It was just a year ago when I caught World Cup Soccer fever and I was rooting Team USA on with every fiber of my being. Yeah, I even bought a Vuvuzela. It was so much fun and people everywhere were going nuts for it. I’d go to a sports bar at 8:00AM and it was packed with patriots looking to root Team USA on. And then that Ghana game came along and crushed the hopes and dreams of every American who ever kicked a soccer ball. It was devastating losing to them and to get booted from the tournament.
I got caught up in it again when the USA played Mexico a couple weeks back at the Rose Bowl and while I was disappointed with the outcome, I feel good about what Team USA can do in the future. I started to pay a little attention to the Women’s World Cup, but I didn’t realize just how good Team USA was. Certainly they couldn’t be as good as the spectacular group of women who donned the stars & stripes leading America to soccer glory several years ago. Certainly there cannot be another Mia Hamm, Julie Foudy or Brandi Chastain to ignite a nation’s passion for this sport, can there? The answer is YES!!!
All it takes is a special moment to help galvanize fans throughout America, and yesterday we had that. Down by one goal late in the game against Brazil, Team USA pulled out an amazing comeback. The ladies scored late on a fabulous pass from Megan Rapinoe to Abby Wambach and eventually won the game on penalty kicks. Check this out!

Team USA is just two wins away from winning the World Cup. They face France on Wednesday and then the winner of Japan vs. Sweden this weekend. Are there more special moments to come or are we “Ghana” have another heat crushing disappointment? I’m liking how the ladies are looking and I really like Team USA’s chance to take it all. The team here at Upper Deck feels the same way, which is probably why we included so many stars of the Women’s World Cup in 2011 Upper Deck Soccer.
That’s right, you can catch stars like Hope Solo, Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach and many other of Team USA’s stars right in packs of 2011 Upper Deck Soccer.
You can also find international women’s stars like Marta from Brazil who had two goals against the U.S. yesterday. Click here to pick up your box today! And be sure to check out our other BIG soccer promotion here.
But enough with the shameless plugs, let’s get back to celebrating! We are so thrilled about Team USA’s performance and the amazing goal by Abby Wambach that we are going to give away some very rare promotional cards we created of Abby from earlier this season. We are also going to give away a box of 2011 Upper Deck Soccer where you can pull cards of many of these top female soccer stars! All you have to do is post an image to the Facebook page of the USA Women’s National Soccer Team located here of an Upper Deck Soccer card of your favorite USA Women’s Soccer player with a comment to help inspire the team against France!
We will reach out to 20 (Abby Wambach’s jersey number) random fans who posted pictures on that page on Thursday afternoon and send them one of these special Abby Wambach cards. One of the fans will also receive a full hobby box of 2011 Upper Deck Soccer! Let the ladies hear you America! Cheer them on and win!!!
