Brag Photo: A Mammoth Mail Day at Upper Deck
ByThe practice of incorporating fossils of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures started last year in 2008-09 NHL Champ’s Hockey, a vintage set that boasted the catch phrase, “Where the ICE meets the ICE AGE…” The cards looked great and were a big hit with collectors with many selling for hundreds of dollars in the secondary market.
It was so popular, we brought it back again for the 2009-10 NHL Champ’s product. Acquiring some of these rare items is not always easy however and Upper Deck has gone all out to get some really unique pieces to include in the “Museum Pieces” insert set. Redemption cards for these unique inserts could be found 1:case on average.
So here are a couple items we received in today that we just had to share. The Woolly Mammoth femur is just huge and will be a little difficult to cut, but we have a special vendor we are working with to handle this. Check out a couple different images of this behemoth:
Here’s what the Woolly Mammoth looked like back in the day…
And then there is the giant prehistoric alligator tooth. This will be a one-of-one card as we likely will not risk cutting this artifact. It will be housed in a very thick card.
Here’s what the this creature looked like and an example of it’s skull compared to a regular alligator’s skull.
We are working diligently to acquire a few more unique pieces so we can begin the production process and get these out to collectors waiting on them this summer. We’ll share more images right here as these cards progress.
Leave a comment about what you think about these cards for your chance to receive a FREE box of 2009-10 NHL Champ’s. We will award one box to a lucky customer on Monday, June 14 at 10:00AM PDT.

I think these cards are awesome. I think people get tired of regular sports cards, and they need something special to shake them up a little. These cards sure do that, and you guys do a great job of keeping us guessing as to what’s next !

As a kid growing up in Western New York..I collected 2 things growing up..fossils and hockey cards. I really love the idea of the 2 together with Upper Deck Champs. I have yet to find a fossil card but I am trying. Keep up the great and unique work Upper Deck! Thanks for bringing two of my favorites together.
June 11th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

June 11th, 2010 at 4:13 pm

June 11th, 2010 at 4:13 pm
I think this is just totally awesome……..I was fortunate to get one of these cards and I am waiting impatiently as I know this will be super……….my nephew and niece are waiting to see this piece they are in elemetary school and are learning about Dinosaurs and fossils when I told them that I will be receiving a real prehistoric piece but don’t know what it will be yet they were real excited and want me to tell them when it arrives so they can come over to see it…..I find that you folks at Upperdeck went all out on this and the Champs set as well with the inclusion of Historical Figures and Wonders of the World cards which both my niece and nephew have great interests and I find they are fantastic and a great way to educate the young mind……Job well done
June 11th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
These cards are just amazing. It is like owning a mueseum piece if you are lucky enough to have one.
June 11th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
I have opened a box of this stuff up. I love it, I didn’t get to pull a redemption card, but hopefully next time. That tooth would be a sweet item to have. Thanks for sharing.
June 11th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
These fossils are amazing. It is nice to see the wolly mammoth get some great recognition. that femur looks amazing considering its age and would be a great peice to put at the centre of my, or anyone elses collection. The alligator tooth is just spectacular. That is a real gem of the set. I started collecting the Champs cards last year, and they have quickly become one of my favorites. They might not be the nicest looking cards but the inclusion of the fossils makes this set special and great. Keep up the good work Upper Deck!
June 11th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
I would love one of these
June 11th, 2010 at 4:16 pm
Champ’s is a great product all around. Last year’s set is the first hockey set I’ve ever put together and am in the process of finishing this years. I was lucky enough to get an Aterian Scraper from last year’s product and am awaiting for a redemption from this year. Just a personal critique, I think having the Rookies represented on the mini cards only this year is an improvement. As far as only pulling fiver per box, well that’s part of the challege of completing the set. The non sport minis don’t speak to some, they’re good in my book. The Hall of Legends, Champions autographs, & Museum Pieces especially are great. Keep up the good work and innovative cards.
I’ve also seen a Tavares rookie auto pulled from my favorit store as well as a redemption for a Crosby auto!
June 11th, 2010 at 4:16 pm
Pretty cool that you can take these pieces that we could normally only see behind glass in a museum and now we can own a small piece of it for ourselves.
June 11th, 2010 at 4:18 pm
WOW just amazing cards and very cool pieces to be processing! would be just awesome to pull on of these
June 11th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
I absolutely love this subset. It’s such an awesome idea. I only collect hockey cards so it’s even better, when I was a kid I used to dream of being a paleontologist. My 3 year old son and I have busted several boxes of Champs so far this year. He loves the mini cards and Natural History mini cards. We got a box last weekend and hit our first Museum Pieces last weekend. I would love to get that Woolly Mammoth and especially the T-Rex fossil.
