The good news is that Upper Deck just renewed its hockey card license with both the NHLPA and the NHL. It’s a multi-year deal, so we’ll continue to deliver red-hot cards for years to come. But this time around we’ll be sharing the stage with Panini America, maker (for the most part) of collectible stickers. It’ll be interesting to see what Panini brings to the table for the 2010-11 NHL season, but we realize this means taking the category to a whole new level. You see, we know all about hockey trading cards and even a thing or two about exclusives.

For the record, Upper Deck has been producing NHL-licensed hockey cards non-stop since the 1990-91 season, and since 2005 we’ve been the only NHL-licensed card manufacturer stocking store shelves across North America. Our time, money and resources spent building up the category and getting fans and collectors psyched to buy hockey cards has worked wonders. In fact, due to some of our grassroots campaigns to grow the hockey card market, the powers-that-be at the league offices figured it was time to open things up to allow for two hockey card manufacturers since the audience continues to grow.

Now the question is: Will opening things up to include more than one licensed hockey card manufacturer be the best move for collectors? We’ll all have to take a wait-and-see approach, but Upper Deck is comfortable with the arrangement. We know that we’ve been producing the best hockey cards the hobby has ever seen for the past 20 years and did a remarkable job as the league’s exclusive provider for the past five. We’ve created “must-have” high-end trading cards, and we were blessed to have rookies like Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin, Jonathan Toews, Steven Stamkos and John Tavares enter the league under our exclusive agreement which only helped to convert more fans into hockey card collectors. Top-selling brands like The Cup, O-Pee-Chee Premier and Champ’s, along with SP Authentic, SPx and Black Diamond have established Upper Deck as the leader in hockey cards. The sport is faster, sleeker and more popular than ever before. And once again, Upper Deck will be there to chronicle the best of the best and provide collectors with optimal choices when it comes to their favorite teams and stars.

Besides producing the best trading cards, we’ve done a lot to build the category in general. Hobby shops across North America have been thriving with their hockey cards sales as we’ve continually produced sought-after rookie cards, as well as high-end (and super scarce) autographed game-used memorabilia cards. But it’s been some of our marketing campaigns that have really catapulted enthusiasm around the globe. Our “Biography of a Season” program, where collectors can get one FREE card every week of a standout player with any $5 pack purchase, keeps fans coming back for more. Our “Hockey Card Heaven” initiative, where we rewarded two card shops in Canada with a player appearance based on their own efforts to market hockey cards, had shop owners focused on initiatives to improve their businesses. And our “National Hockey Card Day” campaign in Canada continues to attract thousands of new collectors to the category by awarding FREE packs of hockey cards to fans who visit retailers.

Are we nervous about the competition? Not in the least. In fact, we say: “Bring it on.”

I remember watching the NFL championship game at the end of last season, and being less than thrilled that the high powered offense of the Vikings never made it onto the field during overtime. After Favre threw the pick to end regulation, the Saints took the overtime kickoff and marched deep into Vikings territory to kick a field goal and end the game. One of the best offenses in the league didn’t even get a shot to secure themselves a trip to Miami, and a lot of fans were angry. Since the game highlighted a trend in overtime wins for teams that only manage a field goal, the NFL competition committee set out to change the rules for the upcoming year’s playoffs.

fieldgoal

On Tuesday, the NFL announced that the new rules had been adopted, and I took it as a potential game-changer come playoff time. Basically, if a playoff game ends in a tie, the coin toss will happen as usual. If the receiving team scores a touchdown in any way, the game is over – sudden death style. If the receiving team only kicks a field goal, the other team will have a shot to get on the field and score. The rules are only in effect for the playoffs, and regular season games are still subject to similar rules.

Despite the fact that the Vikings could have benefitted from this rule, they were actually one of four teams to vote against the measure. As a reason for voting against the change, the teams cited equality of wins from teams who took the kickoff to start the extra frame. What many failed to see was that for all games, the 50/50 split of winners is correct, but not since the kickoffs were moved back. Since teams began kicking from the 30, more than 55% of winning teams took the overtime kickoff. This also may be a result of more accurate kickers and better players on offense, but the fact still remains that the overtime rules favored the team who gets the ball. Thanks to the new rule change, there is a failsafe.

Is it a sure thing that the Vikings would have gotten to Miami had the rules been different? Not at all, but they would have at least had a chance. I think the new rules should support more balanced ends to the games that count, although I believe they should have taken it much further. With such a short season, I think it should have been adopted league wide to prevent cheaper wins than the new rules allow. I also think they should eventually move closer to the way college football does it, to promote equal chances that are not based on a random flip of a coin.

Overall, rule changes are always polarizing, especially in some sports. This particular rule should not affect many games, but when it does, I have a feeling the fans will get exactly what they want.

When we started UpperDeckBlog.com about a year ago, a big motivating factor was to get involved with the passionate online communities that are dedicated to the hobby. Whether it’s opinionated blogs, forum communities or box breaks (a great concept that has been around for years), there are so many ways for collectors to get involved, and make their hobby into a shared experience. We’ve been fortunate enough to bring some of the top hobby bloggers on board here to do features for us, but we also monitor forums, blogs and box breaks closely, so that we always have the pulse of our customers. It’s something we take a lot of pride in, and we were happy to see Voice of the Collector rank us #1 in the industry for social media last year.

