As a serious sports fan, nothing disappoints me more than a professional athlete showing poor judgment. I don’t know about anyone else, but if someone offered me the chance to be rich and famous with the only requirements being play sports and don’t do anything stupid, I would probably end up locking myself in my house between games just so I didn’t make a mistake and mess up what a good deal I had going for me!

With football season well underway, fans are being presented with a new crop of rising superstars. So which players among these young NFL stars represent the combination of right attitude and athletic prowess that could make them the chosen few, the ones who we will be remembered decades from now as the best of the best both on and off the field? Here are my three favorite rookies who I predict we will look back on as the best of the best from the year’s draft class; not just as athletes, but as ambassadors of what is good in sports:

By all appearances, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow looks to be a player kids can look up to.

Tim Tebow, quarterback, Denver Broncos: His off-the-field behavior doesn’t need to be scrutinized (he’s squeaky clean). Tebow, however, does possess ability on the field that can allow him to be more than an off-the-field sideshow. While not blessed with traditional passing mechanics and a playing style that is in some dreaded no man’s land between a pocket and a scrambling quarterback, many believe Tebow has the intangibles that will allow him to make good decisions under pressure. There’s no reason why Tebow can’t turn into a good game manager who knows exactly the right time for a pitch, shovel pass, or quick scramble that can turn out to be a game-changer.

San Diego rookie running back Ryan Mathews is a former Fresno State standout.

Ryan Mathews, running back, San Diego Chargers: Mathews is the real deal. He’s quick but stocky, built to take a hit and keep on running. He has the potential to become the kind of grinder that die-hard fans love; a guy who gets nicked up now and then buts keeps on going. He already showed this potential when he was taken out with an ankle injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Expected to be out for the rest of the game, he came charging back onto the field. Only the coaches’ collective hesitation with their No. 1 draft pick kept him from getting back out there. Not only that, he comes from humble beginnings as his mother delivered him at a very young age and had to raise him as a single parent. No doubt his humble upbringing will keep him grounded and his desire strong.

A former Golden Domer, Golden Tate is now running his routes for the Seattle Seahawks.

Golden Tate, wide receiver, Seattle Seahawks: When a guy’s greatest offense is trying to score a tasty doughnut at three in the morning, you know he’s is only out for some good clean fun. Tate has attended private school all the way up to his collegiate career at Notre Dame, so you know he was focused on sports and academics more than he was parties. Not only did he have a great football career at Notre Dame, but his talents on the baseball diamond prompted him to be drafted multiple times by MLB. Guys like Tate who could have had legitimate pro careers in different sports are rare, and he’s already getting looks as a return man and wide receiver in Seattle. He may not be an athletic freak like Calvin Johnson, but he has the ability to be sneaky good, and a career as a slot receiver/return specialist seems like a nice niche for him.

All of these guys have the potential to post solid careers in the NFL. However their true appeal is that they seem likely to stay away from the dark side of being a famous professional athlete, and these days that counts for a lot. I feel like when I collect cards, I like to own cards of guys who have the potential to have great careers, but also will not betray me and make me embarrassed to own a bunch of cards of a guy who isn’t exactly a great human being. Hopefully there will be more and more guys like these coming up in the future; sports could use a few more good guys if you ask me!

Each month Upper Deck spotlights one of its valued collectors to showcase their collection. The great thing about sports collectors is that they are all very different in what they collect, how they collect their items and what they do once they have them. I first came in regular contact with Tim Danielson when Upper Deck announced the Yankee Stadium Legacy (YSL) program in 2008. The 6,600-plus insert card set was the largest baseball card set ever produced and he set a goal to complete it. What set Danielson apart from the thousands of other collectors who wanted to put the set together was that he didn’t want to put it together for himself.

Tim has been instrumental in leading a charge to collect UD's entire Yankee Stadium Legacy set to donate to charity.

Tim’s goal was to complete the set by receiving donations of the Upper Deck YSL cards through an online trading community known as “The Bench.” For two years now Tim and members of The Bench have been working dutifully to assemble the mammoth set in the hopes of selling the completed set and donating the proceeds to “The V Foundation,” a non-profit organization dedicated to curing cancer. Tim’s passion and drive have served him well on this quest and I am very excited for the day when they get the final card to complete their mission.

Now when Tim isn’t chasing down leads for collectors who may have some extra Upper Deck YSL cards, he uses cards for another reason: to strengthen the bond with his children. Tim and his wife Jessica have a daughter (Jordan) and a son (Jayden), but he and his wife made the decision to adopt a child as well. Earlier this year they adopted a son (Gabe) from China and this is Tim’s story.