June 11th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
I will be honest and say I never really thought Dinosaurs could have anything in common with sports cards but these card are really intriguing. I think you guys really stumbled on a great idea here…. I have always been fascinated with history and dinosaurs. Now you really got me thinking I might have to try to acquire some of these beauts lol. Keep up the good work UD!!
June 11th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
I have never seen this before. Beautiful pieces, I wonder what type of holder i’d put ‘em in if i got one? lol
June 11th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
awesome!
i got two of these last year and got two for this year! I have assembled entire base sets and minis from both champs issues and thoroughly enjoy the set building that this product reinvigorated in this 44 year collector!
thank you for a wonderful product and a chance for prehistoric history
June 11th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Wow! I can’t imagine pulling a card out of a pack with a piece of dinosaur bone, rofl!!!
June 11th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
It is Awesome..Good to see some different stuff in sports products.
June 11th, 2010 at 4:58 pm
Wow that T-REX would be an awesome pull. Its nice to see some different stuff. I don’t normally collect hockey but I might have to start..
June 11th, 2010 at 4:59 pm
It great to have something to get my kids excited with the past. Great job Upper deck!
June 11th, 2010 at 5:06 pm
i would love to get that.it is insane.i can only get my hands on the blaster boxes and let me tell you they are not worth it.i wish there was a place around me that would sell the champs,i would by a case if i had the chance.
June 11th, 2010 at 5:10 pm
Amazing is pretty much all I can say. Crazy how the card landscape has changed so much. Awesome stuff UD!
June 11th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
My six year old son is waiting on one redemption from this year, we had two fossil cards from last year and can’t wait for more!! Great way to get younger kids into collecting!!
June 11th, 2010 at 5:27 pm
they are incredible. where else can you find a tyrannosaurus rex femur bone? that is better than any autograph or jersey swatch, these are so limited. great job i am so excited to see them up close.
June 11th, 2010 at 5:28 pm
This is a fantastic and unique set that Upper Deck has come up with. It is the only sports memorabilia product that goes above and beyond by bringing fans in touch with a piece of mankinds history! Keep up the good work UD!
June 11th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
Personally, I love the idea of these. It’s fun, original and very cool. Would LOVE to get the 1 of 1 giant alligator tooth. Always fun pulling something that you can put on display and have “regular” people appreciate as well
June 11th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Awesome stuff! I love these cards! They are great chase cards, very unique and interesting. I pre-ordered a box of this stuff last year in hopes to pull one of those. Champ’s is a very fun product to bust and this year’s unique chase cards are really neat, too!
June 11th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Wow, really neat stuff, Need one of those!!!!
June 11th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
I cant wait to get the card !! this is the coolest pull I have had in a while !!! great job UD !!!!
June 11th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
T-Rex Cards Look Great!
June 11th, 2010 at 6:08 pm
These cards are awesome. I’ve always been fascinated by dinosaurs and have been a big hockey fan since I was little so this set of cards really is the best of both worlds and is just a beautiful set. Keep up the fantastic work UD!
June 11th, 2010 at 6:28 pm
[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Naomi, Upper Deck Hockey. Upper Deck Hockey said: Woolly Mammoth fossils embedded in a Upper Deck trading card? You better believe it: http://cot.ag/cLkQbT #fossils #dinosaurs [...]
June 11th, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Now those are collectables! Way to go, Upper Deck!
June 11th, 2010 at 6:34 pm
WOW! This is simply awesome! There is no way any average person can simply aquire a piece of any of these prehistoric artifacts/animals other than this program. Major kuddos to UpperDeck for giving everyone a chance to own a real piece of history! These are definately keepers for anyone who pulls them!
June 11th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
Wow that card looks awesome! It’s nice to see something different in the hobby every once in a while.
June 11th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
I have been looking for a way in which I could bring my kids into the hobby and the prehistoric cards were the big winner. They love the cards and are actually wanting to go to the hobby shop. We have yet to score a fossil card but the hunt continues.
June 11th, 2010 at 6:54 pm
I love the concept and the chance at one of these artifacts that we would otherwise not have. Keep up the good work on all the new creative ideas. Keeping it fresh
June 11th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
I would love to get my hands on a piece of history like that. Those are some great additions to add to a set. I think Champs is a great idea. Hockey and the Prehistoric was an amazing idea. Keep up the great work UD.
June 11th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
I’ve bought several boxes of Champs, always hoping to pull a redemption for one of those fossil cards. Haven’t had any luck so far, but maybe today is my lucky day.
June 11th, 2010 at 7:59 pm
Awesome with a capital A. My daughter is so excited about the cards, I thought the bug cards got her excited these are off the chart.
June 11th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Not a bad thing I can say about these cards. Absolutely phenomenal!
