Happy Holidays from Upper Deck!

Posted by: Toby Wachter | Comments (0)

Like many of you, today is our last day at the office before going on holiday break. We’ll be taking a break from the blog during this time as well, but we’ll be back in the New Year with the same quality daily content you’ve come to expect.

Thanks to everyone who followed our blog in this first year. It’s been a lot of fun for us to write and produce, and we’ve been so happy to share our love of sports with our readers . . . not to mention providing sneak peeks inside our building, and some of the cool stuff we get to do. Big thanks to our outside contributors as well: whether they’re collectors or sports fans, it’s been great to give them a platform to share their passion.

Have a safe and happy holiday season and New Year, and we’ll see you in 2010!

If winning free cards isn’t enough motivation to get you to enter the codes from the back of your 2009 Upper Deck rookie cards, there will be an added bonus each week for one participant who guesses the Rookie of the Week. As part of the Own the Rookies promotion, one lucky collector will take home an autographed football signed by all of the top 2009 rookies present at the Rookie Premiere. That means authentic signatures from Mark Sanchez, Matt Stafford, Percy Harvin, and all of the other rookies on one awesome football. To the collectors who picked Mike Wallace this week, you have the chance to win one ridiculously cool prize!

One of the most exciting reasons to collect NFL rookie cards is that you get to watch their values spike if the player performs well on the field. To help capture that excitement, Upper Deck launched a new website to help collectors not just track 2009 NFL rookie cards, but also to make predictions on which rookie would have the best week at OwnTheRookies.com.

Collectors who successfully guess Upper Deck’s “Rookie of the Week” will be entered into a drawing to win a box of 2009 NFL trading cards. For catching two touchdown passes, as well as the game winner as time expired, Mike Wallace has won this week’s top rookie honor. If you entered codes from Wallace’s cards last week, stay tuned to the website to see if you are a winner!

We have come to the end of another week, and yet again, we have another great performance by a rookie wide receiver. I love it. To have this many standout rookies in one season is great for the NFL, and even better for the people who collect sports cards. It only further solidifies that any rookie someone can pull in a pack has the chance to be a star on the field. If you don’t believe me, look back over the last 15 weeks for proof. There have been rookies from the first round, rookies from the later rounds, quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and others. Its been a great season so far, and I don’t see it letting up any time soon.

This week in the closing seconds of the Steelers’ win over the Packers, Mike Wallace became the second rookie to catch a game-winning TD pass. Wallace already caught a long touchdown earlier in the game, and his catch to end it was epic, to say the least. This isn’t the first time Wallace has had late game heroics either, as in week one, Wallace caught a key pass in overtime to set the Steelers up for a game-winning field goal. This time the heroics came in the last seconds, Wallace just barely getting his second foot down in the endzone before tumbling out of bounds. He left the Packers’ defense stunned, but after seeing Wallace play this year, it shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise.

Much like other Upper Deck rookie-of-the-week winners like Mohammed Massaquoi and Louis Murphy, Wallace was drafted later in the third round of the draft, behind almost ten other wide receivers. That hasn’t stopped him from performing at the top of his game, catching five TD passes over the course of the season and averaging 17.9 yards per catch. He has been a great addition as a number three guy behind Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes, playing mostly out of the slot. He was drafted for his speed and hands out of Ole Miss, and that has panned out completely for Pittsburgh. In fact, without his recent catch, Pittsburgh may have had a one-way ticket to sitting in front of the TV in January.

Wallace was also selected to be a part of the 2009 Rookie Premiere, which is the reason he has been featured on a great selection of cards from the year. Wallace’s cards have attained some of the top values of the rookie class due to his production, and this past week should be quite helpful in raising that value past expectations. My favorite card of his so far is the Rookie Threads dual jersey card from this year’s SP Threads set. This one is beyond awesome due to the use of an acetate element in the card, as well as having two player worn swatches and low numbering. The photo of Wallace is extremely dynamic, and it complements the interesting composition of the acetate and swatch parts of the card.

wallace1

I’m also a big fan of his SPX jersey auto, as it is always one of the more valuable cards of the year. Even with SP Authentic and Ultimate Collection on the horizon, this card will hold its own due to how much collectors embrace the SPX brand, and because the gold background works so well with the Steelers’ team colors. It also has an autograph and three player worn swatches, making this a display-worthy addition to your Wallace collection.

wallace3

Lastly, for the Ole Miss fans out there, you can’t go wrong with his base autograph out of the recent UD Black release. The card features a hard-signed signature as well as a cool photo of Wallace in his Ole Miss uniform and has been fetching a pretty penny on eBay since its release. The card is pretty low numbered, and rarity almost always drives price more than one would expect. He also has some other amazing cards on the UD Black checklist, and I would not hesitate to check out some of the dual, triple and quadruple autos that feature him and some of the other wide receivers of the 2009 class.

