow signed collectibles right now are from his college years as a member of the Florida Gators. The only problem is that there is a lot of it.

It is uncertain what the future holds for Tim Tebow, but it certainly doesn't look good for him in Denver.

#5 – Tom Brady – I’m not afraid to admit that I have a man crush on Tom Brady. In my line of work I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a lot of athletes, but Tom was something else all together. He just exuded cool. And what he has accomplished already in his career has him in the conversation as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. There is so much hype around him however that it is hard to get an autographed item from him at a rational cost. People mob the guy for autographs wherever he goes. Tom is amazing for sure, but I wouldn’t recommend picking up any of his collectibles at this time.

Fans will do just about anything to get a signature from Tom Brady right now.

#4 – Stephen Strasburg – Investing in pitchers is always tricky. Unless it is an icon like Nolan Ryan, there just is not a lot of demand for their memorabilia. The simple fact is that Americans love position players over pitchers when it comes to collectibles. When we look at investing in sports collectibles, we want to acquire items that will have demand should we want to sell them and that will have low risk in terms of potentially depreciating. Pitchers have risk tied to them. And more than that, unproven pitchers with a lot of hype around them have tremendous risk tied to them. I hope Strasburg comes back from surgery and has an amazing career as we loved watching him when he was with the San Diego State Aztecs. He is not worth the risk however in terms of investing in his collectibles at this time.

Strasburg had huge hype around him even before he hit the majors.

#3 – Aaron Rodgers – The Green Bay Packers led by Aaron Rodgers truly had a season to remember last year. If you already have signed memorabilia of Aaron Rodgers in your collection, you are in a good place as they are a safe investment now that he has won a Super Bowl. In terms of picking them up now, I just do not feel the time is right given the fact there is still a lot of interest in him among the Cheesehead nation. If you want to pick them up, wait as he is still a little too hot right now.

If you have Rodgers collectibles in your collection already, good job! If you don't, you'll want to hold off a bit until interest cools down.

#2 – Derek Jeter – We’ve talked about when the right time to buy Yankees and MLB items with Rivera and how the timing is not right to purchase their collectibles now. Nobody on that list is hotter than Derek Jeter after he became a member of the 3,000 Hit-Club. There is a lot of demand for his collectibles right now and I can tell you without reservation that it is absolutely not the right time to buy as there are no deals to be had on Jeter. If you purchased when there was uncertainty about his future in New York and people were panicking, you likely got a good deal.

After capturing his 3,000th hit this season, you don't stand a chance at capturing an autograph of Jeter at a good price right now.

#1 – Peyton Manning – There are a lot of great guys on my list of players to avoid and I honestly feel bad putting Peyton as the #1 player to avoid collectible memorabilia of right now. It is a similar situation to Brady and Rodgers where there is just too much interest in these players right now. What’s more, I think there is a lot of wear on Peyton’s tires and as sad as it is to admit, he is in the twilight of his career. If you already have some of his signed items that you picked up before his Super Bowl victory, you are looking good. But hold off on purchasing any new Peyton Manning signed memorabilia until interest dies down in one of the games greatest players.

If you already have memorabilia of Peyton in your collection, you are looking good. Hold off on buying new items at this time however.

Do you agree? Disagree? Which players do you think make the best investment right now? Who would you avoid?

And if you are ready to start investing in sports memorabilia today, Upper Deck Authenticated has a special offer for you. Use the coupon code “INVEST” at checkout on orders* placed at www.upperdeckstore.com and you will receive FREE shipping on your order. The stock market has gone crazy recently with wild swings that have caused me to rethink how I invest. With the future not looking so bright, most investors agree that it makes sense to diversify your portfolio and find stable commodities to acquire. While investing in autographed sports memorabilia doesn’t come without risk, I believe it is a great way to at least stash some capital in a relatively safe category, especially if you follow the five rules I highlighted recently on how to purchase the right sports memorabilia at the right time.

Even the most savvy stock brokers have been left scratching their heads trying to figure out the markets today.

Now certainly I am not advocating you liquidate your 401(k) and dump everything you have into Kobe Bryant autographed shoes. However, if you are a sports fan it does make a lot of sense to allocate small portion of your nest egg to collectibles that you will enjoy seeing on a daily basis, that also have the potential to appreciate. And while any investment has a lot to do with buying and selling at the right times, as a sports fan myself, I would rather buy and sell items I love like autographed sports memorabilia over commodities like soy beans and pork bellies. If you would rather look at a signed Michael Jordan framed jersey in your office more than stock certificates, then we are on the same page.