June 11th, 2010 at 9:37 pm
I have a really nice spot next to my UD Entomology card that needs filling. That alligator tooth is just the ticket lol. Keep it up UD your headed in the right direction esp with this release!

June 11th, 2010 at 9:37 pm
I want one!!! will display great to my entomology cards!
June 11th, 2010 at 9:46 pm
Being intersted in Dinosaurs as a child, not only does this bring back fond memories. It also add’s a little more excitement to the normal card collector. Upper Deck has alway’s had their finger on the pulse of the collector’s desires. The T-Rrex Card is amazing, why not just do a whole set?
June 11th, 2010 at 10:32 pm
I think these cards are pretty sweet…I think you should get a Piece of Chuck Norris’s Moustach and put that in a card! Now THATS relic! Way To Go UD you stuck gold again with the Champs Cards!
June 11th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
I just started collecting hockey cards this year and spent some big bucks on other ud products, my local card shop talked me into trying some of the champs and wow I love them. It is something so different from other cards and comeon you can get fossils! How cool is that!!! It is on the top of my list for hockey cards!!! Keep up the awsome work ud!!!
June 11th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
I think the inclusion of these cards into the hobby packs just speaks volumes of Upper Decks quest for searching for new and innovative ways to make the hobby fun. It is also a cool cross-over to keep collectors a little more well rounded to learn about something other than sports etc. A piece of a T-Rex would be much more applicable as a conversation piece with other people so it could have an effect of bringing in more collectors too. Even better, it is so cool for the card to mention WHAT bone it is of as well, instead of guesswork.
June 11th, 2010 at 10:58 pm
The evolution of sports cards; UD have Revolutionized the way we collect cards today. It’s unbelievable how UD turned the card industry to a multi-million dollar hobby!
Love the fresh, new ideas, love the passion and quality that goes into UD’s products!!
June 11th, 2010 at 11:21 pm
usually just collect hockey cards but this stuff is really awesome!! need to get me some.
June 12th, 2010 at 2:07 am
Great subset, any thoughts of digging up a “Chelios” bone for the dino subset…. just saying.. the dude is old.
June 12th, 2010 at 4:54 am
Have a couple Wooly Mammoth cards from last years product, looking forward to seeing what I receive from the 09-10 redemption I pulled last week. Great product.
June 12th, 2010 at 5:00 am
Wow! UD really hit the nail on this one, first it was gu cards, then patch, then other pieces, now they have the ability to get their hands on fossils, bones, and other rare things from millions of years ago! these can be great for kids of any age. i’d love to get my hands on one.
June 12th, 2010 at 5:31 am
Champs cards are the best.I feel like I went back in time, when cards were cards. No blinding gloss, shinihg gold or silver, just plain jane cards.Love them.Only problem…my wife says I’ve spent too much money on them and won’t let me buy anymore. help me out UpperDeck.
June 12th, 2010 at 8:12 am
When I was a kid, when I was a little boy, I always wanted to be a dinosaur, I wanted to be a Tyrannosaurus Rex more than anything in the world, I made my arms short and I roamed the back yard, I chased the neighborhood cats, I growled and I roared, everybody knew me and was afraid of me, and one day my dad said “Bobby you are 17, it’s time to throw childish things aside” and I said “OK Pop”, but he didn’t really say that he said that “Stop being a dinosaur and get a job”.
June 12th, 2010 at 8:17 am
Last year I bought tons of champs with the hopes of landing one of those bad boys. No luck. This year however I did manage to pull one of the museum pieces. Love the look and idea of the card and can’t wait to finally get mine to show off to my nephews, who are in their dinosaur craze right now.
June 12th, 2010 at 9:08 am
this is awesome. i have been a dino love since i was a kid. and to actually own a pic of a bone from one is even better. i havent bought any of these boxes yet but i will do that in the near future.
June 12th, 2010 at 10:15 am
I love the Champs set from upper deck, and would be completely ecstatic to obtain one of these redemption cards. I can just imagine how floored I would be to get something even close to a giant prehistoric alligator tooth! I am a huge hockey fan, and like the fact that with this set, you can have some fun with history at the same time, and my daughter definitely enjoys breaking as well. I have got her hooked! And not a bad way for her to want to spend some of her own money on occasion, and makes great gifts for her.
Go Champs!
June 12th, 2010 at 11:50 am
I love for you guy’s decided to add this very unique product to the lineup in 2008-09. It gives collectors the chance to pull some unique and extraordinary pieces of history! The Wolly Mammoth cards are beyond amazing, but the idea of mini cards such as mini jersey’s and rookies is quite impressive. I bought 1 box last year to try it out, I loved it instantly. So that lead me to buying a case this year and im still not finished if you know what I mean
June 12th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
These cards are just amazing. I think every kid grew up loving dinosaurs and these would make a perfect conversational piece in anyone’s collection.