When it comes to 2009, this is the year of the wide receiver, and if everything continues to shape up as it has, there will be one as the rookie of the year. Wallace definitely has a shot, and as a Pittsburgh Steelers, his fan base is huge. These two factors, along with his talent at the position make him a great investment for anyone looking for a late prospecting target. The Steelers may not make the playoffs when all is said and done, however due to Mike Wallace, they at least still have a shot.

Check in next week for the newest rookie to win “Rookie of the Week” honors, and don’t forget to enter in all your rookie card codes from the Upper Deck products you have collected so far. Not only can you win awesome prizes, but the site has some great features that allow you to track rookies and their cards this season!

There has been a growing trend with the Golden State Warriors.  All good players eventually have issues with Coach Don Nelson along with upper management and want out of town.  Stephen Jackson was not the first and he more than likely won’t be the last.  The Warriors have managed to bungle having one of the best collections of young talent in the entire league in recent years, yet haven’t made the playoffs in the past 2+ seasons, despite being one of the most prolific scoring teams in the league.
While most people tend to make out “Stack Jack” as the villain in the Nelson/Jackson feud, the Warriors GM should maybe consider the possibility that Nelson has lost his once strong grip on the NBA game.  We all know that Jackson is a head case…that’s a given, but there is a pattern of bad behavior going on and it always involves Nelson and a disgruntled player.  There has been a mass exodus of talent from a roster which once included Al Harrington, Baron Davis, Mickael Pietrus, Matt Barnes, Marco Belinelli, and now Jackson.  All of whom left in different ways but now play prominent roles for their respective clubs after clashing with Don Nelson over playing time, coaching decisions, etc.  Hasn’t “Nellie” announced that he was halfway into retirement for most of the last 10 years dating back to the Dallas Mavericks?

montaellis

The organization has apparently chosen the coach over the players since the most recent trade rumors coming out of Golden State is that point guard Monta Ellis is also on the fast track out of town at Don Nelson’s urging.  Reports have surfaced recently that Warriors brass aren’t finished cleaning house since they have been frantically trying to trade their current best player to any team that will take him.  Ellis’ agent is scheduled to meet after the holidays with team management to decide his fate.  It doesn’t look good since his agent had already been given permission to seek a trade for his client.  Ellis and Nelson have clashed during the offseason and into the regular season following comments by Ellis that he couldn’t play with rookie Steph Curry and a recent well publicized spat with Nelson at practice.

Just like the Bobcats with Jackson, some NBA team will get a very talented scoring point guard in Ellis, without giving up much in return.  Ellis, who despite injuries, is one of the most talented players at his position.  In the past 2 seasons, he has averaged 19.5 ppg, 4 assists, and 1.5 steals and is off to a similar start this season.  He is a former HS McDonald’s All American, ’06-’07 NBA Most Improved Player, and only at age 24, seems poised to be part of the All-Star discussions as early as this season.

When will this cycle ever end?  I’m sure that the fans in Oakland are going bananas over their team’s personnel decisions in recent seasons.  I know they are also unhappy concerning Nelson’s lack of playing time for future stars in Curry, Anthony Randolph and Anthony Morrow.  Once Ellis is eventually traded, the starting point duties will fall to Curry.  How long will it take before the next player is at odds with Nelson?  I can see all of the future fans who sit courtside, disapprovingly waving their signs reading “Nellie must go!” Tell me I’m wrong.

Well, the dust is finally settling on the biggest trade of the offseason. After days of speculation, “The Doc Deal” was finalized last week. Four teams. Two of baseball’s biggest pitchers. Massive amounts of confusion! Roy Halladay goes to the Phillies, Cliff Lee is shipped to Seattle and the Blue Jays get a smattering of up-and-coming, quality talent. After staring at the details for a while and reading some of the commentary surrounding the deal, I’ve been able to get a pretty good grasp of what went down. But who else has that kind of time? Nobody! That’s why I’m going to break down the trade for you.

What Went Down, Exactly

Three-to-Four-way trades are nothing new in baseball, but that doesn’t mean they’ve become any less complicated. I remember just last year trying to wade through the details of the three-way trade between the Red Sox, Dodgers and Pirates that saw Manny Ramirez go to LA and Jason Bay land in Boston, my head spinning as I tried to parse the many details of the trade. This week’s trade isn’t much different. Here’s what exactly went down:

  • Cliff Lee went from the Phillies to the Mariners
  • Roy Halladay went from the Blue Jays to the Phillies
  • Three prospects, Tyson Fillies, Phillipe Aumont and J.C. Ramirez went from the Mariners to the Phillies
  • Three other prospects, Kyle Drabek, Michael Taylor and Travis D’Arnaud went from the Phillies to the Blue Jays
  • Michael Taylor was dealt to Oakland from Toronto for Brett Wallace

royhalladay

The two big components of the deal were Roy Halladay (moving from the Jays to the Phillies) and Cliff Lee (shipped from Philly to Seattle), two former Cy Young winners still in their prime. Many analysts see Seattle coming out as the winner of the trade, at least in the short term, with the Mariners adding a second talented pitcher to support their ace, “King” Felix Hernandez. The M’s are deadly serious about making it to the post season this year and, along with signing Chone Figgins, this move seems to be yet another step toward that goal.