After my wife and I made the decision to adopt a child, our path led us to China and as a family we were all very excited about this great opportunity. I love that my wife and daughter have just been soaking up every bit of information on China they can. My daughter can probably teach a college level class on Chinese history based on all the time she has spent researching where her new sibling came from. For me, however, it’s a little hard to feel “connected” to China just through research. As a passionate trading card collector, I thought it might be fun to get a better understanding of China through sports cards. And wouldn’t you know it has not only been a lot of fun for me, but for the whole family.

My family really enjoys watching baseball games together, especially the Detroit Tigers. I have a large collection of trading cards and my kids have always enjoyed opening, sorting and having fun with the cards along with Dad. My son Jayden actually puts his Tigers and Brewers cards onto “teams” and has them play make-believe games. But don’t tell him they are make-believe as to him it is as real as what we see on television.

Attempting to collect cards of Chinese players seemed like a fun way for me and the kids to learn more about our new son’s birth country, but to also help him feel a connection to us through a hobby we all very much enjoy. I also felt it would be a fun way to start him along with his very own baseball card collection.

Tim has been enjoying collecting the Upper Deck World Baseball Classic Team China cards with his son Gabe.

In 2006 and 2009 the World Baseball Classic (WBC) tournament brought together a great collection of superstars from around the globe. Playing for country instead of a major league team helped create a sense of National Pride for the fans who watched their teams compete to prove they were the best in the world. Upper Deck produced insert cards of players from all 16 teams in the WBC back in 2006 and these were a great place to start collecting baseball cards of Chinese-born players for Gabe. They are easy to identify with the Chinese flag on the front and they also have some interesting highlights on the card backs that talk about their history with the Chinese team.

Yao has always been a great ambassador for the game. He is even helping to bring Tim's family closer together.

Just this past year four Chinese-born baseball players were signed by MLB teams and I’m sure more will join the majors soon. But it’s not just about baseball for Gabe’s collection. We’ve also started to pick up basketball cards of Yao Ming. We even have a cool event-worn swatch card of actor Jackie Chan! In addition to sharing the joys of this hobby to future generations, it is an awesome feeling to see Gabe’s face light up when he sees a card of a player from China! To us trading cards have become much more than just a pack of cardboard, rather a way to connect, relate and strengthen our family. And for that I am forever grateful.

Living proof that a family that collects together, stays together.

Tim is looking to continue growing the bond with all of his kids by collecting trading cards with them. If you happen to have any cards of the Tigers, Brewers, Chinese players or those last elusive Upper Deck Yankee Stadium Legacy cards, please e-mail Tim at talliasen@charter.net as he would love to discuss trades. Hockey has always been “my” sport. Whether it’s watching it, playing it, talking about it, or one of my favorite pastimes, collecting hockey cards! Ever since the ripe age of four, I’ve played hockey. Starting with the Tim Horton’s “Timbit” league and eventually moving on to some more serious hockey. Why hockey? Well to tell you the truth, I don’t really know. It must be the on-ice passion. I don’t think there are many sports out there with the genuine excitement I feel when I’m at a hockey game or even watching a game with friends and family. I really wish this was something everyone could feel at least once in their lives. It’s just so empowering. Everybody – regardless of age, religion, race or opinion – rejoicing to watch some good ol’ hockey!

Ryan Smith's 36 goals and 30 assists for Edmonton in 2005-06 were enough to inspire the author to pursue hockey.

I’m a 15-year-old from Winnipeg and I’ve always collected memorabilia. I was an autograph hound starting at a young age when the local Manitoba Moose of the AHL would hold autograph sessions. I suppose this is what eventually ignited my love for collecting as well! I’ve always found it so neat to meet the players off the ice. Realizing that they are real people too and that the sport is their job is really inspiring. Somewhere during those formative years, I found my favorite team: the Edmonton Oilers! My first year of really following hockey would have been the 2005-06 NHL season. I had cheered on the Oilers since the beginning of the year. I modeled my own play after the team’s gritty winger, Ryan Smyth. When Edmonton lost Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals to Carolina that season it marked the saddest moment of my young life. Nothing before that had ever made me cry so hard. It seemed as though everything came crashing down.

Opening a pack of 2007-08 Fleer Ultra Hockey cards was the catalyst to kick-start the author's passion for the hobby.