June 12th, 2010 at 3:05 pm
These cards are awesome, instead of pulling a 4th line player no one likes, you have a chance to grab a piece of something prehistoric. Unbelievable.
June 12th, 2010 at 3:26 pm
I can say that I am a fan of fossils, I mean they were around way before. It’s neat to find out about how they lived and survived. Upper Deck is giving the chance at getting one of these rare pieces is a piece of work.
Made me a fan of Champs and still a fan of Upper Deck. NIce work and thanks for adding to our hobby
June 12th, 2010 at 11:30 pm
That card containing the tooth is going to be enormous! I’m a fan of this kind of thing–I got my first “Hollywood History” relic today: Ben Stiller. They’re pretty cool cards and as long as they don’t overpower the sports cards in a sports product, they’re A-OK! Have you guys ever considered an actual prehistoric product, having nothing to do with sports?
June 13th, 2010 at 4:43 am
Champs is such a cool product! I just started collecting hockey cards and spent alot of money on different products and get really cool cards. But champs is cheap compaired to other products and still very fun and exciteing pack to open! I wish I would have waited for champs to come out before I spent alot of my card money on the more exspensive packs. Great Product UD!!!!
June 13th, 2010 at 7:10 am
My boyfriend had bought 3 boxes of Champs a couple of months ago telling me how he could get actual dinosaur pieces on the cards. After opening all his packs he was so disappointed that he didn’t get any.He keeps on telling me how he would love to buy another box but they are too expensive.I would love to make him happy, and getting another box would do that for sure. Thank you.
June 13th, 2010 at 7:16 am
I am not a huge hockey guy but I loved the Goodwin baseball so I tried a few packs did really hit anything but like them went back to grab a few more but someone had put holes in all the packs to see if their was any hits so I left them behind. I would love to pull a remdeption for one of those cards and the kids would love to take that to show and tell
June 13th, 2010 at 10:22 am
This is probably my favourite Upper Deck product. I pulled an auto and a redemption the first day it was available. I can’t wait to get my “game-used” dinosaur!
June 13th, 2010 at 11:52 am
Wow, these cards are really nice! I’ve always been a big fan of Hockey & Upper Deck. I’m not sure which would be a more exciting pull, a Sydney Crosby auto or a fossil! A set that can say it contains the “Greats of the Ice!”
June 13th, 2010 at 1:45 pm
I love the fossils in the Champs. It doesnt stop me from opening up packs with real hockey players in them, theyre just extra so why not? I love the Champs too though, it makes up for not having the Parkhurst sets anymore… I use to love those, but as long as theres something along these lines I am very happy… and with Champs… I am very happy.
June 13th, 2010 at 5:09 pm
these r great. i teach the 2nd grade and was thinking of buying a box for the class to open and see what we may pull out. how great would this be for a class project
June 13th, 2010 at 5:11 pm
i love to collect cards and these r something crazy if you pulled out a piece of old,old history. keep up the great work upper deck
June 13th, 2010 at 5:18 pm
my dad showed me these because i love dinosaurs. it would be cool to win some of the bones. i would show everyone i knowat school
June 13th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
my grandchildren love the t-rex how nice would that be if i could win a box to give them as a present and they really found a bone inside. thank-you for doing this upperdeck
June 14th, 2010 at 5:11 am
Pretty amazing stuff – how cool would it be to get the full alligator tooth 1/1? I broke a few boxes and didn’t pull a redemption, but congrats to those who did! =)
June 14th, 2010 at 7:47 am
Upper Deck has always produced a great premium product, but this year it looks like they are making history…literally. I’m not sure which would be better – to pull a Sidney Crosby Auto or a fossil!? Maybe a Buffalo Saber or a Sabertooth? Possibly an Atlanta Thrasher or a thrashing Tyrannosaurus Rex? Inserts keep the hobby exciting! These cards can truly be called “the legends of the ice!!!” Great job!
June 14th, 2010 at 8:02 am
Pretty unreal what you’re able to do with cards now. Very cool that you’re able to share history like that.
June 14th, 2010 at 10:04 am
Congratulations to Hubert Repetowski for being selected as the random recipient of the 2009-10 NHL Champ’s Box. Thanks to everyone for their feedback!
June 14th, 2010 at 10:22 am
WOW! I actually won something! Props to UD for this awesome giveaway. Can’t wait to bust it!
-Hubert
June 19th, 2010 at 9:12 pm
that is amazing stuff i like the pic of the alligator jumping out of the water and getting that animal. but im not quite sure what that animal is? beats me and cool wooly mammoth sweet tusk. these are real awesome things!
January 4th, 2012 at 12:24 pm
anyone know how old the wooly mammoth molars are?