Halladay essentially replaces Lee in Philadelphia. Though Halladay is generally considered the stronger of the two pitchers, the change in the Phillies’ rotation isn’t as dramatic as that in the Mariners’. The effect on the Phillies this year remains to be seen. One thing’s certain, though: it’s not going to hurt them at all.

The Little Details

So, that’s the main story of what many consider to be one of the biggest trades in the history of baseball. But what about those six prospects? How are the Phillies’ three looking for them? Well, pretty good. Phillipe Aumont is a solid bet, pitching well in the minors last season. He may end up as a good addition to to the Phillies’ bullpen down the road. While J.C. Ramirez doesn’t have quite the impressive numbers or possible potential as someone like Kyle Drabek (more on that in a bit), he still has the chance to become a solid starter for Philadelphia. Besides, the side of the transaction can mostly be viewed as gravy after the Phillies scored Halladay.

There’s still one more question about the trade: did Toronto get shafted in the deal? In the short-term, perhaps. The Jays lost one of the best pitchers in the game and aren’t getting anyone to replace him immediately. Then again, the team was hardly a contender last year, winding down the season with a 75-87 record and 28 games behind the Yankees in the AL East. The AL East is a highly competitive division. With Boston and New York both strengthening already excellent teams, Toronto would likely have to make some quick, massive overhauls to keep up. Halladay alone was not going to make them a contender in 2010.

clifflee

The Mariners are making some of those big overhauls in an effort to find themselves in a race this year, and the Phillies are obviously already chasing their third World Series in so many years. But the Jays seem to be having a classic “team building” year. Sure, that’s often an excuse general managers use when they have a particularly lousy club, but Toronto looks serious about it. Let’s break it down.

First, they acquired Travis D’Arnaud, an up-and-coming catcher. Toronto’s GM Alex Anthopoulos admitted that the Jays had wanted to draft D’Arnaud a few years back, but Philly snatched him up just before they could. It seems that Toronto has had their eye on him forever and finally got of him. The hope is that D’Arnaud comes into his own as a decent power hitter, which seems entirely possible given the numbers he’s put up playing A ball the past two seasons. With Toronto signing John Buck for a season, they’re betting big on D’Arnaud, hoping to groom him and bring him up sooner rather than later.

Next, you have Brett Wallace, acquired from Oakland for Michael Taylor. Again, Wallace is a player the Blue Jays have been after for years, first failing to sign him out of high school and later seeing him selected in front of them in a subsequent draft. Wallace is flexible, able to play first and third (he played both positions last season in AAA for both Oakland and St. Louis). It seems the Jays’ plan on using Wallace at first base, but the flexibility certainly won’t hurt in the future. He also appears to have the makings of a good hitter, hitting .293 and piling up 20 homeruns across the three teams he played for in 2009. Again, a good bet by the Jays.

Last, we have Kyle Drabek. While I’m sure a lot of Blue Jays fans are devastated at the loss of Roy Halladay, they should take comfort in knowing that Drabek has all of the makings of a great pitcher. With a strong fastball and curveball and workable change up, Drabek may end up being the top of the rotation power pitcher Toronto needs to be competitive in the future. He’s young and very driven, both huge pluses, so there’s always a chance that Drabek ends up being the best move (and biggest steal) out of the entire trade. Of course, we probably have another couple of years before that statement can be validated, but I have a feeling he’s going to end up being a fun player to watch, at the very least.

The Blue Jays really are building a smart team. Young, driven and, perhaps best of all for the franchise, relatively cheap. They’re doing a good job of finding young talent and really going after it, in hopes to build a great team for the future. While the Phillies and Mariners both made very strong moves, acquiring two of the biggest pitchers in the game, Toronto may have worked their magic in a very subtle, underrated sort of way. We’ll see if it pans out over the next few seasons. At the very least, this trade has already made this offseason an exciting one.

2009 Rookie of the Year Candidates

Posted by: Adam Gellman | Comments (0)

The NFL season is winding down, and the playoff picture is starting to come into focus. I have followed the rookies for the whole year on both my site and this one, keeping a close eye on those who stand out as top of the class. With the offensive and defensive Rookie of the Year award, there are a few contenders that are at the forefront of the discussion. Many of these rookies have won at least one of the Upper Deck Rookie of the Week awards, and there are still three weeks left for the others to jump on board.