To recognize the best of the hobby community, we officially launched the Upper Deck Awards yesterday. In case you missed it, here are the basic details:

  • We will be giving out three awards: Best Online Community, Best Blog and Best Video Box Breaker. The top five in each category will receive exposure on Upper Deck’s official websites and social media outlets.
  • Want to nominate your favorites? Click on the links above, and post your nominations as comments on each trophy’s photo page. Once voting starts, we will provide a link to a URL where you can cast your ballot for the final winner in each category.
  • The Best Online Community will receive: a trophy, a variety of unopened product, a LeBron James UDA basketball and a 2009 NFL Rookie Photo Shoot signed football (autographed by more than 25 players) to use as giveaways with their community of loyal collectors.
  • The Best Blog will receive: a trophy, a variety of unopened product and a 2009 NFL Rookie Photo Shoot signed football.
  • The top five Video Box Breakers will receive a box of product to break and review, which we’ll post on Upper Deck Diamond Vision. The winner will receive product from us throughout the year, and all of their box breaks will be featured on Diamond Vision!

As the NHL regular season winds down and we get into the final ten games of the season, some teams are looking for their ticket to the big dance while others are fighting for positioning. The best teams are already set, knowing they’re headed to the playoffs.

Let’s take a look at who falls into each category:

There are a few teams that are just playing out the string.  Teams like the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning are playing for draft position.  The Toronto Maple Leafs are playing for draft position as well, but of a different kind; they are hoping to win games this season and next, so they don’t have a first round draft pick (having moved it to acquire Phil Kessel).  In the case of the other teams listed, without “tanking” teams will look to get the highest potential to win the draft lottery.  There are some blue chips near the top of the draft, potential cornerstones even.  For the first time in years, there is not a clear cut #1 overall pick, but there’s plenty of talent to be had. Tyler Seguin and Taylor Hall could both turn around a franchise in need.

There are a couple of teams that know they are going to the playoffs, but only one (the Washington Capitals) has already clinched their division.  All of a sudden, San Jose is not a lock to win their division, as the Phoenix Coyotes have actually jumped them in the division standings (although the Sharks do have a game in hand).  The Buffalo Sabres seem primed to win the Northeast division at this point, being nine points clear of second place Ottawa and Montreal with a game in hand . . . but by no means is it a lock just yet.  Same goes for Chicago, eight points clear of Nashville at this point.

sabres

In the east, the number five seed (Ottawa Senators) and the number nine seed (Atlanta Thrashers) are separated by a mere four  points, so there is much jostling to be going on over the last couple of weeks.  Teams like the New York Rangers (71 points) and to a lesser extent the Florida Panthers (69 points) are trying to claw themselves back into the race. If I were to take a best guess on who gets in and who is left out, I would think that the Philadelphia Flyers have the best chance to be left on the outside; I just am not sure about their goalie situation coming down the stretch. Season starting keeper Ray Emery was lost to injury, and waiver wire superstar Michael Leighton is also now out with a high ankle sprain for up to two months, leaving duties to career back up Brian Boucher and rookie Jeremy Duchesne.

Here is what my first round matchups in the east look like:

(1) Washington vs. (8) Boston

(2) Pittsburgh vs. (7) Atlanta

(3) Buffalo vs. (6) Montreal

(4) New Jersey vs. (5) Ottawa

Flipping my attention back to the west, there are certainly some intriguing plot lines heading into the last couple weeks.  As mentioned, the conference title is still very much up for grabs with the Blackhawks, Coyotes and Sharks all within one point of one another and the Canucks lingering just four behind them.

san-jose-win

The other big race is about seeing who gets into the playoffs.  Currently the Detroit Red Wings have 83 points, just two points up on the Calgary Flames. Yes, the same Red Wings who represented the West in the Stanley Cup each of the past two years, winning in the 07-08 season. Then it gets real interesting; the St. Louis Blues, Anaheim Ducks, Dallas Stars and Minnesota Wild are all within five points of Calgary and think they can make it to the dance.  Of those teams, currently the Ducks are playing the best hockey, but I think it will come down to Detroit and Calgary for the final spot.  With the way that the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings have played all season, it would be a shame for either one of those teams to fall out of a spot this late in the season.  I don’t think it’ll happen, but nothing surprises me anymore.  The West certainly has a different feel to it at this time of the year.  Nashville seems to have locked up a spot, and again, while not a lock, don’t seem to be in a dogfight like it seems to be for them in every other year when the schedule has ten games to go.  Colorado and Los Angeles are back in the fold with Phoenix, and Detroit is not fighting for the top seed. There is a clear changing of the guard, and it is very exciting.

flames fighting

Here is how I think the West will shake out going into the playoffs:

(1)   Chicago vs. (8) Detroit

(2)   San Jose vs. (7) Colorado

(3)   Vancouver vs. (6) Los Angeles

(4)   Phoenix vs. (5) Nashville

If (and this is a big if) Phoenix and Nashville do end up against one another, clearly one of them moves on to the second round.  I can’t see any team wanting to play the winner of that series after they gain the confidence of knowing they can win a playoff round. These eight teams that come out of the West will beat each other up physically and mentally, and it will be interesting to see who comes out of the conference.

phoenix

At this point, that is as far as my prognostications will go.  Once I know who is in and who is out, we can look back, I can put together my picks, and we will look at how the playoffs shake out.  The last 2-3 weeks are going to be a dandy in both conferences and should be fun to see who rises and falls in and ultimately out of contention.  This is the time of year where hobby heroes can be made, and I have a feeling that there will be a couple that steps up their game.