I still remember the first pack of hockey cards I ever opened. Strangely enough, I really didn’t find out about the hobby until the 2007-08 NHL season. The first pack I opened was a retail pack of 2007-08 Fleer Ultra. I was hoping to get a rookie card of my still favorite player, Sam Gagner. Unfortunately, I didn’t pull that redemption. However, I did notice that the pack was a little thick! I opened it up and lo and behold, I had my first ever jersey card! Of course now that I’m into the hobby a lot more, I am not nearly as excited as I was at that time. The card was of Marc Denis. I didn’t care that he wasn’t the best player out there, but I thought it was so cool that the card featured a piece of his authentic game-worn jersey! I got my first full hobby box that year for my birthday. Of course, I chose a box of 2007-08 Fleer Ultra! Ever since then, I’ve been hooked. I currently trade online under the name of “Gagner4God.”

This hobby has turned into a really great pursuit for me as it’s always nice to get home after a hard day at school and see a yellow package in the mail for me! I hope that I can still enjoy this hobby for another 20 years and maybe even pass it onto my children. It really is a great way to make friends as I’ve made countless acquaintances through my experience of trading online. I encourage anyone who enjoys hockey as much as I do to get into the card-collecting hobby.

Brag Photo: 2009-10 NHL The Cup

Posted by: Chris Carlin | Comments (0)

At Upper Deck, we’ve experienced a lot of success with producing some of the most-sought-after, high-end trading card products in the industry. When it comes to NHL trading cards, the release that every collector gets fired up about each year is The Cup. With each pack containing rare autographed memorabilia rookie cards, autograph cards of NHL stars and the opportunity to find even more unique cards, The Cup is consistently the most anticipated release of the year for Upper Deck.

This high-end product typically retails for anywhere from $325 to $425 per pack based on supply so when collectors are spending that much on a product, it is important for Upper Deck to deliver value and excitement in every pack. To do so, we package the product in a completely different way than other releases. Instead of using a mechanized process to sort and package the cards, Upper Deck uses the company’s top hockey staff to package the product by hand.

The process takes several days to complete with staff typically working over 12 hours per day. Their goal is to make sure each pack and case is sorted randomly, but also delivers superior value for collectors. The long hours and hard work pays off as the team assembles each pack knowing its loyal fan base will have a great experience when investing in a product like The Cup.

One of the best parts for the team is to get up close and personal with all the amazing cards they worked so hard to build. This week the team has been busy completing the packout for 2009-10 NHL The Cup. Check out this rare behind-the-scenes look at some of the most inspired and innovative NHL cards of the year.

2009-10 NHL The Cup boasts a variety of very unique game-used patch autograph cards.

This is a very limited card where we take the NHL shield from the jersey and embed it into the trading card. And on the other side...

you have another NHL shield from a game-used jersey of a top star like Evgeni Malkin.

Here is a unique assortment of limited Alexander Ovechkin game-used patch autograph cards. When you put them together, you can get a feel of what it looked like before the patch was cut.

A beautiful Sidney Crosby one-of-one autograph jersey card commemorating his Stanley Cup Championship.

The rookies from the 2009-10 NHL rookie class are a big draw and one of the most popular is John Tavares.

John Tavares, Matt Duchene and James van Riemsdyk are the three rookies with cards limited to just 99 copies in the base set.

The Cup is not just about rookies. It pays homage to some of the greatest names in NHL history.

Cut autographs of deceased legends are embedded into 2009-10 NHL The Cup cards.

These super rare collectibles typically trade for big money in the secondary market.

The Cup brings authentic autograph cards of the biggest NHL legends to collectors eager hands.

Wayne Gretzky autograph and game-used cards can only be found in Upper Deck products.

Here are signatures from a few other exclusive signers for Upper Deck like Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, LeBron James and Michael Jordan. All who will have autograph cards in 2009-10 NHL The Cup.

The "Property Of" cards from The Cup are very popular every year.

We cut off the nameplate from their game-used sticks and use it for this insert set.

This is a great one of Ovechkin.

Here are a few more of these very unique cards.

A great "Property Of" card of the new Stanley Cup champ and Olympic gold medalist.

And a few more of the "Property Of" inserts.

The 2010 NHLPA Rookie Showcase changed venues this year and the setup changed as well.  Last year’s event was held by Upper Deck at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga. This year’s event was held in Etobicoke at the MasterCard Centre, hosted by the NHLPA, and had co-licensees’ Upper Deck and Panini there to represent the trading card community.