First, I want to discuss my thoughts on the offensive side of the ball, as these are the players that usually receive the most attention. Each of these candidates has meant a great deal to their team (some of which have even won games single handedly). They’ve also had some of the better rookie seasons in recent memory, and the exclamation point will be on the way for two of them come February.

Percy Harvin

If there is one player that has redefined the word “electrifying” this year, Percy Harvin is him. In addition to catching six TD passes from Brett Favre, he also has run back two kicks for touchdowns as well. He leads all rookies in plays over twenty yards from scrimmage, and has been Favre’s favorite third down target for the whole year. He has also functioned as a running back in some cases, carrying the ball out of the Wildcat and motion formations (some of which went for good yardage). He is pretty much the complete package, but the problem of migraines late in the season may hamper his run for this award. He has already missed one game, and is on track to miss at least one more. Regardless, his odds are still pretty good to come home with the trophy.

roy1

Knowshon Moreno

Denver has always been famous for churning out great running backs, and Moreno is no exception. He leads rookie running backs in yards, attempts, yards per carry, touchdowns, and has put together a very nice rookie campaign. Denver started off as one of the three undefeated teams into the middle of the season, and Moreno was a factor in those wins. His five touchdowns are tops on the team, and he is primed for a 1,000 yard season with 837 yards and three weeks to go. Moreno also looks like he will be a force in the years to come, as the Broncos running game has drastically improved with his arrival. His drawbacks are few, but the ones that stick out in my mind are a few key fumbles in key situations. However, this shouldn’t hurt him too much: if Harvin falters and misses the last few games, Moreno is probably the favorite.

roy2

Matt Stafford

Before last year, rookie quarterbacks were never expected to put up good seasons due to the time needed to develop into an efficient playmaker. Stafford was drafted by the Lions to take over the reins as soon as possible and has done that effectively. He brought the first two wins in the last two years to the team, one coming on the last play of the game with a hurt shoulder. He also set the rookie record for touchdowns and passing yardage in a single game, making a good case for his winning the award. But the problem with Stafford all season has been injuries, as he missed a number of games with knee and shoulder problems. Stafford has done his best to make us forget those weeks, but at this point he will need some big numbers to convince us that he deserves consideration.

stafford
Mark Sanchez

This season has been about as big of a roller coaster as it could be for Sanchez, starting very high and going through some twists and turns. Right now, the roller coaster is probably at its lowest, with Sanchez having missed the last game, but the team record could do a lot more for him when compared to Stafford. Sanchez has also thrown a lot of interceptions, but those came on the back of some great performances early in the season. I’m not sure how much of a chance he has right now, but he still has some time to make his case.

09-UD-SDS-Sanchez

Beanie Wells

Although he started off slow, Wells has slowly become the running man in Arizona, putting up touchdowns in the last few games. He has also performed above expectations with yards per carry average, and has done a very good job in getting the struggling Cardinals running game on track. It used to be that the Cardinals would come in and hit you with the gruesome wide receiver twosome, but now there is an added element with Wells carrying the ball. I like Wells’ potential in years to come . . . but as for Rookie of the Year, he is a longshot.

Hakeem Nicks

I think Hakeem Nicks has quietly put together an awesome rookie season. He leads the rookies in receiving yards and is tied for the lead in touchdown receptions, but hasn’t received the same kind of attention as someone like Harvin. He definitely has a shot if the Giants can put together a nice run to get into the playoffs, but it will take some major convincing to dethrone the people ahead of him.

When it comes to defensive Rookie of the Year, there are really only two names in the discussion, mainly because of how well they have performed in their team’s overall defensive arrangement.

Brian Cushing

Cushing is the only rookie to have put up 100 tackles, and has also had 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and a few interceptions. He has truly been a one man wrecking crew, and his credentials are top notch for Defensive ROY. I would say that Cushing is basically the end all and be all of this award, but the overall Texans defense has been less than stellar.

roy33
Clay Matthews

Matthews has been a freaking beast for the Packers in their 3-4 defense. He has 8.0 sacks and has put together an awesome season. He may only have 40 tackles, but he did rip away a touchdown from Adrian Peterson when the Packers played the Vikings early in the season. Its going to be him or Cushing, and that is a no doubter.

With that, my picks so far are going to be Percy Harvin and Brian Cushing, but there is still a chunk of season left to play. Many of the rookies are going to be playing on teams that are fighting for their lives, and that may lead to some changes in the rankings. Who knows: once the season comes to an end, we may have someone new altogether.

Also, be sure to continue to enter the codes from all of your favorite Upper Deck cards, as you still have the chance to win great prizes if your code matches the Rookie of the Week. Of course, it couldn’t hurt to bank on these guys, as they are mostly all past winners. You can also win an autographed football of all the rookies who attended the 2009 Rookie Premiere, giving you another reason to diligently follow the Own The Rookies site.