If you disagree, then I challenge you to look at your investments as of late. Spend five minutes going over your 401(k). It is likely you have lost a substantial amount of your retirement savings over the last few weeks through markets that are highly unstable. I recently went through what was happening in my retirement savings and almost got ill.

If you are on board with putting a small portion of your retirement portfolio in sports collectibles, it’s time to talk about which players might represent a good investment and which players might not. It goes without saying that there are no sure things when investing in sports collectibles, it is an investment with risk like any other. Like any other investment however, there are some great opportunities that exist where you can use your knowledge of sports to make a sound investment.

With so many investment options available to consumers, why not invest in something you are passionate about like authentic autographed sports memorabilia?

I believe fans should look to acquire or avoid is based on timing, as if you were looking to make a purchase today. If we were buying sports memorabilia today, we would want to avoid items in high demand because the sports is in season like baseball collectibles. There is also a lot of interest in Football with the season getting ready to kick off. Basketball however is in the midst of an ugly lockout so people holding inventory on those items are likely panicking. From that panic comes opportunity for you to get great value and make a sound investment.

Before we dive into the players on my lists, I cannot express to you enough that if you do decide to invest in your passion, you absolutely need to make sure you are purchasing authentic autographed memorabilia. If you get a great deal on an item with a phony signature, you might as well have invested in Enron. Make a sound investment by purchasing an authentic item, even if it costs a little more. Make sure that any item you are acquiring comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from a reputable company where they witness the athletes signing and keep record of those sessions for customers. When it comes to authenticity, nobody does it better than Upper Deck Authenticated and I’m not just saying that because I work for the company. UDA set the standard for authentic signed sports collectibles and has helped to greatly clean up the industry.

That said, here are the top ten players I believe fans should look to acquire authentic autographed memorabilia of today:

#10 – Albert Pujols – I know I just said to be careful with baseball right now, but Albert Pujols is just one of the most amazing baseball players we have ever seen. Not only is he awesome on the field, he seems like an even better guy off the field as a great family man who spends much of his free time helping in the community. There is some uncertainty about what his future holds in St. Louis and I believe that gives way to some opportunity. Try to grab something of Albert at a decent price tied to a specific moment from Albert’s career or his rookie season. Be careful of memorabilia items that are just generic St. Louis Cardinals pieces for right now because if he does move teams, you will see values on those drop for a bit.

Until his future with the Cardinals is clear, purchase signed items of Albert tied to a special moment or with an inscription like this one.

#9 – Kevin Durant – How impressive was Kevin Durant early in his career? He is definitely a solid player that is doing all the right things so far in his career. Shop around a bit to find a quality signature of his as there are some that look a little more rushed in the market. The only problem is that are still not many good deals on his memorabilia despite the NBA lock out because he is still making news. He is playing a lot in high visibility tournaments that are getting him headline coverage on ESPN keeping him top of mind with collectors and making value purchases on him harder to find. He is someone you want to collect now, but you just have to wait for him to quiet down a bit.

While his signature leaves a little something to be desired, autographs of Durant should be considered a good investment. Unfortunately there are not many good deals to be found even during the NBA lock out because he is still making headlines.

#8 – Tiger Woods – What can you say about Tiger Woods that hasn’t already been said? It has been really disappointing to see the direction things have gone for him, especially on the course where he is struggling with every start. With his struggles however, comes great opportunity. I believe he will be back and eventually break Jack Nicklaus’ record, but even if he doesn’t, he has provided us with some amazing moments and that is what I would recommend you invest in now. Tie the purchase of Tiger Woods autographed memorabilia to it to a memorable moment. There are plenty of unique items out there for Tiger that showcase moments that sports fans will never forget.

Remember the 2005 Masters where Tiger made that chip on 16? Capturing collectibles of Tiger from those magic moments should be safe investments as fans will remember them forever.

#7 – Bobby Orr – There was a lot of hoopla and fanfare about the Boston Bruins winning the Stanley Cup a few months back, but the good news is that things have settled down a bit there. There is no telling if they will be back to their winning ways this season, but the future looks bright for the franchise. And when you have a great franchise, you have a passionate base of collectors. There is the opportunity now to snatch up some collectibles of one of the best know Bruins of all-time in Bobby Orr at a rationale price before the season starts up again and interest returns in hockey collectibles. Since his career is over and his legacy secured, his authentic signed items represent a very safe investment.