Orchestrated by the NHLPA, the event had 23 players participating, almost double the amount of high-profile rookies from last year.  Many teams were well represented, with Boston and Edmonton both sending three high-profile rookies.

Edmonton's Big Three: Eberle, Hall and Paajarvi get ready to earn their acting chops.

Number one overall pick in this past year’s draft, Taylor Hall, along with 2008 pick (22nd overall) and defending CHL Player of the Year, Canadian World Junior superhero Jordan Eberle and 2009 10th overall pick Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson (who recently dropped the Svensson part of his last name) highlighted the three up-and-coming Edmonton Oiler stars. All impressive in their own right, they are all hoping to be key contributors as the Oilers look to turn their franchise around. Should be a fun year collecting for these three high-profile players. Looking forward to seeing key rookies like their young guns, future watch autographs and probably something neat with all three on them. Do I smell a “Sign of the Times Triple” in their futures?  Might be a bit early to tell for sure, but that would be a great card for Edmonton Oiler fans. Look for the same with the Boston trio of Tyler Seguin, Zach Hamill and Joe Colborne.

Having a unique opportunity to be at this event was not lost on me. I was able to meet and talk with many of the future stars of the league.  I may be getting older, but these kids sure seemed young! Watching their on-ice skills was impressive to say the least. Tomas Tatar of the Detroit Red Wings stood out as a player with flair. He is someone who really wants to please the crowds. Ryan Johansen is another player who seems anxious to prove he is ready for the next level.  Comparisons to Joe Thornton have set the bar high, and he hopes to use his vision and hockey sense to become one of the elite playmakers in the league. Three players in particular impressed me with their size:  Joe Colborne, Erik Gudbranson and Jacob Markstrom. These kids have NHL-ready bodies, and once they fill out even more, will most certainly be “man wall” worthy. They carry presence.

Big Boy: Florida goaltender Jacob Markstrom poses a serious hurdle for slap-shot artists.

The kids are all very well spoken, a testament to the fact they have been elite athletes their whole lives and have always been the “next big thing” in their respective towns. They are on the cusp of making their families and friends all proud. Several of the young stars spoke of their respective father’s influence at a young age, driving them to early morning practices, and getting them to tournaments. Mom’s roles were not lost either, always being there at games, and having snacks ready for them.

In the end it was a lot of business as photos had to be taken, autographs needed to be signed and the day was not without obstacles. The main arena was flush with heavy fog at ice level. It was certainly warm outside that day, so it played a role. All parties involved quickly moved much of the on-ice components to another rink in the arena, where fog wasn’t an issue and got down to business. It was good to see everyone make such smooth adjustments over the course of the day any time a new hurdle presented itself.

One thing that was great to see was Upper Deck hosting winners of various contests as well. They were able to give lucky kids (and a few lucky adults) a chance to be a part of the day, hosting them at the event. Some lucky kids were even able to mix in with the young stars in some of Upper Deck’s soon-to-be-unveiled video skits.  It was good to see smiles on their faces.

This year’s rookie class has a lot of potential. Not only are there this year’s top picks, the top four of which were all at the event (Taylor Hall, Tyler Seguin, Erik Gudbranson and Ryan Johansen), but also high-end prospects such as Nazem Kadri, Braden Schenn and Jordan Eberle. Sixteen other top-end talents were also there and we look forward to seeing their first live rookie cards.  One thing that is not lost on these kids is the hobby; many of them collected at a young age, and they understand that the hobby is big business, from the young kids opening up packs of hockey cards to the adults who buy looking for the big hit. They all had their heroes growing up, and they hope to comprise the next wave of hockey heroes.

Congratulations to all who made the event such a success: the NHLPA reps for being accessible; the players who were more than willing to talk; and to Upper Deck officials for making themselves available to discuss the upcoming season. They were all able to promote the game and the hobby in a very positive light. This is my first musings from the event, but look for a full report including in-depth interviews with a variety of the stars in “The Insider’s Edge” (www.insidersedge.net). It was a great day for me as a hobby enthusiast, and I hope to get another invitation to cover the event next year.

Christopher Carmichael has been hockey fan of over 20 years. He has been an active member on various hobby related sites, most notably www.hobbyinsider.net, and www.cloutsnchara.com. A long time collector, with a focus on a few select player collections, and the occasional set projects. As well as blogging for Upper Deck, he is an occasional contributor to “The Insider’s Edge”, as well as the Clouts ‘n Chara blog as well.