Signed collectibles of Bobby Orr will always have a market with puck fanatics.

#6 – Landon Donovan – You are going to be hard-pressed to find an American athlete who is as respected internationally as much as Landon Donovan. He is beloved and has become a wonderful spokesman for the sport of soccer. With the popularity of soccer gaining and Landon positioned to be a global icon for the foreseeable future, his collectibles represent another great investment for fans.

Landon Donovan is one of the most well-known American athletes in the world and his legend will likely continue to grow.

#5 – Muhammad Ali – Speaking of icons, you don’t get much bigger than Muhammad Ali, who is one of the most recognizable athletes in the world today. As he gets older, it’s sad to think of how we’ll get by without a wonderful humanitarian like Muhammad Ali in the world. There is no doubt fans will always treasure signed collectibles of “The Champ” as he represents all that is good about sports.

"I am the greatest. I said that even before I knew I was." - Muhammad Ali

#4 – Michael Jordan – Upper Deck Authenticated does a great job of protecting the signatures of Jordan by limiting the amount of signings he does each year. Even in the midst of a NBA lockout, there are not a lot of deals to be found for Michael Jordan as supply is low and demand remains high. A signed collectible of Jordan is absolutely a must in your sports investment portfolio however because it is such a safe investment. Even though the price of his collectibles may be a little high, if you are going to be in this game, you’ll want a signed item from the man widely seen as the greatest basketball player of all-time.

The new Michael Jordan Tegata piece from Upper Deck Authenticated comes not only with a signature from MJ, but his palm print as well!

#3 – Ken Griffey Jr. – I know I said to steer clear of baseball collectibles right now, but it seems like Ken Griffey Jr. has just fallen off that map and that is a great thing for those looking to invest in his collectibles. His career statistics are absolutely amazing and the great thing is that he is one of the very few baseball players who you don’t hear brought up in the whole steroid scandal situation. He will most certainly be a first ballot Hall-of-Famer so grab his signed items know at a low price and pat yourself on the back when he is enshrined in Cooperstown.

"The Kid" is all grown up now. Get his signed collectibles now before Ken Griffey Jr. is inducted in the Baseball Hall-of-Fame.

#2 – Kobe Bryant – Upper Deck Authenticated enjoyed a great relationship with Kobe Bryant for several fantastic seasons where he won multiple NBA championships with the Los Angeles Lakers. Take a look at what Kobe had to say about the partnership with Upper Deck:

Although he has faced his ups and downs, he has come back and reassumed his position as one of the best players in the game. His popularity can be seen around the world. With the NBA lockout there is the opportunity to get a good deal on some of his signed items, UNLESS he goes and plays abroad where interest may soar. His latest headlines Kobe has been making however are not exactly positive which is okay, as I think that story is a bit ridiculous and will be forgotten before too long. Use this as an opportunity to get a good deal from a collector who was scared off by the story.

#1 – LeBron James – LeBron has caught all sorts of heat (pun intended) for leaving Cleveland for the warm shores of South Beach. And there has been a lot of negativity around him for not winning it all last season even though he helped lead the Miami Heat to the NBA Finals. There is no doubt that LeBron James is going to win the NBA Championship and he will likely do it more than once. This is definitely the low point of his career and provides fans with a tremendous opportunity to get his collectibles at a great price, and then laugh all the way to the bank in a few years as he retires as one of the game’s greatest players with titles in tow. Just be careful with some of the Cleveland collectibles unless they are from a key moment or his rookie season as it may take a little longer for those pieces to recover.

King James will get his titles in time. Capture his collectibles now at a good price.

There is no time like now to get started with your new investment strategy. Come up with your own list of who you want to invest in and get buyoff from your significant other on it. You’re not buying “stuff,” you’re investing. To help you get started, I’ve been able to get clearance to offer up a few items from players on my list at a special discount to our fans. Check out these deals Upper Deck Authenticated is offering direct to consumer by clicking here. Take some time to explore other websites, auctions and shops as well to find a deal on a piece that has potential to appreciate.

Make sure to visit the UD Blog tomorrow where I share my top ten list of athletes to avoid. Which players do you think will be on that list?

One of my favorite perks of working in the sports industry is getting to go to sporting events as part of the job. Any event is fun but it’s even better when you can go for free! A couple weeks ago I had the privilege of heading north from Upper Deck headquarters in Carlsbad, California to a Los Angeles Galaxy soccer game at the Home Depot Center in Carson. It was a big day for Upper Deck as we had a large presence at this particular game. It was Upper Deck Team Pack Giveaway night, and the Galaxy were handing out special packs of 2011 Upper Deck MLS Soccer cards featuring Galaxy players including Donovan Ricketts, Sean Franklin, and Landon Donovan. The packs even included some special custom cards. Since 2011 UD Soccer released before Juan Pablo Angel moved to the Galaxy, fans received a new updated card card of Angel that was not available in boxes featuring him in his Galaxy gear.

The beautiful Home Depot Center in Carson, California a few hours before Upper Deck Team Pack Giveaway Night got underway!

Some of you might be wondering where’s David Beckham in this set? Well, he got a card as well, but it was a special bonus card available only in the Galaxy team store. For one night only fans could purchase any Upper Deck product and receive a bonus card of Beckham to complete their Galaxy team set. This is a unique and fun promotion I’ve had the pleasure of working on with a number of teams in multiple sports. Hockey fans will remember our NHL Team Pack Giveaway from this past season which will be returning for the 2011-2012 season. We have branched out into MLS recently with similar promotions for the Galaxy and D.C. United, as well as upcoming promotions with the Philadelphia Union, New York Red Bulls, and New England Revolution. We have found this to be a great way to get cards in the hands of the most passionate fans while also sharing a special card or two not available anywhere else. If your local MLS team doesn’t have this promotion on the schedule, be sure to contact them and let them know YOU want to see the Upper Deck Team Pack Giveaway in your MLS city!

The Galaxy promotion was taken to the next level for a few lucky fans. Ten thousand packs were handed out at the game, but only 100 had a special instant winner sticker on them. Lucky fans who pulled those packs received an amazing surprise with a special meet and greet event Upper Deck sponsored with Landon Donovan right after the game! Fans who participated in the event were extremely excited to see trading cards come to life through this special opportunity.

A few lucky fans got a huge surprise when they looked at their Upper Deck packs and realized they would be meeting Landon Donovan after the game!

Those who didn’t get an instant winner sticker still had a chance to meet Landon. My main job at the game was working the Upper Deck booth where we were displaying and selling some of our Landon Donovan autographed memorabilia from Upper Deck Authenticated. The booth featured balls, jerseys, and prints signed by Landon and authenticated by the Upper Deck 5-Step Process featuring a hologram serial number and certificate of authenticity. In addition to the special game night discounts on the items, anyone who bought an autographed piece at the game automatically got to join in the meet and greet with Landon after the game. It was an amazing deal that multiple fans took advantage of.

Fans attending the game could buy official Landon Donovan Autographed Memorabilia from Upper Deck Authenticated from yours truly!

That wasn’t all we had in store for fans in attendance as we also got them in the game by producing special personalized Upper Deck cards of them. After the fun at the UD booth I managed to check out the last few minutes of the game where the Galaxy battled with FC Dallas. Dallas scored first, but after three consecutive goals the Galaxy turned the deficit into a resounding victory. After that it was off to a suite at the Home Depot Center where winners were gathering to meet Landon. Landon had to clean up and fulfill his other postgame duties so we filled the time by handing out free posters to the kids waiting in line. These special posters were blown up replicas of Landon’s 2011 Upper Deck Soccer card and many of the kids had them signed by Landon, taking home a memorable collectible from the event.

After all the fans had a chance to meet Landon, I was able to get some face time with the soccer legend and get a picture with him. This was my second opportunity to meet Landon, and he was as friendly as ever despite already having played a full game and meeting over 100 other fans. I have that photo on display at my desk at Upper Deck headquarters as a reminder of this awesome experience.

A very friendly Landon Donovan took time to sign an item and snap a photo with all his loyal fans after the game.

It was a busy day, but a lot of fun as well as we brought fans closer to the game. I’m a big soccer fan, but this was my first time at a professional game and getting some time with Landon on top of that made it even more special. If you couldn’t make it you can still get in on the action and get your own Landon Donovan autographed item. You can find autographs and game-used memorabilia cards of Landon in 2011 Upper Deck Soccer packs and check out Upper Deck Authenticated’s full line of signed collectibles by clicking here. I love my Landon Donovan autograph and I know you will love yours too!
